It's kind of hard to share stories since the mystery packets we cant talk about are a big part of the game(s)
All the mystery packets are fun to open.

But not all of them are fun to open by the person who's opening them.

On the one hand I like to play board games that reward aggression like this. On the other hand it's, uh, hard to get people to agree to that compared to more passive stuff like MtG.

Things were going well, if the bureaucrats were to be believed. But Empress-General Pernille Blix was never on their side. Mere paper-pushing was always a means to an end: conflict. It all served but one purpose, to keep her master's Wheel turning. The belligerent Saharans lay mere hundreds of kilometers off the south horizon, and intelligence reports suggested a flank from the Enclave of the Bears. Regardless of the outcome, victory was assured.

It is begun. Fate is inexorable, but few can contain its forbidden truths. Tell me, my servant, what do you see?

Her master was, if nothing else, instructive. So what did she see? Blood-crazed robots an ocean away, pushing bears onto pack ice. A megalomaniac converting a whole desert and steppe to his petty and transient aims before others finally took notice and trampled so much glass back into sand. A story to spin to the inheritors of Nānnuflāy.

The empress-general pulled out her phone and dialed a trustworthy subordinate. "General Gunderson? It is time for Operation Cyanide."

Real talk here, DM and KI are in the best positions for the next turn unless something massively silly happens with dice. At the start of the turn IB's in a good position but is right next to SR. Similarly, SR has its continent bonus but is right next to IB. So we're going to be at odds for a bit resolving that tangle. Meanwhile EB really needs to grab any kind of continent bonus to be something more than a kingmaker, especially against a very defensive KI that already gets more reinforcements. (They could go after IB but like I said that's just kingmaker territory.) And KI has no nearby opponents to prevent it from gobbling a lot of Asia; at most there's EB but them engaging is again secondary.

Nice to see a two turn victory!

With the turn order randomness and the fact that the reinforcements show up earlier for those who act earlier, the game seems very swing-y. That in turn, should encourage fast gameplay.
So far as Dr. Snark was running things, reinforcements were actually simultaneous and processed before turn 2 itself. It's technically a houserule but very much a necessary one. If not for it turn orders would need way too many contingencies based on what territories a player hasn't lost and or what population/continent bonuses they temporarily have.

Also, drat did DM get results with that lucky lunge. Congratulations to MagusOfStars!

Without simultaneous reinforcements, Balkania has a decent shot at the win. Drop all 10 troops into western or central Europe, invade West Africa, then take a shot at both HQs.

Risky, especially because DM has a fortified HQ, but ultimately it'd have been 11 troops to conquer 3 territories and 8 troops. I don't know the loss ratio against fortified HQs but it had to have at least a 33% chance.

E: by the way, is Empress-general Blix a reference to something?
A fortified HQ is a huge bonus defensively. Someone did the odds for 3v2 matchups (ie, doomstack vs. doomstack) and found that it changed things from slightly favoring the attacker to giving the defender a 2:1 kill ratio. Which is about what I figured would be necessary in the first place. Minor spoilers there maybe? Basically, if you want to assault DM make absolutely sure you've got excess troops and/or an attack bonus to counter them.

As for Empress-General Blix? The character concept is based on the relationship of Moebius and the Elder God from the Legacy of Kain games. The first game ended quicker than the expected character arc, but eh I can always bluster about in the background. The character design is just me throwing together screenshots from (lightly modded) Code Vein, aka Anime Vampire Dark Souls. The dress-up simulator doesn't do age or pants for ladies well but otherwise it's pretty robust.

The last several years had been peculiar for Pernille Blix. For one, she was no longer Empress-General. The blood magocracy of Die Mechaniker had seen to that in their victory. To their credit, the officer corps was not about to go down without a fight. But the numbers simply didn't match up; too many robots, and too few weapons in the hands of loyal Balkanians.

"Balkanian Emperor" Namtab was an unexpected variable. None of them remembered a horror kept alive by impossibly advanced technology, not even the Old God, but the ensuing bureaucratic chaos was just what Balkanian partisans needed to kickstart their gun-smuggling operations. Months later, they were ready for a breakout. Most of the officer corps survived - most. The former Empress-General, however, went down in a hail of gunfire. A heroic sacrifice to buy precious minutes for others - Balkania could live on as a nation without her, after all.

Blix wasn't lying per se, just...not telling the whole truth. Like the extent of what serving the Old God really meant. Oh, she really was invested in the success of Imperial Balkania; just because she served an eldritch horror didn't mean she couldn't have basic empathy. But following either that goal or the aims of the Old God meant taking a different road. An eternity passed, and her torment receded. No longer was she numbered among the dead, for her master's wheel ever spun. The former dictator awoke to find herself washed up on the unfamiliar shores of some city called Medvedgrad. New from the looks of the paint and concrete.

"Pernille Blix, ever my faithful servant, you are worthy."

She was alive and whole, at least. In enemy territory. It was time to be running and scheming.

The bears were perplexed until Blix compared them to overgrown raccoons; then they became frenzied. Some insane cult would stop at nothing for her blood, something about summoning a demon of song. (The kind with good looks, not the kind that resembled a giant frog.) And one aged Saharan DJ actually recognized her and traded for supplies during a makeshift blues concert. They said something about having more important things to worry about than a washed-up autocrat; Blix suspected that "more important things" meant "not wasting resources on an illusive nobody" but was not about to press the issue. At least she now had alcohol.

Guerrilla journalism in Semarang and other Indonesian cities suggested that there were not one, but rather two, Hatsune Miku's. Which begs the question...which is 01?
