I STILL can't believe that only two people died from rescuing those Thai kids from the cave, and that only one of those was during a dive.

It looks like some of the seasons are available to watch for free on History's website https://play.history.com/shows/alone/unlocked

Arsenic Lupin posted:This is an interesting point. I'm guessing they must inspect clothes before you go in? Because otherwise I'm totally stashing extra wire/cord/whatever. For whatever reason this made me think of Grand Duchess Anastasia and her sisters having inadvertently made bulletproof vests by sewing so many diamonds into their corsets that bullets ricocheted off of them. I would knit myself a top down sweater that I could unravel from the waist up to get some sweet sweet extra cordage, and also a stylish crop top in the process.

I'm on the last episode of season 1 Alone and I wish they would give more information about how First Nations people lived on Vancouver Island before European contact to contrast with the modern survivalists.

I'm watching Alone season 2 and while I really like a few of the people (esp Nicole! She is so sweet), I can't stand Larry the abusive angry. He makes me so uncomfortable and they feature him so much! I honestly might not watch the rest, he scares me so much. Plus he swears so much that it's more bleep than speech and it's really annoying.

busalover posted:This one bit I liked: There are a few hermit positions still available. The podcast Futility Closet did an episode about hired hermits back in 2015 and people still send them job listings for modern hermits. https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/hermit-wanted-for-historic-gardens-923361 https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/austrian-town-seeks-professional-hermit-180961819/ https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/apr/19/hes-hired-belgian-lands-dream-job-as-hermit-for-austrian-cliffside-retreat https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/budelli-hermit-eviction-morandi/index.html

Comrade Koba posted:Everest (the 2015 one) is worth a look, it's basically Into Thin Air: The Movie. I found this movie very confusing because everyone looked alike in their snowsuits and goggles. A real failure by the costume department. The BEST climbing movie/doc is Touching the Void, but that's not about Everest.

Achmed Jones posted:i read the last 100 or so posts and this is sounding like a snuff film watch party. i get why people can't look away but, like, this is bad and i think the best thing to do here is to stop watching. maybe check on him once a day or something (but better to just keep an eye on the news), but this has gone from "lol this dumbass" to something very dark. i don't really think anyone should be in the orbit of this kinda thing. Me posting as a mod (I am keeping an eye on this thread because I have been following it for ages): This dude is going to do what he does. There's nothing we can do to stop it. It is okay to watch and comment on his hubris and stupidity. It is not okay to get bloodthirsty and ghoulish about it. I have discussed this with Seth and whoever else happened to be on mod Discord at the time and we think the current vibe is fine. However, if you feel there are any particular posts that cross the line, please report them, or message me or Seth.

DurianGray posted:Antarctica still has its own extreme-sports-related horrors, like polar thigh (probably don't look at the pictures if you're eating or plan to eat in the near future). Interesting that this was not suffered by the polar explorers of old, since they were surely wearing wool long underwear. Since it seems to be correlated with thicker thighs and those guys seemed to suffer a lot of privation back in the day, I'm guessing they had skinnier legs.
