If you become a patron can you download patreon episodes in a podcast app or do you have to listen through patreon?

I might have to sign up once I hit episode 8.

like (i think) most podcasts with patreons, there's a special rss feed you get when you join that had the bonus content + the ad-free base eps

Cool thanks, I’m gonna have to go for it. Three episodes in and I’m a fan.

I found out I already knew who Beth was because of a completely different popular YouTube channel from 2013

What’s the YouTube channel? She’s great. The only one of them I’ve heard of is Freddy and that’s only because of the Johnny Five Aces art.

Thanks to this thread I’m now on episode 14 and a patron. The only thing that’s been bugging me is the over the top laughter an unnamed couple of them keep doing whenever something is even slightly funny.

Me too, I’m on episode 28. I got two other people into the show and want to talk about new developments but they’re only on 22 :argh:

E- the part in talking dad when they started saying the walter/paeden patreon episode would be about them loving was amazing. Beth completely losing her poo poo is the best

I was listening at work and had to stop midway through, before Ron does his perception check. It was fun trying to decide what I thought was going on. They did a great job but I do think it would have been better if they hadn’t edited out the group perception roll in the beginning.

Omg Beth's voice

I loved the talking dad where she first has the invisilign in, the whole episode was so good because of it. Especially the end when she said that when they start recording together again she’s going to hug everyone and they’re just going to have to work with her on it even though it’ll be awkward :3:

Pennsylvanian posted:

Yeah, that was when I had to pause it at work because I was holding back a burst of laughter.

For me it was a talking dad moment when they were asked about what the dads would do if they found their son’s porn. Ron’s approach of trying to casually make references like “that pta meeting was a real cumshot compliation” or “that teacher sure was a creampie” oh god that poo poo had me laughing hard in a room full of people at work.

Valentin posted:

the ending was deeply anticlimactic and all the character arcs ended with half-hearted shrugs, which suits the fuckaround jokes-heavy podcast I enjoyed listening to.

It did not suit the emotionally heavy, deep and meaningful podcast everyone involved clearly believed they were making, based on the number of fake cries about dad relationships I had to listen to or railroaded childhood trauma flashbacks I had to sit through. the emotional beats of that podcast also often had very little to do with the events I had to actually listen to. It really says everything about their approach to the serious side of the podcast that more than one character says Ron, who literally needs his child to parent him at every available turn, is a great dad.

They made some serious storytelling mistakes as a group around the trial arc, I think, and Anthony has made both big and little storytelling errors since then (killing original blend Nicholas and never bringing him back and never following up on it being probably the biggest in my book), so cumulatively the emotional stuff never once landed for me. Hopefully the shorter-form stuff we're getting next is heavier on the jokes side.

As much as I love this show and recommend it to people I agree with this take on it. The show ended up getting dragged down a little by the heavy handed character arcs and forced tearjerker moments. Some of it was great but they sometimes lost track of what made the show so much fun in the first place. The new Talking Dad episodes are making me think they’re going to keep overthinking it in an overenthusiastic film student sort of way, but they’re still getting my patreon money and I’m excited to hear what comes next.

Fake edit: oh yeah also Will was a lot of fun as a DM and I loved the candle gimmick so much. It was a great idea for the dog theme and Matt’s enthusiasm for sniffing candles made it a true delight.

I started the show as a big Ron fan but looking back on it all, Matt is the dad and dog mvp

I really wish they would chill out a little with the film nerd obsession with forced story arcs and just let it be fun.

I’m not saying throw that completely out the window because they obviously love it so much but they’re overthinking it. Maybe I just need to stop listening to Teen Talk for a while.

Combat is boring to me unless it’s made interesting somehow but that seems to be a challenge. On Nerd Poker I’ll skip an entire episode if I realize it’s all combat and it won’t make a difference.

I’d even be interested in a version of D&D that downplays the combat

I’ve found this season really strange, it’s been really funny and weird, in the way that I thought made the first campaign so fun, things like the black parade reveal have been great.

But it’s also full of their worst writer impulses, where they want to tell a poignant story about trauma and growth, and an improvised podcast seems like the worst possible venue for that story.

It’s like they’re trying to create The Great American Novel in improv D&D form when the fun goofy stuff and silly premise were a huge part of the initial popularity

quote:

The main thing is that I just really need to stop listening to Teen Talk, because it feels like every episode of that show is about how ‘this episode was bad and we dropped the ball on this Emotional Beat’ and it’s a weird energy.

I stopped listening to Teen Talk and while I miss hearing them chitchat, the comically serious post game analysis is terrible so I feel unburdened
