Incidentally it's worth looking out for Avenue 5. It's Armando Iannucci doing sci-fi, so you've probably already got the shape of it. Some of it is *way* too on-the-nose but I think that's just his normal reality distortion field making Americans even more ridiculous.

I have a bone to pick with this thread (and other people online) over Avenue 5.

So I heard from a bunch of places, and read here, how Avenue 5 was really good guys, and that there was a TWIST!

So the wife and I sit down to watch the show, and I think it’s okay. Some good funny bits.
But all the time I’m watching it, I’m waiting for this twist. This thing that will make she show super good.

And I start to see if I can figure out what it’s supposed to be. I see that there is this escalating sense of disaster and bad choices being made and how self-destructive all the casts are.
And I think that all the main characters are maybe patients with a variety of mental health problems and that Avenue 5 is some role playing scenario that started as a way of getting them to solve problems, only now they are all addicted to it and the doctors running the hospital are having to devote more time and resources to keeping the show going.

And then I start thinking there is this Brexit vibe to it, and maybe they are going to say that this show is explicitly about Brexit and how it broke the minds of all involved.

Either way, I’m really looking forward to the twist getting revealed.

And we finish the first season and....nothing.
I literally finished the last episode and said “where was the twist?”

I had to go online and find out that the “twist” was in the first episode about how the crew were all incompetent.
And I was so annoyed at this because that was bloody obvious two minutes into the show.
I spent all this time thinking about what it could be, and it was just what it appeared on the surface. The last time I did something like that was with Korra: The Legend of the Avatar.

Tldr: I spent ages looking for a twist that was never there, and I blame UKMT for it.

...is this some meta-commentary on sarcasm or humour, or did you actually watch a different show?

The twist is literally the entire main storyline where you discover that all of the crew aren't just incompetent, they're literally just actors playing parts to reassure the passengers, and the whole ship is actually automated and a bunch of less-photogenic people behind the scenes are just tending to the machines. It's a wee bit heavy handed as a metaphor for modern society and politics but we're apparently long, long beyond the point where subtlety works

No, not at all.
I had heard from a few different sources “the show has a great twist.”
I said “cool, I’ll watch the show.”
I spent all my time watching the show waiting for this twist, and even trying to see if I could preemptively guess the twist early.

I could not, because the “twist” had happened in episode one, and it was something so obvious that I assumed that there was another, better twist waiting in the wings.

There was not.

Inbetweeners is an interesting show.

Watching it when it aired, it was funny because so much of the humour and behaviour came from things I remembered witnessing or doing.

Looking back the main cast are mostly good but flawed people.

Simon is a good guy, whose flaw is his poor decision making.
Jay is on the surface an oversexed pest/fantasist who is a danger to be around, but this is to hide the fact he is a sweet teenager who is looking for love but can’t be honest due to the toxic masculinity he is surrounded with at home.
And Neil, while dim, is an honest and supportive kid.

Their mistake is that they are friends with Will. Someone they assume is smarter and wiser than they are, but is just posher.

The idea of a bunch of people being constantly punished for choosing a posho to lead them is something that I think resonates for a lot of the UK now.

That's a factor of population size and density, and rollout of other fuel sources for heating and cooking. Ireland never really had a gas infrastructure outside Dublin so gas cooking and heating is much less common there than it is here, so even if all other factors are equal they're going to use more electricity. Also densely-packed cities generally consume less electricity than towns and villages, and most cities in Ireland have had a massive boom of shittily-built modern housing in the last few years.

Ireland could be a massive exporter of electricity - they've got way more wind and tidal power potential than GB - but for some reason they've never really fully tapped that potential. NI has almost as much wind power as the Republic despite the massive disparity in size.

1) Yes the lack of wind/tidal power is tied into NIMBY (or coast in this case.)
I really wish they would do more to develop green power like this.

2) The lack of gas cookers is a major thing in my house. We couldn't get a gas cooker and went with an electric one.
Since the wife and I are considering building our own place she again has gone back to beating the drum for getting a gas cooker "as they are better for cooking things."
I disagree and want an induction hob for the inside.
I would compromise by agreeing to install a Gas BBQ in the back garden with a roof overhead and use that for most of the big cooking.
I think the big thing that will swing it will be if the various architects/builders say (as I suspect they will) that you just can't get gas installed in new builds.

The Question IRL

I've done the research about Electric v Gas v Induction.
The problem is the wife has these romantic notions of using gas cookers in her mums home and how much better it is than our electric hob.
(And she is right. The gas cooker is better than what we have now. But I don't think it is as good as a new Induction hob.)
And no amount of articles or videos will change her mind. The only thing likely to change her mind will be real world evidence.

This came up over Christmas where I bought rear Wireless LG speakers to add onto my Soundbar to turn it into a 5.1.2 sound system.

Before I got it, she complained that it was a waste of money and would do nothing.

Five minutes into watching Midnight Sky on Netflix with the new sound system she admits that she was wrong.

Well the Game Boy was notorious for causing eye strain due to the lack of backlighting. And while the Game Boy Colour didn't have backlighting either (that wouldn't come along until the Gameboy Advance) it was easier to make things out on screen due to the appearance of colour.

Yeah and I think this was actually the source of the fraud. Once you total up the devices when purchased (I think they were second hand but I imagine we pretended they were new), the games, accessories etc. it comes to more than you think, and the insurance company (if I recall correctly) were just like "make a list up to that value".

Valuation when it comes to the law, is a funny thing.

One of my first cases, I was representing a man charged with a burglary where over €30,000 worth of goods were stolen. The dispute arose (when it came to decide whether or not to keep it in the lowest of court, or punt it upwards to a higher court) around the valuation. Basically the jewellery was probably bought for 1/10th that price. But the owners said that the sentimental value was much higher and that’s where the value of €30,000 came from.

Our argument was
1) The goods were all recovered, so the sentimental valuation is immaterial as you got the stuff back.
2) You are clearly inflating the valuation to suit yourself, and possibly as part of an insurance scam.

On the flip side in another case one of my clients stole a woman’s bag that contained a (relatively) inexpensive amulet. But the amulet contained some of the ashes of the woman’s dead mother, so from a sentimental value the item was priceless.

Where you really see a clash between “Cost Price” versus “Real Price” is mobile phones.
If someone is charged with nicking someone’s iPhone or Galaxy, the price is put at between €800-€1,200.
And that is what those phones cost brand new. But almost no-one buys their phone brand new*, they get them as part of a bill-pay service where the cost is deferred and factored into mobile phone service.
Also if the phone is over a year old, or smashed then it’s value is certainly less. And if you received the listed cash value for said phone (Say an iPhone 8), you’d likely use it to just buy a newer phone. (An iPhone 10. Or X. Or whatever their dumb naming convention goes.)

Basically gadget insurance has some formula for working out how to replace your smashed phone. Where as for the criminal justice system, it’s mostly used as a shorthand for “this person got his phone stolen. It was not a lemon. It’s inconvenient to lose a mobile phone. If the accused is going to put together a sum of money as a way of saying sorry, it should be around but not exactly this much. Please punish accordingly after taking into account the persons background and circumstances and if they brought a bunch of cash to court.”

* = I mean I have. But I except what I do isn’t common. And when I have bought a phone wholesale I usually do it through Amazon.Italy and ended up paying way less than what the High Street would charge for said phone.

What a grim situation. Either emergency services failed during what must of been a horrific time in the individuals trying to help, or a set of dirt bag lawyers is trying to exploit a grieving family to extract a pay out of some kind. Either way, horrendous.

kingturnip posted:

Weeeeell, you don't appoint your own lawyers to investigate something like this if you're certain that the original findings were fair. But, I can imagine a lawyer laying it on pretty thick with the whole "It'll just give you peace of mind" shtick.

So as a father who is going through an investigation into my daughter's death and also a lawyer*, you don't go into these cases lightly. And likewise lawyers don't approach grieving families, rub their hands together and say "fantastic, this will be a juicy pay day! Now to concoct some evidence to indicate systematic wrong doings."

You go into these things because you are looking for answers and hopefully peace of mind. One thing that is often the case when you tell your story over and over again, parts that you have normalized and internalized are actually horrific and they only become obviously horrific when you tell a third party about them**. And when you tell someone about your story and they tell you "what happened to you doesn't sound like it was normal" you have a desire to investigate.

And very often, when you start an investigation, the official version of events can fall apart when the strings are tugged on this.

For example, based on the BBC clip posted there, the poor unfortunate parents of Saffie thought she died instantly in the bombing. Now, this begs the question, why did they think that?
Were they told she had died instantly? And if so, by whom? And why?
But if they examination into her death reveals that she was alive when she reached the hospital, suddenly you have a bunch of extra questions. And if you had been previously told by the authorities one thing (she died instantly) but the evidence reveals something different (she did not) your trust in everything that the authorities have said is gone.

Contrary to what Torries think, parents don't sit around fantasizing that their children die in some manner so they can sue the State and get a paycheck to buy new flat screen TV's and Smartphones. Any parent will tell you that they would trade all the money in the world to just have their child alive again.
But very often the reason these cases end up being so protracted and fought is because the parents were told that nothing could be done, discovered that something could have been done and that no apology is forthcoming. And it's the lack of empathy and the misinformation that drives these things.

I had been told that the UK had moved towards a system where apologies were made and wrongdoings admitted (as a means to reduce liability cases. Which studies have shown that it often does.) but I don't know what has happened here.

*= Albeit one who specializes in criminal law. I have never run a medical negligence case and my starting point for doing one would be "find a good medical negligence lawyer and hire them to do the case."

**= And it's something that is common with most kinds of tragedy. It's sort of a coping mechanism mixed with a desire not to single yourself out. I call it the Misery Olympics. "Yes my legs did get chopped off because of a falling door. Still, some people have it worse. So I can't complain."

We already figured out the solution for that years ago, just send this guy in

I think he had a friend with a red outfit too?

In one of those weird coincidences* I was watching a Let's Play of the arcade version of NARC this morning, because YouTuber Justin Whang had put up a Stream of himself playing the game on the NES.
That game, NARC, not only has one of the maddest final bosses ever, but when you beat the game it says "thank you for completing the NARC training program. Now go enroll with your local DEA office."

The game was literally a recruiting tool for the drugs task force.

Also, fun fact, fellow Goons Slowbeef and Diabetus did a Let's Play of a very obvious NARC rip-off called Crimewave.
It was pretty funny.

It's the excuse made in Secondary school by the class dickhead blaming the class swot.

"Sir, this bad Brexit deal isn't my fault. I voted for it without reading it. But the Labour guy was supposed to read it before he voted for it."

Good question: Not sure actually. Someone else pointed that out, too

Given that it is from the Irish Embassy Twitter account and is using the Irish flag Emoji, it's probably less likely to cause offense if you just phrase it as "here are sea routes that sail from the Republic of Ireland to France" and imply that people in the North can also sail to France through some magical means.

Its because they should be very intelligent, calm, rational people and yet hes been on a 4 day breakdown over it.

Twitter has done more to bring the entire barrister profession into disrepute than anything else.

So the Bar as a profession is one so tied up in Victorian traditions* not to mention crazy financial structures meaning it's expensive enough to get in. But it can be super expensive to stay in practice, because payment can be super spadoric.

The nature of the work involves standing up in court in front of an audience and theatrically** argue well researched points of law. As has been said, ithe court is a Crucible, where the mediocre are very quickly burnt up.

As a profession it attracts a certain type of personality. But the fact we have ethics and (more importantly) an actual sense of collegial means that most Barristers know not to act like dicks to each other. Even if for no other reason than you don't want your reputation within the profession shredded.

But as they say in that ad campaign for Tayto Crisps, there is always one.

Sounds like this QC is....one.

*= Seriously I can do a huge effort post about this I know there is a law thread which also probably covers similar ground but I have dined out regularly on stories about Wigs, Gowns, dinner at Hogwarts, having Masters and about spelling Honour with or without a U.

** = I mean that literally. While in Law school we had to take acting lessons. Mostly withal view to improving your speaking voice, but I have learned that sometimes you need to lay the emotions on a bit thick to enhance your case.

Please tell me this consisted of watching and learning at least one Rumpole speech?

No, just general stuff about getting people to come out of their shells and speak loudly, clearly and with authority.

And while Rumpole is an excellent look at life in the Bar, my go to for most accurate media portrayal of life in the Criminal bar is now, and will forever be My Cousin Vinny.

I could do lectures using just that film and different topics of the law.

Also someone on Twitter pointed it out, and I can't help but want Joe Pesci to play Tom Holland's Uncle Ben in the next Spider-Man movie.

Is there any profession other than policing where you can just ignore your work email for two weeks and get away with it? We've been waiting on the copper involved to get back with a date he's available for my dad's inquest for a fortnight now. We, people who are not professionally required to do so, got back within a few days. gently caress I thought those stupid cruel lazy fuckers so much.

If you are having a problem getting in touch with a specific police officer, see if you can find out what Station he is attached to. (If you have an email address for him, it might also say what police station he is assigned to.)
Then try phoning that Station or emailing them, asking to speak to PC Joe Blogs, or to ask him to respond to your message. Explain that it’s to do with an Inquest and that you just need him to confirm dates.
Phone calls are more likely to spur people to action than just relying on emails alone.

I've noticed it too, a strange sort of insistence for optimism no matter what and people who are usually the type to have maybe shook their dad's hand once are suddenly energised with wanting to hug and kiss everyone around them.

I've also noticed, in my more peripheral friends, a sudden focus on absolutely ridiculous goals - from someone selling their house so they can live in a van to another friend wanting to climb Mount Everest before the years out (with no climbing experience whatsoever) - its as if being in lockdown for a little bit has had a massive effect on people so that this year they are driven towards ludicrous plans and life-changing decisions because 'that's what this years all about'

That in itself pisses me off as there's plenty of people who, for a number of reasons, can't leave the house much or have access to different buildings or opportunities to meet with people they know on a normal year. But you stop someone from going to Wetherspoons for a few fridays in a row and they act as if this is the worst thing to ever happen to them

A few years ago, I watched this documentary about Brexit. The focus on the show was getting people Pro-Leave and Pro-Remain, putting them together in a room and trying to work out why they voted the way they did.

The thing that always stuck with me was at the end they had gotten the people into two groups, to try and just talk out their feelings. And the Pro-Remain groups thing was "Can't you see how this is going to screw us all over. What have you done?"
While the Pro-Leave group was "look it's done now. Let's all just work together so we can get the best Brexit possible."

And what I took from it was one group was in shock because they saw what was going to happen in the future and all the ramification of same.
While the other group was just focusing on how happy they were now, and how we all need to ignore thinking too hard about what will happen and instead just mouth empty platitudes and live in denail.
