Don't forget "card carrying" as a political term comes from the Red Scare in the US to describe communists, partly to show just how depraved they were to be an actual official commie, but mostly because everyone loves alliteration.

Also most Americans aren't formally members of a party and don't carry cards. Communists doing that is Weird and Different to them in a way it isn't to the many people in this thread who do now or have formerly had a little red card of their own in their wallet.

I was circumcised for phimosis when I was 13. Recovering from the operation wasn't fun but the effects afterwards aren't huge, or you wouldn't see the entire white male WASP population of America being put through it generation after generation. In my particular case it would have saved me several months as a teenager of having my penis look like corned beef and feel like fire. Still sympathetic to banning it on consent grounds but no it really really isn't equivalent to FGM (which also doesn't happen at infancy iirc?)

I've been probed once for saying Ghana's excess deaths reporting system is not as advanced as France's.

Right now the group is eating itself a bit as they have ousted one of the Asian admins for being anti-black and the admin is going through calling out 'wheat' posters who liked any of the other admins posts to make them explain their actions.

'Claim to be'? They were monarchies, mate, universally accepted at the time as such. Monarchy==hereditary is in your head, and succession even in hereditary monarchies can be...fuzzy to say the least. The Tudors come to mind.
