I actually had something like that happen with my heating - some weirdness with them crossing up my account with someone with a similar address meant that the best way they could think of to rectify matters was to refund us both everything we'd paid over a couple of months then credit both our accounts with the full amount each of us had paid, so I basically got a free year or so of hot water and heat.

(This was after their phone app went haywire and took 70-ish £1 "verification payments" which they likewise refunded me in full and let me keep the credit - I find it hard to hold the fairly frequent little admin cockups the small firm that looks after our CHAP system makes when they're normally so quick and generous when correcting them)
We’ve got a smart meter in our new place and a little after I gave them our first reading they credited my account with nearly £650 for some reason. I assume at some point it’ll disappear again but I’m not going to ask them about it until then.

Regarding GICs I thought that even beyond any issues of how well the GIC itself is being run the whole thing was sized to the demand occurring when trans people were much less likely to come out of the closet, and now they're experiencing an order of magnitude more people lining up while providing adequate resources for trans health care isn't a priority in the current political climate
How long does it take for the census data to be compiled / released? I’m assuming it’ll reveal an absolutely massive increase in people identifying as trans over the last census that will show how woefully inadequate the current system is.

Kinda off topic but the corruption talk reminded me of a personal crack ping moment I had a while ago:

Working in academia one of the things you get pelted with spam for is fake conferences. But what I didn’t realise until a colleague told me about it was that there’s fake conferences where the attendee knows it’s fake and the whole thing is basically a tag-team scam on the academic institution to give the ‘conference’ organiser some cash and the academic an expenses-paid holiday.

gently caress fake conferences, a lot of 'real' conferences are this as well.

Large, publicly funded research orgs are frequently a complete mess both financialy and managerially, whether they're trying to actually ddo useful work, or whether they're just there to soak up loose money from whatever department.
Yea the last conference I was at featured a heavier drinking schedule than most music festivals I’ve attended, with a pretty obscene feast in an art gallery to close it out.

It was all EU funded though, haha! *flips the bird while running out the door*

You have to book two appointments when you book, so they are, seemingly, attempting to make sure people get both of them. You can't just book one and they have to be within a certain window after each other too.
This seems to be dependent on GP surgery; my partner booked both jabs at the same time but they just gave me the card with the date of my first jab on it and told me they’d be in touch to arrange a second.

Presumably if the date comes and goes I won’t be allowed to call the surgery to check and will just have to ~trust the system~

E: Also, anecdotal but it seems like most people I know of my age (late 30s) have already had the first jab by now; maybe we all have at least some qualifying condition but it’s very confusing when officially they’re still supposed to be targeting over-50s

What's the best way of supporting artists? I'm guessing it's not buying off Amazon!
If they’re on Bandcamp that’s pretty good I believe. You’re correct that Spotify pays utter trash; I tend to use their algorithm to find new music and then go buy the albums off Bandcamp.

E: The first Friday of each month is Bandcamp Friday where 100% of what you spend goes to the artist.

I got scam call once purporting to be from HMRC saying I owed taxes or whatever, which had me going for a while just because they never actually got around to asking for money or even implying that I could make the problem go away by paying them. (I eventually wised up and hung up, presumably they would have got around to it eventually.)

My partner once came up to me very concerned because she'd gotten a nasty email from somebody claiming to have video of her masturbating to porn that they were going to spread around to friends and family, until I pointed out that 1) it's a common scam and 2) the porn computer doesn't have a webcam
