The Telegraph was genuinely a high-quality conservative broadsheet (stop laughing at the back, you) that once rivalled the Times in stature and international reputation, but the Barclay Brothers buying it out in 2004 dealt it and its reputation a slow but mortal wound. It's been getting slowly and steadily more crap year after year ever since. Peter Oborne's 2015 resignation letter offers a decent picture of what the paper's decline looked like from the inside.

I’ve never not voted before but gently caress me there seems to be nobody worth voting for. If anyone else who’s planning on actually voting in the West of England mayoral thing knows of a good reason to vote for any of them I’m all ears.

IIRC, the Green candidate is anti-union, so that polling card really is an absolute wasteland.

Hrm. On the one hand, the local Green mayoral candidate's a wrong 'un. On the other hand, the media and commentariat only know how to interpret Labour losing votes to the Greens in one way, and it's a good and useful way. Protest voting for a mass hallucination of a left-environmentalist party is a weird concept.

Darth Walrus
Feb 13, 2012
Went straight Green - the PCC looks OK even if the metro mayoral candidate is rubbish, and the Greens' not-entirely-deserved reputation as the left-wing protest party means I feel I sent the message I want to. I considered spoiling my mayoral ballot, but I think that Green as a protest is more likely to peg you as part of an angry leftie demographic.

Right, but the Lib Dems have always specialised in local, decentralised politics. Each Lib Dem constituency party is practically a small, well-resourced political party in its own right, and they're really good at picking up councils by presenting a convincing argument that they're the professional adults who can fix your potholes, rebuild your leisure centre, and not have any embarrassing sex/bribery scandals. That message may not be true, of course, but they're very good at selling it.

This also forms part of the reason why they keep eating poo poo at the national level - the party is so fragmented that they have serious difficulty combining a million local issues into a single national vision.

I'm a US-person, so forgive me for my ignorance, but I'm rather fascinated by the fact that you have like six parties in your election. I was under the impression that the UK has a first-past-the-post system, so shouldn't that have mathematically caused the system to trend towards having only two? How is it that the smaller parties can still exist and get votes?

Some exist to put pressure on the two main parties by threatening to steal their votes in key marginals, and others are more of a national coordinating body for local elections (which are up for grabs by just about anyone due to their extremely low barriers to entry).

This article is incredible:

https://twitter.com/joshhalliday/status/1390664951321219081?s=21

quote:

Labour head office was “obsessed with us getting a flag”, said one organiser, bemoaning what they felt was a lack of substance to justify it. “There was no fleshing out what the flag means, or what policies have changed because we’re now patriotic. It was just: bung a flag up.”

A fortnight before polling day, party activists were told to hand out St George’s flag leaflets urging voters to “display this poster with pride in your window”. Labour, a party searching for direction after 11 years out of power, wrapped itself in the flag to try win back voters who deserted it over Brexit and Jeremy Corbyn. The plan failed.

...

Labour insiders sensed a “misplaced confidence” in Starmer’s approach to the byelection. Williams was appointed by the national executive committee without contest and the byelection date was set for the same day as the mayoral and council elections, arguably making Labour’s task more difficult against the popularity of Houchen. The date “never crossed their minds - they thought they were gonna win”, said one activist of Starmer’s team.

The selection of Jim McMahon, the shadow transport secretary, to run the byelection campaign also raised eyebrows. One of his ideas, he told a parliamentary Labour party meeting, was to urge Hartlepudlians to forego their usual summer holidays and stay in Hartlepool instead. “Toes were curling. The WhatsApp group just lit up with people saying: ‘What the hell is going on?’” Another “crackpot idea” was having Williams hand out heart-shaped stickers encouraging people to support local businesses. “It’s parish council stuff, not a parliamentary byelection,” said one Labour fixer.

The St George’s leaflets were also Labour HQ’s idea. Speaking to the Guardian shortly after conceding defeat live on Sky News at 3am on Friday, McMahon defended Labour’s campaign and said he found it “staggering that there’s anyone in politics who believes you can aspire to be the government of a country when you’re not proud to fly its flag”. He said recovering from Labour’s “devastating” 2019 campaign was a long-term project and that the party was “doing the right thing in the right way at the right time”.
