I turned vegetarian when I was 15 and had to explain to so many aghast people that I just stopped answering any questions about it and told people i didn't want to talk about it I started eating meat a while back and ended up turning vegetarian again because I was so creeped out by the number of people literally congratulating me out of he blue for eating meat again

Talk of being "aspirational" and "getting on" is meaningless without something concrete behind it. In this day and age the type of people who are going to be encouraged by that kind of rhetoric are also the kind of people who are relying heavily on investments, housing wealth and pensions, and are therefore always going to align closer to the Tories who have made clear their intention to always prop those things up. In any case when talking about places like Hartlepool the polling is clear that people want radical economic change and fairer distribution of wealth: talking about aspiration in the same way Blair did only works when the economy is booming, not when people are crushed in the middle of a pandemic.

Mebh posted:So as the left what do we do from here? It's not like we're all going to rejoin labour to try to fight for a left wing candidate to take over their shitshow. The only way out is another party backed by the socialist lot from labour and that's... just not going to happen? If you believe in parliamentary politics at all, some kind of push to PR is necessary for any sort of left wing political party to not die on the vine like every other left party since 1945 Outside of parliament the big thing seems to be tenants unions and eviction resistance since if there's one thing a lot of people can agree on its that landlords are bastards

OwlFancier posted:Except I don't think that is what is happening, starmer is just getting less and less popular as time goes on, and losing more and more of his institutional support. It's because the Labour right hear "you need to stop fighting amongst yourselves" and go "yes, it's disgusting how the left keep resisting, obviously people want us to purge harder"

I don't think he even photoshopped it, he just put his face up there and called himself a woman Like all the conservative "comedians" who are obsessed with trans women going into women's bathrooms and so dress up in drag and per on women in bathrooms to prove their "point"

In 2017 the Tories were poo poo scared that Labour were creating a solid cohort of die hard left wing young people that was going to spell electoral disaster for them down the line. Keith has successfully crushed that for now so the Tories can breathe a bit easier. Meanwhile the two things that you could really get Gen Xers on are the environment and the fact that housing is so expensive their kids can't get on the housing ladder, not to mention the cost of social care and uni. But Labour are so beholden to landlords that they will just give up that cohort for the foreseeable.

My father in law is an archetypical centrist dad and he thinks homelessness and stuff is bad, but if you talk about any concrete numbers about how bad things actually are he just refuses to believe it's true.

I've been seeing a take recently that New Labour were always racist and authoritarian, and it's simply not true! New Labour encouraged immigration and multiculturalism...until it started biting them on the rear end in the media at which point they wholeheartedly embraced racist narratives and policy. (They were always always authoritarian shitheads to young people as part of their appeal to "Mondeo man" and "Worcester woman")

Munin posted:I think it's just as much Tone trying to bring himself back. Reel Politik had the right take on it, where they pointed out that Keith has less direct political experience than Wes Streeting, and is just clearly out of his depth. He also doesn't have a natural power base within the party so has surrounded himself with loyal but also inexperienced advisers. Hence why when it looks like poo poo is going south Mandelson and co are managing to worm their way into his ear because Keith is flailing and has nowhere else to turn. It's really and indictment on the left that we couldn't convince soft left voters that Keith had very little experience and would not be able to deliver on his promise of competency, though equally those same soft leftists are being very stubborn that they were extremely naive and got absolutely hoodwinked in the leadership election.

I've never had to use mousetraps (on account of having 5 cats) but have come downstairs to see one of them had brought in a live mouse, nearly lost it and rectified the situation...by half crushing it under the lid of a sewing machine. Seriously it was like something out of a Looney Tunes movie, I never did find out which one was responsible
