Got some fun bass line action.

Different Park Soyeon. She was in Produce 101 and was in LOEN's basement for a few years, left in 2018, then debuted solo last year. The trainees that stayed in the basement went through heavy lineup changes and company mergers and eventually became Weeekly.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05luBiXMNuE

T-ara's Soyeon doesn't need a last name to promote, but unfortunately does the exact kind of music you'd think a 30-something ex-"main vocal" would do:

It's basically because it's now 1 pick voting and the voting result is 50% from Korean votes and 50% from international votes, and the few Korean fans actually watching the show have mostly been voting for Korean trainees. The internationals did well in previous rounds because the Korean fans still had to vote for a Chinese and Japanese trainee but now they don't. International fans were voting for K trainees as well because they assumed someone like Xiao Ting was safe so she ended up going from 1 and 2 the whole time to 16th. Su Ruiqi is there because she never had much Korean support anyway and it sounds like she's the Chinese fan favourite.

Of course, all this assumes that what Mnet posted is legitimate and not made up just to create more interest in the live broadcast.

I think they'd actually get a "global" group if they let people pick 3 or more of their favorites regardless of nationality rather than one-pick. There was a mission where everyone just voted for 9 trainees, and while we don't know if Mnet made changes to the resulting teams, it looked like it was decided by overall votes and made a 4K/3J/2C lineup for the top third team. It'll be interesting to see how or if they change the weighting or process on the final live vote, and that's assuming they even want to steer the votes to a more "balanced" lineup.

Jihyo was giving 110% the whole concert and brought the other members up with her. The only reason they stopped might have been covid protocol. Venues could only stay open until 9 and they went until 8:45.

I also thought that despite being totally live, the production and camerawork was way, way, better than the online only show last year. And I hope companies continue online broadcasts. 3 years ago you would have never gotten to see a show like that, even as a "world tour", since most overseas setlists and ments stick to the script.

This was my first Beyond Live. Maybe won't be the last? I would watch all of them for Twice for sure, and for other artists I like that hopefully do the same thing (G-Idle pls), because yeah 100%, the production was really good!

This was the first one that was just taking a normal concert and broadcasting it, and honestly the format is a lot better for it. I think the VOD of last year's is still available for purchase on VLive, but I thought the AR stages were janky compared to what MNet pulls off for the online KCons, and having half the stuff pre-recorded made it feel lifeless compared to a lot of other online concerts.

I-dle's online concert was one of the earliest in the pandemic, since they were about to tour before it got cancelled, but also one of the best. It's the only one I can think of that had individual member cams running almost the whole show length.

teagone posted:

Still guessing k-pop live shows are different to western productions, but I really enjoyed the format. All the ments and those pre-recorded videos inbetween setlist chunks were cute.
You get all those things normally, but especially with the Seoul concerts, there's more leeway to go off topic during the ments, prepare special stages, or perform 8 encores out of nowhere. So it's nice that online gives us a window into that experience that you'd only otherwise know about from people translating fan accounts on twitter. Plus online lets all the groups that can't pour money into a world tour do something domestic but still reach international fans.

teagone posted:

I was also sorta taken aback by how "reserved" the crowd was, though I'm sure COVID protocols/social distancing affecting the venue layout was a limiter for how crazy they could've been—or maybe it's a cultural thing? I wanna be dancing and jumping all around while watching Twice live lol.

The audience was banned from cheering/shouting/talking due to covid. It sounds like you got into kpop in the last 2 years. Look up older concert footage or even music show clips from 2019 or earlier for the real experience. Being at a kpop concert is like listening to dinosaurs murdering cats for 2 hours, and in Korea all the dinosaurs and dying cats know the fanchants too.

Everglow hasn't had a win on M Countdown, which was probably a requirement for everyone. Even if Viviz hadn't won, they probably would have grandfathered them in as Gfriend, and Kepler was guaranteed music show wins with their album sales.

That said, I feel like there'd be a better show if Dreamcatcher and Stayc were in. You'd get some killer remixes out of Leez & Ollounder and Black Eyed Pilseung. Maybe a miracle will happen and Hwang Hyun will work on Loona's songs again.

edit re lee seung-gi apparently he was doing well enough outside of music that the label ended up paying him $4m and he said he's donating it all. but yeah the way the system works is also why idols largely come from money now, see also today's nepo baby discourse

His agency supposedly paid him according to his contract for his acting, hosting, and commercials, but then strung him along for literally a decade and a half telling him his music was negative profit, and that they were doing him a solid by not counting it against his income, all while pocketing the 4 million that was actually his share. And now he has no reason to believe that they ever paid him correctly. So even if you're one of the highest paid and most beloved celebrities in Korea, with decades of earning potential still ahead of you, the industry still fucks you over.

i think it is just OK when the idol is 30 because the lame fans who would be weird about it have probably moved on to some younger group.

The spouses of first-gen group members still get death threats on the reg. Those fans have been actual batshit crazy for 25+ years now.

Redezga posted:

I know there's been a few back and forths with the "is it okay for idols to date?" thing over the years because some companies welcomed it and others were very much the opposite, but the reveal that Rado from Black Eyed Pilseung and Bomi from Apink have been dating for 7 years almost feels like that era of being group/career damaging is over.

I think it helps that the BEP-produced comebacks revitalized Apink's image, brought in new fans, and kept the group going for another 5 years after all their contemporaries disbanded or fell apart. You can't argue that dating interfered with anyone's work with those results.

Stan twitter is probably re-contextualizing all of Bomi's interactions with STAYC, which should be pretty fun.
