AEW Dynamite for 5/5 via FWOnline.com

quote:

For the first time I can recall, there was a "Parental Discretion Advised" message before Dynamite tonight.

There were two rings set up throughout the show.

**********

Before the opener, Don Callis cut a promo comparing Nakazawa to the greats of Japanese wrestling. He then revealed that Nakazawa would wrestle tonight's match alone as Omega wasn't here.

However, during Kingston and Moxley's entrance, Omega attacked with the championship belt.

Jon Moxley & Eddie Kingston defeated Kenny Omega & Michael Nakazawa (w/ Don Callis)

Omega and Nakazawa beat down Kingston in the ring until Moxley ran in to even the odds. Moxley and Kingston brought the fight to the floor where they sent their opponents into the barricades. Back in the ring, they double-teamed Nakazawa. Kingston hit a Kitchen Sink, but Omega ran in to break up the pin.

With the official distracted, Nakazawa landed a low blow on Kingston and tried to choke him out, allowing his team to take control. Omega isolated Kingston in the corner before hitting a Kotaro Crusher for two. A straight chop woke Kingston up, leading to a chop exchange. Omega broke the combo with an enziguiri before hitting the first part of You Can't Escape. Kingston avoided the moonsault and hit a running clothesline, allowing him to tag in Moxley.

Moxley teed off on Nakazawa with repeated boots in the corner. Nakazawa "fired up" and removed his shirt but was summarily folded up with a German suplex and stuck with a piledriver. Omega broke up the count at two. Moxley applied a rear naked choke as Kingston ran interference, but Kingston then offered Omega a chance to save his partner. Omega refused and walked off.

Kingston and Omega then hit a clothesline into a half and half suplex combo for the win.

– After the match, the tag champion Young Bucks came out and exchanged words, but it was just a distraction, allowing the Good Brothers to beat down Moxley and Kingston. The Good Brothers hit a Magic Killer on Moxley and Matt Jackson followed it up with a superkick.

Omega came back out flanked by his personal cameraman Brandon Cutler. The Good Brothers held Kingston up, allowing Omega to hit him with a One Winged Angel as Nick Jackson mocked counting three.

**********

It was announced that AEW Women's World Champion Hikaru Shida would defend her title against Dr. Britt Baker, D.M.D. at Double or Nothing.

**********

Cody Rhodes (w/ Arn Anderson) defeated QT Marshall

The Factory joined for Marshall's entrance.

Cody attacked before the bell, hitting a relase suplex right away. He was about to whip Marshall with his weight belt, but the official threw it away. When Cody turned around, Marshall hit him with a belt of his own. The two had each other scouted, performing quick counters. Cody went to the top rope but was met by an underhook suplex and a German suplex, forcing Cody to regroup with Arn.

Marshall got in Arn's face and laid a hand on him, so Arn snapped with strikes. Arn was ejected from ringside for his actions, leading to a commercial break. Once back, Cody fired back with strikes, but they met each other on a double crossbody attempt. They exchanged right hands until Cody went for a sunset flip, where he partially pulled down Marshall's trunks and hit a DDT.

Cody went to the top rope and landed his high moonsault for two. He went for a Disaster Kick and a Cody Cutter but fell right into Cross Rhodes from Marshall for two. Marshall picked Cody up for a buckle bomb and set up for a Tombstone piledriver. The two rotated over in piledriver position until Cody finally hit one for two.

A dazed Marshall walked right into Cross Rhodes, but barely kicked out for a great near fall. Cody and Marshall exchanged a long look until Cody locked on the Figure Four, forcing Marshall to submit.

– Cody had been busted up at some point late in the match, bleeding all over from a cut below his eye.

Factory member Anthony Ogogo walked out and dropped Cody with a body shot before draping the United Kingdom flag over his body.

**********

The Ethan Page/Scorpio Sky/Darby Allin/Sting brawl from last week was recapped.

Sky and Page were interviewed by Marvez up on the balcony. I'm sure this will end well. Sky said he's the franchise now. Page said Sting was history and that Sting's face paint is covering up age and injury.

Allin appeared and attacked them both, diving off a structure during the attack, but Sky took Allin out with a trash can. Page and Sky then tossed Allin down some stairs. He took a nasty fall, that was one of the more brutal bumps I've seen in a long time.

They kept it picture-in-picture during a commercial break as an official checked on Allin.

**********

Dr. Britt Baker, D.M.D. (w/ Rebel) defeated Julia Hart

Baker taunted Hart right away. When Hart fought back, Baker dropped her with a Sling Blade. She got the glove from Rebel and hit Hart with an air raid crash. Baker went for the pin, but picked Hart up and applied the Lockjaw for the squash victory.

**********

A Taz video played where he analyzed film on Christian Cage. He pointed out flaws in Christian's game before hyping up Powerhouse Hobbs' work.

**********

Caster rapped before the match as usual. He said Pillman would be on Dark Side of the Ring in the future, referencing Pillman's late father.

AEW World Tag Team Championship #1 Contender Four-Way: SCU (Christopher Daniels & Frankie Kazarian) defeated Varsity Blonds (Griff Garrison & Brian Pillman Jr.), Jurassic Express (Jungle Boy & Luchasaurus) (w/ Marko Stunt), & The Acclaimed (Max Caster & Anthony Bowens)

This was two in, six out rules. The winners get a title shot next week.

Jungle Boy and Kazarian started off with a cradle exchange. We got some unwanted tags from opponents, leading to a complete brawl heading into a break. Once back, things had reset. Daniels and Bowens wrestled around before Luchasaurus forced his way in with a hard tag. The big man took out both of the Acclaimed with kicks and a suples before hitting a double chokeslam on the Varsity Blonds. He then chokeslammed Kazarian onto both Blonds on the floor.

Jurassic Express hit more double teams, but Daniels ran in to break up the pin. Pillman sprung in with a flying clothesline on Jungle Boy for two. Jungle Boy came out with his rebound lariat and went to the top but was pulled down by Daniels, who hit a Flatliner on Luchasaurus on the floor. Kazarian tagged himself in and rolled up Pillman for two.

Kazarian took out Jungle Boy but was rolled up by Pillman for a nice near fall. Pillman tried to follow it up but was stopped in his tracks and met with a BME from SCU for the win.

**********

A video package played hyping Jon Moxley vs. Yuji Nagata for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship. They got lots of NJPW footage and showed words from both Moxley and Nagata. Moxley was offended by being called a "punk." He said Nagata would learn that his mouth could get him in trouble. Once that bell rings, Moxley's got no respect for anyone.

**********

AEW Double or Nothing World Championship match announcement

Schiavone brought out Omega, who patronizingly hyped up the crowd for Blood & Guts. Omega talked about all the gold he's collected before moving to his next challenger for the AEW World Championship. Schiavone announced that PAC vs. Orange Cassidy would face off for the #1 contendership next week.

Omega pointed out that PAC had beaten him before, essentially saying it was a foregone conclusion that PAC would win. Orange walked out and Omega laughed in his face. Omega said he knows Orange's value to AEW in terms of cultural influence as a feel-good wrestler, but the fans couldn't be like Omega. Orange will never be championship material.

The topic moved to Orange's shades. Omega mocked Orange's Ray-Bans, taking them from him for wasting his time. He put them on Nakazawa and said he looks more like a champion than Orange before completely punking him out and walking off.

**********

Miro came out for an interview. He has a contract to face Darby Allin for the TNT Championship next week. If Allin can't perform after his attack, he loses by forfeit, but Miro doesn't want that. He wants to beat Allin. Next week, the world will find out what happens when the man who doesn't mind dying faces the man who doesn't mind killing him.

**********

Next week's Dynamite lineup:

Darby Allin (c) vs. Miro for the TNT Championship
AEW World Championship Eliminator: Orange Cassidy vs. PAC
Young Bucks (c) vs. SCU for the AEW World Tag Team Championships
Toni Schiavone interviews Jade Cargill
Cody Rhodes will make a Double Or Nothing announcement
Jon Moxley (c) vs. Yuji Nagata for the IWGP United States Championship

**********

The rules and cage structure are exactly like WarGames. Wrestlers will enter at five-minute intervals until all ten men are in the match –– at that point, the match officially starts. The match can only be won by submission or surrender. The Pinnacle has the advantage and will enter first.

Pinnacle were dressed in all white. Inner Circle were dressed in black prisoner outfits. Santana & Ortiz wore face paint.

BLOOD & GUTS: The Pinnacle (MJF, Wardlow, Dax Harwood, Cash Wheeler, & Shawn Spears) defeated Inner Circle (Chris Jericho, Jake Hager, Santana, Ortiz, & Sammy Guevara)

The crowd was crazy hot at the start of this one.

The first two in the match were Guevara and Harwood. Guevara immediately took the fight to Harwood with a dive over the ropes before the two wrestled around for an extended sequence. Harwood cut Guevara off with a spinebuster and called for a pinfall, but pins aren't counted until everyone has entered the match.

Guevara shoved Harwood into the corner buckle and the two climbed the side of the cage. They balanced on the top rope until a strike from Guevara sent Harwood crashing between the ropes and the cage.and sent him side to side into the chain link fence. Harwood was busted open. Guevara then hit a springboard cutter as Spears was the first entrant.

Spears brought in a chair. Guevara tried to fight him off but was planted with a spinebuster. Spears set up the chair in the corner as Guevara tried to fight back, but was overwhelmed by the numbers advantage. Spears domed him with a chair shot to the head.

The first Inner Circle entrant was Ortiz, who brought in a chair of his own. He ran wild on Harwood and Spears, taking out both men, before smacking them both with chair shots. Guevara and Spears met fon a springboard, but Ortiz took out Spears with a chair shot, allowing Guevara to hit a Spanish Fly. Guevara went for another springboard but fell off the ropes as he was busted open as well.

Cash Wheeler was next for the Pinnacle. As the fresher man he was able to take out Guevara and Ortiz as the Pinnacle regained control. FTR hit an assisted brainbuster on Ortiz as Spears tossed Guevara into the cage walls. Wheeler drove Ortiz into the cage right in front of Santana's face. Spears locked on a Sharpshooter as Wheeler hit a Gory Bomb into the cage wall, sending Ortiz between the cage wall and the ring apron.

Santana ran in as the next Inner Circle entrant. He planted Wheeler with a uranage and Harwood with a back suplex heading into a break. During the break, FTR flapjacked Santana into the cage wall, allowing the Pinnacle to take control once more. Wheeler was busted open.

Still under commercial break, Wardlow entered the match. The Inner Circle had dispatched the Pinnacle members already in the match and they tried to gang up on Wardlow, but the big man took them all out by himself. He tossed Guevara into the cage and powerbombed Ortiz into it as well.

Jake Hager evened the odds for the Inner Circle. He ran wild on everyone before applying an ankle lock on Spears, who frantically tapped, but the match wasn't over. The two big men, Hager and Wardlow, faced off. They had a strike exchange before Wardlow sent Hager into the chain. They each turned it around on each other up against the chain.

MJF was the last entrant for the Pinnacle as Spears hit a C4 on Guevara. The crowd was loudly anti-MJF. Wardlow took out Hager from behind, allowing MJF to just pose in the corner and taunt Jericho. At this point, the Pinnacle was firmly in control. They isolated Santana on one side of the ring.

Jericho entered the match and Blood & Guts officially began. The two teams faced off on either side of the structure, one team on each ring. They met in the middle and paired off with their respective match on the other team. Jericho brought out Floyd the bat and teed off on the Pinnacle. Spears tried to climb the cage to escape Jericho's attack, but Jericho pursued and choked him on the scaffolding ahead of a commercial.

During the break, the Pinnacle turned it around and started to dismantle one of the rings, exposing the wood planks. Back from break, FTR tried to piledrive Santana and Ortiz onto the exposed wood, but they turned it around and Guevara showed up to hit an assisted stuff piledriver (just like Tully would do for FTR).

Spears was hung upside down in the tree of woe as Ortiz set up a chair. Guevara hit a coast to coast dropkick through the chair into Spears. The left ring was completely dismantled as Jericho smacked MJF with a turnbuckle. Santana produced a fork of all things and stabbed at MJF with it. MJF was bleeding badly.

Jericho used his bat to choke out Wardlow and landed a clean closed fist right hand on MJF. Wardlow fired up and took out everyone in the Inner Circle, but was met with weapon shots. He tried to block an attack from Wardlow but ran into a chair shot to the head, leading to the final commercial break of the night.

During the break, Tully assaulted an official and unlocked the cage door, allowing MJF to climb out to the top of the structure. Jericho followed in hot pursuit as the Inner Circle maintained control in the ring. MJF pleaded with Jericho, who locked on the Walls of Jericho on the roof of the structure. MJF was about to tap, but landed a low blow, buying him a break.

MJF applied the Salt of the Earth. Jericho wouldn't tap, so MJF stomped and bit at the arm and locked it back on. MJF pulled out the Dynamite Diamond Ring and laid in a shot right between Jericho's eyes, demanding that Jericho surrender. Jericho was busted open. MJF looked to the floor like he would toss Jericho off the roof of the structure. He demanded that if the Inner Circle doesn't surrender, he's throwing Jericho off the top.

Guevara surrendered to save Jericho from being tossed off the top of the structure.

– After the match, MJF pushed Jericho off the top who went crashing through staging at ringside.

MJF screamed "thank you" and posed as officials checked on Jericho to end the show.

Good main event, but the payoff...MJF on top of the cage covered in blood is a cool visual, but Jericho being tossed should have been more like Sammy getting OWA'd during Stadium Stampede.

Sammy surrendering didn't make sense and was really lame.

Honestly that does make sense, what doesn't is the rest of the Pinnacle not surrendering or being in danger for about ten minutes when they were thoroughly beaten and defeated. Like there's no captains rule here, and hell JJ Dillon was the surrenderer in one of the first WarGames while the other team held everyone off to stop him from being saved because hes a weak coward.

not in the slightest. the show ending on sammy surrendering and mjf going 'ok' and both him and jericho climbing down calmly as the show closes would've been awful

all it really needed was for mjf to wait until the match was called, tell the rest of the IC 'thanks,' and immediately shove jericho off the cage instead of milking it like he did

Except I don't feel like this was a heel victory which i know "the bad guys won therefore heel victory" the inner circle were in no danger or pathos for the last 15 minutes of the match, they were dominating the wrestling and the entire Pinnacle was busted up and couldn't move. It feels more like no one won.

I know they're going to turn around and have The Pinnacle in crutched and bandages with MJF talking about their mighty victory but I'm left with "these men are so strong that none of them gave up even while beaten to a pulp" which is not the message I should be taking away from this match.

Both fair points. Let me rephrase. The ending felt "meh" versus any kind of definitive, even short-term definitive, and Jericho's landing just looked TOO soft, especially how he kept opening one eye to talk to the crew around him like "is the camera still on?"

The lead-up was great, and the visuals were great. It was the execution that left me cold. Better direction would have helped.
