The question should not be why, but how. As leader of the Labour Party I have clearly outlined how I intend to revitalise Britain. First, we will not destroy businesses who have struggled through coronavirus. Second, we will remind people that police are there to keep us safe. Third, behold this egg.

gently caress me, your bloody post is what's demoralising.

You know we're intelligent enough to tell what an acronym is right? You know we don't turn to dust at the mention of the word nip? You're even allowed to nip out to the shops if you want! I don't mind! It's the context of the word! (Just don't call me one cheers)

I can't speak for all my Asian brothers and sisters, but I'm pretty sure they too have more important concerns than a tiny social-democratic party oop north sharing their name with a slur that tbh I don't even really hear that much anymore. (I usually only ever inadvertently get called it when someone apologises for saying something like it's a bit nippy in front of me lmao) And did you really have to spell out the n-word to make your point??

So in conclusion, gently caress right off with your cynical patronising liberal bollocks you utter oval office, poo poo like this is so loving unhelpful at a time when we're facing really quite serious bigotry and violence around the country.

Mate, I never said it was a huge deal, but “nip” is a racial slur, even if a kind of old fashioned one, and this is the name they chose for their party. If I was naming pretty much anything I wanted to promote (and knew would be frequently abbreviated) I would try to avoid that poo poo. The fact that they didn’t, and what they chose not to bother avoiding is telling.

Bloodly
Nov 3, 2008

Not as strong as you'd expect.
The problem being there's 'nip' as in 'travelling', there's 'nip' as in horticulture, a small cut, 'nipped in the bud' or 'the cold nipped at his hands and feet'. nip as in a small drink 'a nip of whisky', and then 'nip' as in nippon' aka Japanese, the slur you're thinking of.

Don't look for malice what can easily be explained by stupidity or lack of knowledge or it not occuring to people because language. Look hard enough and you can find anything in anything. Same as you can not find something if you're not looking.(And even then it might be in your pocket the whole time.)

I've always experienced some level of racism in this country and now with brexit, covid and the Uyghur stuff it's only become nastier, so please trust me when I say the acronym of a small political party is not a problem and certainly not demoralising. Being told I look like Gok Wan (I don't) rates higher on the racism scale than N.I.P.

You can choose to believe that it's "telling" if you want, but it hadn't even occurred to me about the slur definition until I'd read your post!

Not a single one of my friends or family would be upset by this because the context and intent is clearly not racist in any way. We don't need you to get offended on our behalf in some misguided form of anti-racism.

The name is fine, please focus your energy somewhere else. I will survive don't worry.

To be fair, immediately when I read the name I thought of the slur. Just because something's not intended doesn't mean it can't be characterized. Like imagine if they were called the Friends of Allied Groups and abbreviated that, I mean sure they may not have meant it, but of they didn't think about it then it shows the type of thing they don't think about.

The vaccine supply problems are hitting now so they're limiting first doses for a bit to definitely give second doses to everyone who should have them on schedule.

I got mine in late Jan but that's due to my NHS work.

A few areas of the country ran out of arms before they ran out of jabs so people got called - the official line is still that they're gong to use the next few weeks to ensure second doses get done before moving on to the next cohort.

(And some people like me shamelessly jumped the queue by volunteering at a vaccination centre out of a sense of civic responsibility and not just to get the sweet gay frog nanotechnology early)

They also don’t know how to geography or local politics. There is this whole thing where Derbyshire is long, it’s so long that a lot of it is more north of Manchester. The problem is that the county capital is right on the southern tip next to Nottingham, and so far as administration goes it’s utterly unconnected to the rest of the county. Basically the northern parts want to be part of either the Sheffield or the Manchester local authorities if only because it would give us some protection from the local landowners we are all still beholden to, for example; “Want the supertram? well the Renishaw estate says “gently caress YOU”, “want the HS2 not to go through your house? well the Renishaw estate says “We are not having it near our land gently caress YOU””

and along comes the Northern Independence Party telling us we are not part of their cabal. Well gently caress you all too, look at a god drat map.

They've defined the North as the EU regions of North East, North West, and Yorkshire and the Humber, but they've said that any of the counties at the border are welcome to join. I don't think they're explicitly defining themselves as anti-Derbyshire

The commonly accepted definition of "Northern England" using historic county lines doesn't include Derbyshire - there's a map here:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devolution_to_the_North_of_England

The argument that parts of Derbyshire have more in common with their Northern neighbours than the rest of the county to the South is a valid one, but splitting up historic counties is the kind of thing that should be self-determined.
