Rudolph is no slouch either if you have him. His traps are awesome utility on tougher maps, but he has an ability called Straight Shot which fucks. He can also put enemies to sleep with high damage arrow shots after promotion. I haven't messed with Archibald much unfortunately because his movement is so low. But since his shots do more damage at range he's kind of amazing if you can get him into position with the Quietus that lets you move anywhere within like 8 squares.
I was on the fence with Rudolph but then I figured out that his traps do %-based damage, as they were absolutely wrecking Avlora and Rufus when most of my attacks were just denting them.

Anna and Hughette are definitely S-tier... I find that Roland is way too fragile for a front-line character, though, even with defense upgrades.

AOE magic is really good, especially if combined with Now! so they can light up the same group of enemies twice in a row.

So far, only one close call (Chapter 9 Desert Ambush) where I used up all of my pellets and ended up with only Anna, Hughette, Benedict and Frederica standing.

Definitely seeing some flaws but every game has those.

even if Anna's damage drops off, she can inflict poison and sleep status, use various items, move around really well with Surmount... I like using Twofold Turn on her so she gets four actions. I have used her and Hughette in every story battle.

Lyla and Ezana are voiced by Cristina V

Serenoa's original 1st demo voice actor was supposedly recast in the full release and ended up being Frani

Hughette's VA was Kai in Valkyria Chronicles 4 and Bernadetta in FE3H... typecast as a sniper, I guess.
I thought I recognized Hossabara's VA from VC4 as well, and she was in it, just not as the character I thought she was.

Mage weapons do not affect spell power, but top tier weapon upgrades give everyone the chance for a new skill.

This is particularly important for the mages because they get ultimate spells from this and these things have versatility.

Spoilers for Ezana's ultimate.

Ezana's ultimate is global lightning, so every single enemy on the map gets nailed by a lightning bolt and those bolts have a paralysis chance. I'm still unsure on quite how it works, but the global lightning has a relatively low hit chance, we're talking between 30 and 60% or so. I've not figured out what actually changes the hit chance. Weirdly, it's not accuracy. I think it might be elevation or level but I can't really be sure.

In any case, this costs 5 TP to cast and takes one turn to finish the channel and fire.

So I set up in such a way that:
Ezana - Vanguard Staff - Turn 1 - Rite of Rain to increase Lightning's Damage.
Julio - Turn 2 - Casts +2 TP on Ezana.
Quietus - Move Ezana's turn up to next.
Ezana - Turn 3 - Cast Global Lightning.
Benedict - Turn x - Cast "Now" on Ezana.
Ezana - Turn X+1 - Global Lightning.

This gets out a Global Lightning around turn 10 of round 1.

Then:
Medina - Double Item - Ranged HP Pellet/Ranged HP Pellet - Grants all the above 2 TP.
Julio - Casts +2 TP on Ezana
Benedict - Casts "Now" on Ezana
Ezana Cast - Global Lightning.
Medina - Double Item - Ranged HP Pellet/Ranged HP Pellet - Grants all the above 2 TP - continue for infinite lightning.

I didn't go that deep on it but I did use Ezana's ultimate with Ezana, Julio's +2 TP, and then the Quietus in a similar manner; only once per battle, though. It saved me in the fight with Minister Kamsell at The Source since it managed to paralyze the annoying mages on the other side long enough to kill them off.

eh... I'm finding her less useful than people have said she would be. half of the time the AI just ignores her decoy and attacks my party, or it gets blown up in one hit. When it explodes it only does like 40 damage. Or the decoy retreats toward the rest of my party resulting in an AOE spell hitting other people. and then have to wait another 2 turns before being able to put another decoy out. Ball Toss is the most worthless 1 TP ability in the game. If Picoletta could hit harder or her racket had more than 1 range, or if she had speed on par with Anna and Hughette, then I could her having more utility, but as it is she's still on the bottom tier for me, below Lionel. The only use I've had for her is using the decoy to grab spoils that dropped too far out of the way.

Yeah I'm definitely not underleveled if I'm getting 2-4 EXP with each action I take. Piccoletta is just not very good. Tried putting the decoy two squares in front of a character? Enemy archers completely ignore it and shoot Medina in the face twice. Put the decoy in the marketplace in Wolfort town to pull enemies away from the stairs in Chapter 7? Nope, they ran right for the stairs.

They only go for the decoy when they can get a back attack or followup but you can't control the direction the decoy faces.

Ezana is great especially since she can buff herself AND another caster (Narve)'s lightning spells at the start of a fight. Problem I hit late game is that her full screen lightning hit rate was down to like 36% against higher evasion units like cavalry. Keeping her going becomes Medina or Julio's full time job.

Frederica has KO TP+ and also can synergize with Medina's ability to toss oil jugs around.

Corentin I liked the least of the mages. Ice Walls were fun for a bit but faded in value outside of chokepoint maps like the Whiteholm Bridge. Silence was outstanding, though. I do want to try his combo setup with Giovanna when I unlock her ice ability in NG+.

Hardly conclusive, though. Anyone know how to increase its accuracy?

It seems based on Ezana's level or magic stat vs. target level or magic defense stat.

I was using the Rite to grind spoils/coin in the level 10 tavern fight because she would always miss least one, which let Lionel go through to pick up all the bags. Once I hit a higher level (31 or so?) the hit rate reached 100% on all targets so I couldn't do it there anymore.

Giovanna was insanely powerful when I did New Game+ female-only playthrough. On a whole bunch of maps, I gave her the "move first accessory," had her move enough to proc Trekking for TP. Then on her next turn, her gauge was full and she unleashed Gaia's Roar. Had Medina item her, used the TP-up quietus, and she was able to Gaia's Roar again on her 3rd turn. This took out about half a dozen units in the bridge fight and basically the whole right side of the map in the Source fight.

So yeah, Giovanna takes effort, but of all the "takes effort" characters, I think she has the best payoff.

I can’t find info on how much is strictly necessary. Anyone know off hand how much upgrades rise in cost or do I need to try to get 99 of everything?

Milo's weapons use Fiber-type materials to unlock abilities. She needs Spider Silk to get her Level 2 weapon and Exotic Flower for Level 3.
Cordelia's weapons use Stone-type materials to unlock abilities. She needs Crystal to get her Level 2 weapon and Exotic Flower for Level 3.
Avlora's weapons use Iron-type materials to unlock abilities. She needs Silver to get Level 2 weapon and Electrum for Level 3.

For each of the Level 1 abilities, you need 2 of the basic material listed above, then 6, then 10, then 10+1 Quality, then 15+1 Quality, a total of 43 basic material plus 2 Quality.
For Level 2 abilities, it's 2 Quality, then 6, then 10, then 10 plus 1 Superior, for a total of 28 Quality and 1 Superior for the row. Avlora needs another 15 Quality and 1 Superior because she has a fifth unlock in her 2nd row.
Level 3's first ability is 2 Superior, then 10 Superior if you really want the 2nd one.

Not sure how many Exotic Flowers you get per playthrough but if you have to choose, Milo's is more valuable.
