What are the options for playing with the original VAs/same amount of voice acting as the original DE release? I'm afraid to update the game since I mostly prefer reading to narration (I don't like audiobooks) but I like having a voice actor give me a little taste & set the tone when I first meet somebody. I'd be happy to play with the new actors and I'd like to see the new content but I'm not really up for that much people noise.

Is this confirmed? They generally weren't great in addition to being distracting.

There are 3 modes for the voice acting - full (although some narration in dialogue is still silent), psychological (full voices for dialogue, no other narration) or classic (the original voices, and largely unvoiced).

The Chapo guys are all recast unless you're in Classic. Klaasje is also no longer a podcaster - same vibe though, just without the baggage of the original actor. Some characters are the same actors, even minor ones (like Plaisance and Annette at the bookstore), and most of the recasts go for the same vibe as the originals. Some like Lena are very different though (she's got an American drawl now). All around I really like the new voice acting, and the narration is generally great too. Some line reads aren't perfect but that's inevitable with this sheer amount of text. Most of the time the narrator feels like a really high quality audiobook.

Full Cuno is brilliant too, even though he does lack some of the particularly intense mania that the original had. Good in his own right though. And obviously having lots more voiced Kim is worth the replay by itself.

Felix, Will and Virgil have definitely been re-cast. No idea about Matt, but I wouldn't be shocked. I say this as a fan of the pod its for the better because they're not actors.

I'm on day 1 and I'm pretty sure that its maybe Joyce who is the one voice actor thats been retained, and even then I'm not completely sure.

Joyce, Kim, Annette, Plaisance, and Cindy are definitely all the same as the originals. Garte, Lena, Klaasje, Siileng, Cuno, Vicquemare and maybe Cunoesse and Minot are recasts. I haven't spoken to others yet.

Nah I watched the Twitch vod but that comment is spot on.

I was skipping through his videos yesterday to check the voice acting in bits I hadn't yet reached. I saw him talking to Joyce and triggering the communism thought because he'd been picking Funny options - he scoffed at the thought and dismissed it immediately without even exploring the dialogue then said he was "basically a centralist" in real life. I mean I guess he's worth millions so it's not a surprise lol.

Still don't get it. The game explains numerous times how Revachol was unfairly and cruelly hosed. Yet the thought to stand for Revachol, and Revacholiere, the soul of it - is hatered of women and gays which I am just not seeing the connection.

it's not about standing for Revachol, it's reactionary nationalism harking back to the days when actual fascists ruled the country

if La Revacholiere is aligned with any ideology in the actual text of the game it's communism

I also really like Keith, and hate him at the same time. His heart's in the right place for sure, his brain as well - he's very good about talking about what he's thinking about a given development in term of immediate feelings, gut feelings ; and he's also good about what he thinks about that both within the context of the game and from a more meta perspective (what he thinks the game/the game devs are thinking ; what he expects going forward)

All of that is good.
And at the same time... gently caress, but there is *so much* he just doesn't know or understand - general culture stuff, stuff everybody knows, stuff everybody *should* know, stuff someone like him should know intimately. It's infuriating watching such a bright dude miss references all the time, it really is. And it's weird how he's at the same time so bright yet so intellectually lazy.

This has been my wanking in public, please don't revenge porn it.

this is my exact experience with any Keith Ballard LP lmao and his Disco Elysium one is really pronounced about it. It's fine not to know stuff but Keith seems very convinced of his own big-brain all-encompassing knowledge and so the frequent ignorance comes across badly, because it's backed by entirely unearned self-confidence. A dose of humility would do him good

It’s from the part where you’re looking for Ruby. You speak to the twins and they start and they start repeating stuff from Speedfreaks FM that Ruby’s machine has echoed into their heads, and at that point can call the radio station from Kim’s car, and you can them to give Kim a shoutout

I had no idea this existed and would really like to trigger it but talking to the twins doesn't prompt anything of the sort. oh well

I decided to give Klaasje the station call instead of arresting her this time and you can have a rather hard shivers check after and talk with her about the upcoming communist revolution, thats the main reason she has been hiding in Martinaise. I never knew!

If you manage that check it comes up a ton in subsequent dialogues with other people, it rules. It even adds to the ending!

The two dudes playing have pretty entertaining reactions and are super into it, so it's a pretty fun way to vicariously relive playing.

I watched their entire playthrough because they were very entertaining but they're kind of smart idiots at times. Woolie's milquetoast liberalism is hilarious as he reacts violently to anything communist in the game and raves about tankies, moaning about not having a 'bottom-left' political option to go for, and doing stuff like falling completely for Evrart's act and then monologuing for half an hour about how they totally saw through it and are completely 100% sure what's going on

I genuinely love seeing different people's reactions to DE even when they're completely offbase because the game is such a great psychological and political test for the players. yesterday I saw a stream uploaded that seemed promising. the let's player is nonbinary and seemed switched-on and thoughtful. they also mentioned when starting that they'd been warned that one of the characters uses homophobic slurs although they're censored so, trigger warning for that. fine, good even, that's considerate. then when they reached cuno one of their mods suggested muting all game audio. they said 'good idea' and muted it completely then clicked through the conversation as fast as possible because Cuno Is Distasteful and they didn't want to engage with any of the dialogue or even read any of it. never closed a tab so fast in my life lol

It's not broken and it does give you XP, it just doesn't show it in the dialogue window. You can check before and after picking the options and see that it does increase your XP count, for sure.

They've been doing that for a while. In the original, Kim "Kimball" Kitsuragi spent nine months becoming a champion, mastering a skill he detests because it was his duty. Some of Kim's character is sanded away in the interest of letting you do something radical.

The WoolieVersus playthrough is amusing but mostly at the expense of Woolie, who gets upset at there being no "libertarian left" political alignment and goes on extended rants about tankies and misunderstands very basic lines of dialogue (like when he thinks putting soot on Harry's face like warpaint is a blackface thing)
