R0 is the expected number of cases that can result from a single case when everyone is vulnerable. This means that every sick person gets six other people sick according to this analysis.

5.7 is a crazy high R0.

EDIT: Note that the wikipedia article gives the R0 of COVID-19 as lower than 5.7.

Note this is extremely situationally dependent, and what the paper describes is most relevant for describing the early outbreak in China and not necessarily the behavior in other areas. For example, the authors state: "Among many factors, the lack of awareness of this new pathogen and the Lunar New Year travel and gathering in early and mid-January 2020 might or might not play a role in the high R0." If you looked at the number based solely on that woman in South Korea that infected multiple churches, the R0 would be 1,000.

Yeah that's definitely worth keeping in mind before you get too worried.

As is common, it's a weird almagamum of things that are half true that either he does not understand or is deliberately misleading about.

Evidence suggests that the greatest proximate source of infection in NYC was from travelers coming from Europe. Sure, those travelers probably got it through some series of events leading back to Wuhan, but the point of these traces is to figure out how to manage pandemics not to have someone just angrily point out the address of "patient 0" or whatever. If my city has a pox outbreak, it's not very useful to point out that the version of pox originally came from some other continent long ago.

IIRC the China threatened to or had some NYT reporters expelled from China after questioning the Chinese government's line about rate of infection, number of deaths, etc. China's official reasoning for threatening the explusion of journalists was that the Trump administration announced it would limit the number of Chinese media personnel allowed inside the USA. China expelled 3 WSJ reporters a few weeks back.

So basically the president is screaming at the NYT for pointing out that COVID-19 came to NYC from Europe and arguing that the NYT should be pinning blame on China instead, while mocking the NYT for supposedly being pro-PRC despite the PRC being unfair to open media.

So it's basically a dumb rant born of half-way real events.

Of course the best thing to do is not get caught in the first place.

What I don't get about the "re-open the economy!" chuds is how they expect to force people to patronize businesses that are just going to make them sick. It's not my loving duty to catch the 'rona at a movie theater.

Did or did not we just have Florida spring break a few weeks ago? There are plenty of people who will run right out to stores, arenas, and theaters as soon as they’re open regardless of how terrible an idea it is.

I don't think it's plenty enough to keep those businesses running like they used to for more than a few weeks, and certainly not once those people start getting sick and are forced to stay home anyway. I can think of a number of people who would take the chance but I suspect a lot more would not.

There will be reports of how awesome the earnings were for the first week and that will be used to pressure everyone else into opening everything everywhere. Then we all get sick and die and it’s twice as bad as it is now.
