I mean, it's not a wildly unrealistic scenario. Trump has fanatic followers, Biden doesn't, so it's possible more people will be watching the RNC than the DNC. It's going to be full of lovely statements that the fanatical Trump following will love, cause those are the only people he speaks to anymore. Democrats will hate it. It's totally possible that Trump can win enough swing states to be re-elected.

However, I really don't think there will be much of a bump for Trump, probably not any more than there was for Biden. You also won't get people tuning in to see what Trump has to say, because we all know it's just the same poo poo he always says. We already know the convention's gonna be 4 days of insinuating that Biden is a far left radical who's going to destroy the police and let immigrants kill your wife and black people take your house. If they weren't moved by that message before, there's not much reason to believe they'll be moved now.

I think doing speeches to a small audience was a worse idea than doing speeches to no audience. When you make a speech expecting applause and no one gives it, or when you get it and it's small... it feels worse than a speech that's designed without breaks and delivered without any participation expected. There's an indicator of low enthusiasm when that happens.
It doesn't help that they left everything hard, so it sounds empty in there.
The RNC is just as awkward and weird, but it's also hateful and masturbatory. A strange year for conventions.

Well, I think the republican convention's tactic of being batshit insane will probably lead to more people paying attention to it. I'm definitely seeing more people talking about it on Reddit, for example. While I think most of it is negative attention, it's still what happened in 2016. I think the difference is that more people dislike Trump and that this time it's not anger at anything, they're in power and it just feels crazy. It was full of contradictions, too; Hayley talking about removing the confederate flag after a mass shooting while Trump is out there getting mad at NASCAR for removing it and talking about respecting heritage. Their message was the same poo poo that so far, seems to not be working: Joe Biden is a radical leftist who's going to destroy everything you know and love, and Trump is the only defender left of western civilization. While I think more people are paying attention, I don't think it'll help Trump much at all.

But who knows. This country's full of rubes.

This surprised me. There was way more activity here and on reddit around this convention. I guess it was that left wing spaces have things to be mad about rather than just going "well... it's the democrats"

My mom saw a bit of it last night and thought it was nuts. I think people here forget that our issues with the DNC isn’t most peoples. A lot of people like the overly cheesy empathetic stuff and they we’re looking for something well presidential sounding from Biden and he delivered plus he isn’t the incumbent, everyone knows what trump sounds/acts like now and that’s what’s turned a lot of the moderates away and towards Biden.

I'm pretty sure most people's minds are made up now, but I spent a lot of time during the big speeches thinking "normal people will probably love this." Michelle saying that her children were wondering if they were being lied to about what America is was about was something I specifically remember feeling would really hit with your average squishy american. The RNC, as much of it as I watched, seemed scary and insane most of the time except for the two people whose speeches pretended the others didn't exist, while the DNC was boring until it hit notes like that.

I was just surprised to see higher ratings, cause I saw waaay more engagement around it online. I do think that was because people were going "are you seeing this loving poo poo" instead of mostly just not really caring.

I don't know what good that does other than show they still have connections to get that stuff.

Which I guess is the point, to make the campaign and Trump in particular paranoid.

Well, no one's there. They're either being given to an empty room or a sparse crowd, due to, you know, the plague that Trump said he beat.

Anyone find it odd they're trying to make the Trump family into paragons of virtue? We all know who Trump is, and people voted for him despite/because of that. This time they're trying to sell the Trump family as the blessed royals or something, they're all speaking and they're all talking about how good Trump is and how good they are. It's weird, it's like they're trying to sell something people haven't seen already.

It's not gonna be good

I mean, the best he does is teleprompter Trump. It's probably gonna be deranged rambling about Biden, deranged rambling about Law and Order, and deranged rambling about imaginary accomplishments. Only his cultists and the soul-scarred political observers will watch it.

I think it sets the right tone, if it's a little over the top with the "joe's a quick movin' guy," I don't think that's a believable line. If it's trying to indicate an ambitious presidency, I like that.

Open calls for unity and good feeling words, combined with a willingness to be open about greif are good tactics against Trump. He's clearly played his hand as a divisive and partisan actor, and I feel like your average american is P sick of that. The chuds aren't, they want to rip this country apart, but I think average people are.

I donno. I donno anything.
