I read the comic way way back in the day and had forgotten most of it and for some reason when I was watching the show I kept hearing 'Atom Eve' as 'Adam Eve' which was real confusing. It doesn't help that they changed the logo on her chest from a female gender symbol superimposed with an atom design to a female gender symbol that is crossed out

Plus I'm a huge idiot, that didn't help either. :v:

I noticed that she has shorts rather than a bikini bottom for her outfit too.

The best thing about this is the voice cast, everyone is so good in their roles, i love Jason Mantzoukas as Rex Splode, the perfect voice for such a smarmy rear end in a top hat. I get the feeling this is a real passion project to Steve Yuen, having a half Asian superhero out there front and center.

My biggest issue with it is A) the animation is very generic, it looks a lot like the really forgettable DC animated movies that lack any distinct style, but the comic didn't really have anything special about its artwork either. It's serviceable to the plot but that's about it. and B) everyone is pretty much just another hero, maybe gender or aged swapped; Atom Eve is Invisible Woman, Rex is Boom Boom, Multi-Kate is Multiple Man, I choose to believe Robot is Robot Man due to their copper colouring and more Doom Patrol homages is good, and so on. Obviously having "Superman but this" isn't something unique to Invincible and it's also hard to think of new and unique powers, still it sorta makes me think of the Venture Bros superheroes but without the jokes. I mentioned this in the BSS thread and a Goon mentioned how it showed a deep and long history of superheroes, which yea I totally get that feeling from it, but still it can't help but feel derivative.

Story is good enough to keep me interested and make those two issues not really problems. It is a Kirkman comic so I prepaired for it to meander and loose focus after an initial major story hook of Omni-Man killing the Guardians for some reason, was he doing it because he wanted to, was it because he was being controlled? Why did Robot let Kevin Michael Richardson out of his cell? . I am bracing myself for some "i know the world is about to end but i have high school drama to deal with!" kind of stuff as well.

Yea, they had Sun God, the Rider, the Norn, i can't remember the rest. Hyperion is also Superman and his team is straight up the Justice League. But they're different enough that they don't seem like repainted originals, here they really feel like it.

My only experiance with Invincible is that crossover where he met the Avengers and asked if Luke Cage's name was Black Man after being introduced to Spider-Man.

I might as well just dig up the panel

I am kind of worried about Atom Eve's arc because she's exactly the kind of character that creators who are guys would do terrible things to in order to motivate the heroes.

Rip Wish.com Hellboy. though I wonder what Cecil's endgame is.

Pretty sure the line "where do you think he's from, Jupiter?" Is a referance to Jack from Jupiter who did't make it into the Boys, other than in porn.

Hellroy knew something was going to happen as he left his notebook in the closet so Debbie can find it

Its weird, Gillian Jacobs sounds so different as Atom Eve, maybe because i'm used to her being Britta.

I figure Robot is going to use the Blue Clones tech to clone the Guardians, or at least one of them, hoping to maybe to find out what happened. His obvious concern over Monster Girl suggests that he's not another secret villain.

Man Omni-man probably watches the whole thing, knowing he could have stopped it, but didn't because street level crime is beneath him.

Ah... yeah you're probably right. I guess he was just confident enough that he wouldn't die. I figured the shot of Omni-man with Mark was either him imagining what he wanted, or Omni-man showing up only after the government and Atom Eve got called, and flew over to check himself. But now that you're making me think about it, you're probably right. It was really him and he was watching the whole time, and when mark saw him he super-sped away. But he really wanted to teach him a lesson. Dang man.

I'm pretty sure Omni-Man would have swooped in if not-Titus had actually looked like he was going to actually kill Mark.

Impossible to say. The way this comic has been adapted, it's both already happened and yet to happen.

I okay, that suggests that it will probably be in the season finale. I'm worried that might drag it on for a long long time.

We don't have to spoiler stuff from the first 3 episodes anymore do we? Just in case, I liked the goon who suggested that Omni-Mans people come to planets to help them, and once they get to a certain point, they just take over because no one can stand against them. Earth probably is one of the few planets with a large number of superheroes and villains so Omni-Man's mission changed, plus he fell in love. He still is planning on taking over, but his timeline has been altered

The romance stuff between Mark and Amber is really dragging now. It's one of those things that simply telling her would fix everything.

Also Omni-Man trying to figure out how to kill his wife

I'm firmly in the camp that the best adaptations take ideas from the source and do something different and I think this show is doing a great job with that.

I've heard this is what happened with the Expanse. The writers of the books are writers on the show, so they took oppertunites to change things, expand characters roles, flesh more stuff out.

And she's naked afterwards.

I am enjoying the series way more than I thought based on my reaction to the comics. I might have to give them a try again. There's only one major spoiler I know from the comics but i think that happens down the line, so i'd be going in fresh.

I really got bored with Preacher before the end of season 1. It was just people with redneck accents being lovely to each other. Once and a while the Angels would pop up and do something interesting would happen but I really did not give a poo poo about the problems of the people of Anneville. Preacher is a road trip story, not just another show about how people interact with each other.

It reminded me a lot of Walking Dead really. "Oh the real monsters are people!" Shut the gently caress up, everyone knows that, you're not saying anything interesting. Maybe people want to see actual monsters and supernatural stuff happening?

American Gods was more of a road trip but I also got bored of that because it didn't have a point. Shadow goes with Mr Wednesday and visits this weird, and then this weirdo, and by halfway through the season i'm confused on what the point is.

There is no such running joke; the running joke was that everyone who can't fly keeps asking a flying hero to take them flying and each time one does it's drawn with the exact same shot with one or both of them saying "this is really gay".

Counterpoint, why are you reading the thread if you haven't watched the episode

Yea, that's my feeling on it. But some people just wanna talk about the show even if they're not caught up. Which is strange to me, especially if its a big serialized show. Imagine going into the Expanse Thread or the Mandolorian threads after watching one episode and seeing that this main character ends up dying because you just can't wait to kramer into the thread and say "wow this is cool!". If you're desprate to share your thoughts as you watch, start a blindwatch thread or something.

boz posted:

So you can cry about getting something spoiled for you

I've seen way too many spoiler babies on here and online in general. Weekly trailers for shows, yea I can totally see people being upset about people talking about them, BUT trailers for the series before it starts or for a movie, you know things, big companies put out to get you to watch their product, yea i don't get why people get so bent out of shape you saw Doop in the new X-men trailer. I've encountered people that don't even want to know cast lists, or hear reviews, they want to go in as blind as possible. Reminds me of Community where Abed was waiting until some Game of Throne Analog finished to watch the whole thing and got mad every time someone tried to talk about the stuff that had been aired and at the end they get Brie Larsen to spoil the whole series for him. I have met people like that, I know someone right now who refuses to watch the Mandolorian until its all done, and doesn't want anyone talked about it and literally got banned from facebook for yelling at people posting Baby Yoda memes because they were spoiling the series for him. Dude, its one of the most popular things right now, you don't get to tell people they can't talk about it because you have some weird idea of watching the whole series that's still coming out. Its different if you discovered an older series and just watching it now, like say Battlestar Galactica. If someone says they're watching it for the first time you're a real rear end in a top hat if you pop in and say "Boomer is a Cylon", but if people are still talking about it, thats on you to catch up.

When its something like Invincible which already has finished in one medium, its a good idea not to just go spoiling it for people who are just watching the show. I remember Game of Thrones Bookreaders being real assholes and dropping spoilers as speculations; "Wow i hope Ned doesn't get executed for doing the right thing at the end of the first season!". Making this a spoiler free thread means people are hopefully not going to do that. Expanse Book Readers have been good in that thread, only mentioning differences between book and show, like this character dies a different way, this one is not in this part in the book, etc.

But I guess Invincible has changed up enough stuff to not be a 1:1 translation?

So far they've mostly switched ordering around so the omni man reveal could be the finale. Basically none of the stuff that happened in the last episode (no orbital lasers, no attack by rob zombies, no teleporting kaiju around) was in the comics because there wasn't any drama and investigation around the guardian's deaths. They died, there was a funeral, the twins dug up immortal the same day, he woke up and went after Nolan. The immortal/omni fight occurred in the middle of town with reporters, civilians, and invincible watching so the whole "why did you kill them" bit was broadcast to everyone. This all happened by like issue 8.

The college stuff happened much later, the demon investigator was more of a joke (he shows up like 30 issues later and proudly declares that he's solved the murders), so really they've just changed things to keep with tv cliffhangers and accelerate some of the background characters story arcs

The show actually sounds like an improvement on the comic. Having there be suspicion on Nathan from the start ads a lot more tension that otherwise it being a mystery. Also having Demon Detective be actually good at his job is a better choice.
