And :10bux: says the Civic ate a timing belt. That generation is seriously the bastard child of Civics in general; almost everything on it was a single-generation part, including nearly all of the drivetrain parts (though 06-08 liked to crack engine blocks). The engines were decent so long as you maintained them, but they were a bit more finicky than the 88-00 D series, and ate timing belts around 120-140k if you didn't change them (also super cramped under the hood compared to older ones). 7th and 8th gen Civics I take a hard pass on. Later ones look like a pain in the rear end to work on (step 1 for anything: remove cowl)

I grew up a hardcore Apple II guy with tons of games on 5 & 1/4th" black floppys, learned BASIC there and had the original Macs with the sweet Black & White 7" monitor. I switched when XP got to essential parity with the Mac OS of the time and I was trying to get more games into my life, so I'm stoked to get my little buddy into gaming on the master system.

In my role as "Cool Uncle", I decided to get him Valheim, Subnautica & Age of Empires II Remastered on Steam to be opened on his birthday Friday when he gets the rig, my sister's boyfriend is at least capable enough to get all this installed in time to hand it over to him to receive the gifts.

Roblox, Portal, Teardown, Stardew Valley, Sid Meier's Pirates and/or Sea of Thieves - all on the list for future gifts so far. Any other suggestions for a 10 year old kid who I am not being allowed to train as a professional PUBG/Fortnite player... yet....?

Hey computer touchers,

On Win10 Pro, can you use a Windows Hello capable webcam if your motherboard doesn't support a TPM chip? I'm finding conflicting info. I have to buy a webcam for my IOP anyway (old one got lost in the move), and it's not a lot more for one of the lower end ones with the IR sensor that Hello needs.

I already use a PIN to login, which is part of Windows Hello, or so I thought. It'd just be nice to have it unlock as soon as I sit down at my desk, and log me into my account (and log SO into her account) without a password or PIN.

From the system screen - pretty sure I'm running the latest public build?
code:
Edition	Windows 10 Pro
Version	21H1
Installed on	12/14/2019
OS build	19043.1023
Experience	Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.3740.0
If not, Target has a $30 Logitech in stock that I'll grab today.

Yeah, my original plan was to build him a system until I realized that a $600 pre-built comes with a $300 video card in it, impossible to assemble with cheaper parts at the moment - and the 1060 I have spare and thought I might keep price down with is not as good as what this comes with this in the overall scheme - plus shipping from LA to the midwest. I was ready to walk them through putting the 8 cables that won't fit anywhere else together & installing drivers and OS etc, the kid is bigly Lego competent, and my sister & her boyfriend are fairly capable computer-oriented youngish people (and building a modern system is simple) -- but this works great because I'm no longer Tech Support for any issues they have and they got it in time for the kid's birthday.

On the other "Good advice" side - I convinced her a desktop vs the initial equiv price gamer laptop concept means zero arguments about whether it's coming with on vacation/trips to the Outdoors. Tis a desktop, lad. It stays home.

She's pretty happy about that.

Shout out to Carmageddon for delivering such amazing squelchy sound effects for when you hit a pedestrian at speed. The remake had the pedestrian electro bastard ray powerup in the EXACT SAME PLACE as the original game in the first map in the American football stadium so you grab it, annihilate both teams and end up with like 11 minutes on your timer very quickly. It ruled. You could then take your time and destroy the other racers at your leisure. I'm wondering if anyone ever finished a race by killing all the pedestrians, that seemed a little over the top, psycho level dedication to ped murder.

So I got some words of encouragement from corporate HR, basically saying I'm a "hero" and "obviously very dedicated to recovery" for lining up IOP and an AA group <24 hours after getting out of detox. Was also told I can take the full 30 days off if I want, and can extend it as long as I'm in active treatment. I don't WANT to take that long off, but I do need at least a few days, maybe a week, before I go back. I'm not sleeping worth a poo poo now that I'm out (I had access to rx sleep meds in there), it's gonna take me awhile to adjust to trying to sleep sober. I have benadryl, but that didn't make a dent last night. Chainsmoking probably didn't help much either.

The only ones I've been able to find plug into a slot on a motherboard specifically for a TPM. Mine's too old for that. And frankly, as long as I can reliably overclock this fucker from 3.3 to 4.5 GHz all day without it even thinking about breaking a sweat (until I fire up Chrome, so drat bloated now), I don't plan to replace it.

Though I went by my storage unit and found my old webcam (Logitech C270, so not quite scraping bottom of the line, but close), so a fancypants camera compatible with Hello is a luxury that can wait for another day. Especially with how much I'm forking out for treatment... I live paycheck to paycheck, SO is a bit better with her money, but we don't share any accounts. I've just gotten so used to face unlock on my phone that it'd be nice to have on the PC, and I know the capability is there in Windows.

Wife just went in for gall bladder removal, and, since they’re going in the same way, to have a minor hernia around her belly button repaired. We think the gall bladder is what landed her in the hospital (to the tune of $10k) last year, so hopefully won’t have to deal with that ever again. Shouldn’t be any issues, but her will is up to date, because medical procedure.
Mildly annoyed at how there’s 37 different entities charging for stuff, but that’s just how it works now. We’re completely avoiding insurance and just going cash price, since her insurance, like many, is worthless.
So I’ll just be sitting here in the lobby shitposting for the next couple hours.

Edit: I’ve also been up 3.5 hours earlier than normal. My alarm to wake up at my normal time just went off... At least we’ll be done before lunch.

drat sounds like you have a good job haha.

I can't imagine my current company doing anything like that.

When I was getting sober I got out of the hospital only for my parents to tell me that I "didn't have a problem" and my mom charged me $800/month rent when I had to move back in with her while she drank wine all day not working.

Since I have removed myself from the situation I'm not bitter about it anymore but yeah I didn't have insurance at the time so I couldn't get meds until I was already like 1.5 years sober. If you need something in a pinch take Valerian root and melotonin.

Don't worry about quitting the cigs, I didn't quit until I was already sober for 2 years and it's really not worth risking your sobriety over.

As for AA, you don't have to like going to it just keep going everyday you can and get a sponsor. You can hate your loving sponsor just make sure you have someone to call everyday. If you need a new sponsor get a new sponsor before you stop talking to your current one.

I try not to subscribe to the "one drink could ruin your life or kill you thing" personally because I don't think it's really that true. But I do believe that one drink will lead to 100 more because for me it always does and every-time that eventually I'll wind up hanging out with people that carry guns and sell drugs lol.

Not real recovery advice but one thing that helped with me getting sober was just leaning into the crazy withdrawal feelings I was having. Don't know if I would advise this but I kind of enjoyed being batshit insane for a few months. Some of it was a bit out of pocket though. I was applying to jobs at the time and I called a recruiter that was being lovely to me a "mop pushing failure".

That's the kind of champion insane behavior that you can only get sober for real.

(I regret nothing gently caress him)

For something hoppy with a seltzer pop look up Hop water. Lagunitas sells some in bottles, if you're the homebrewing type its really easy to just add some hops to water with a little lemon juice and carbonate it. Super refreshing with 0% alcohol. Kombucha can have alcohol, usually very little but there are some that can pack upwards of 3%.

No stitches needed, but they cleaned it and glued it up well. I think if we had left it he would have ended up with a nasty scar.

Guys... don't loving use Clearcover. They denied my hit and run claim (which is covered under UM/UIM in Texas, according to the Texas Dept of Insurance, and a lawyer I had a quick consult with). Got hung up on once, called back, sat on hold 20 minutes, got a "I'm sorry, we are closed for the day, please leave a message".

They did eventually call back, and I'm supposed to get a call back from a supervisor at some point today (not holding my breath), they said they're looking into it, but kept trying to argue that hit and run is NOT covered under UM/UIM in Texas (TX Dept of Insurance disagrees and the lawyer I had a very brief chat with). I just got off the phone with Jake from State Farm, I'm getting WAY more coverage for $95/month. Full coverage on both cars, maxed out PIP (didn't even have PIP before), an extra $10k in AD&D on top of what we already have through work ($70k for me through work, not sure what SO's is)... I'm waiting for them to call back and take my money.

Tried to buy online, but their website wouldn't take my card (it just disappeared as soon as I entered it), so I elected to have an agent call. Turns out I got one that lives right by my parents. But since I'm dealing with an agent, I have to wait for them to get everything typed up. :sigh:

Already filed a complaint with the TX Dept of Insurance. Brokeback might get fixed - I'm going to start stripping the front clip down in a bit. Depends on what's bent.

e: they finally called back and admitted they hosed up; they asked for photos of the damage, the VIN, and the odometer. And what shop I want it repaired at. :laffo: it ain't worth having a shop fix, it's heading to an auction.
e2: called them asking about a rental. *I* have to handle that, pay full retail, and they'll reimburse me at $35/day in "4-6 weeks". You can't get a car for under $100/day here. What a bunch of assclowns.

I think she's burning through about 5 gallons in 3ish weeks.
