The Telegraph was genuinely a high-quality conservative broadsheet (stop laughing at the back, you) that once rivalled the Times in stature and international reputation, but the Barclay Brothers buying it out in 2004 dealt it and its reputation a slow but mortal wound. It's been getting slowly and steadily more crap year after year ever since. Peter Oborne's 2015 resignation letter offers a decent picture of what the paper's decline looked like from the inside.

Hrm. On the one hand, the local Green mayoral candidate's a wrong 'un. On the other hand, the media and commentariat only know how to interpret Labour losing votes to the Greens in one way, and it's a good and useful way. Protest voting for a mass hallucination of a left-environmentalist party is a weird concept.

Went straight Green - the PCC looks OK even if the metro mayoral candidate is rubbish, and the Greens' not-entirely-deserved reputation as the left-wing protest party means I feel I sent the message I want to. I considered spoiling my mayoral ballot, but I think that Green as a protest is more likely to peg you as part of an angry leftie demographic.

crispix posted:yeah i get that but a swing like that to the lib dems of all things lol Right, but the Lib Dems have always specialised in local, decentralised politics. Each Lib Dem constituency party is practically a small, well-resourced political party in its own right, and they're really good at picking up councils by presenting a convincing argument that they're the professional adults who can fix your potholes, rebuild your leisure centre, and not have any embarrassing sex/bribery scandals. That message may not be true, of course, but they're very good at selling it. This also forms part of the reason why they keep eating poo poo at the national level - the party is so fragmented that they have serious difficulty combining a million local issues into a single national vision.

I was under the impression that the UK has a first-past-the-post system, so shouldn't that have mathematically caused the system to trend towards having only two? How is it that the smaller parties can still exist and get votes? Some exist to put pressure on the two main parties by threatening to steal their votes in key marginals, and others are more of a national coordinating body for local elections (which are up for grabs by just about anyone due to their extremely low barriers to entry).
