It's (some) elections time again, time to get out and

We're also into the long flat of Covid now, which will hopefully last for the summer at least, although other places are not so fortunate.

In Other News :sax:

• Mass arrests happen during protests against the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill.
• 99 year old man dies.
• 39 Post Office workers convicted of theft, fraud, and false accounting have their names cleared after one of the UK's most widespread miscarriages of justice.
• Four Merseyside police officers have been convicted after one of them beat up a member of the public and the others helped him to cover it up.
• Six English football clubs form a new super special league in Europe and then immediately drop out, as is tradition.
• The EU approves the EU–UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement.
• Boris Johnson redecorates his flat.
• Stage three of the government's conditional lockdown easing could enable larger numbers of people to gather together, including at indoor venues by May 17.

I think the closest thing you could do based on the society we have at present is to hold policing as close as possible to the original Peelian Principles (I don't believe that police ever met all of those, in Peel's day or now, but there can at least be the idea that they ought to be aspiring to them), splitting off investigation, mental health crisis, domestic incidents, etc. to separate specifically qualified services that aren't 'hit with crime stick', and more widespread community sousveillance of policing, with community calls for action when something goes wrong.

And of course do a shitload more stuff to reduce crime and disorder at the root, like better preschool, cleaner air and water, nicer community spaces, and a sense of belonging and participation at the local community level.

Also the same people who go on about how they've got 30 locks on their back yard gate and cameras and floodlights because a youth left a cigarette end near the jitty while once and the Lithuanians are interfering with their garden gnomes are the ones complaining that the bin men won't go in their yard.

It's that and absolutism.

Masks aren't 100% effective so might as well not bother, social distancing isn't 100% effective so might as well not bother.

Never mind that cumulatively all you're really trying to do in a pandemic is stop the healthcare system from collapsing during the peaks, because if that happens then a tidal wave of poo poo gets unleashed where people end up dead of minor accidents/injuries, and that cumulatively adding things that reduce transmission by 20% here and 30% there and so on is the best shot we have at stopping that happening.

That's too joined up though, and I guess in turn ties back into individualism again because it requires acknowledging that the reason you're extremely unlikely to die from a razor cut in the 21st century UK is in part because of living in a society, and having a system of healthcare with a capacity.

Yeah, we still need more solar rollout, especially with how good panels have got in the past 10 years, and more nuclear for baseload so that the option on those other days isn't just "turn the gas up" (or "rely on interconnects from France without pausing to think where all their spare energy is coming from").

And to stop loving about with old growth forests in North America and calling it carbon neutral.

But on the good days like today, it really jumps out that wind and solar aren't trifling parts of the grid anymore.

This I don't disagree with though, deer are already here and wild and without predators, meaning their only deaths are hunger, disease, or exposure, compared to which most hunting is humane.

It's a shame that the British conception of hunting has to go and throw a bunch of completely unnecessary pageantry and inhumanity into the mix.

If that happens, there's probably mass slaughters and piles of burning cows on the more industrial farms, and the smaller farms where they do actually like the cows probably go bankrupt.

There's a lot of cow products that do still get used industrially though, from tallow to leather, so that would all probably collapse too.

That's not going to happen though, Lund University recently did a study into dairy futures, and there's a few plausible scenarios, most of which have some combination of plant based dairy and lab-grown dairy protein vastly reducing the amount of cattle over a period of decades, but still leaving some.
