Engels had a lot of weird and Problematic stuff going on that it still surprises me that the brainless chuds and vampire-funded think tanks all focus like a laser on Marx. Still mad at him for revealing the blueprints to the masses of the system they were trying to install as the natural order as ordained by God I guess, though they won out in the end in our corner of the world.

Trying to explain NFTs to Marx

He certainly would've been aware of the tulip mania so I doubt he'd be shocked. The urgent caution against ever letting middle men and rent seekers gain power in an economic system isn't a Marxist thing in origin though, that comes from both religious instruction since the beginning of recorded history as well as the earliest pro-Capitalism thinkers like Smith. The need to cut this warning out of economic thinking is why we have the Austrian and Chicago school types and their children who are even more clueless in charge of everything now.

Like yes Putin is ex-KGB, but not every commie cop is our good friend Raphael Ambrosius Cousteau and Putin's whole thing was that they should focus on making money instead of all this betterment of the human condition nonsense.

They're morons who take pride in just knowing stuff without thinking about anything, if you wanna get your head right you can't give them any space in it.

edit - they also aren't fans for the usual sort of reason you see people who fuckin' love genocide and cleansing campaigns still oppose this bodycount they thought up, that it was TRULY oppressive because it didn't allow megacorps to come in and run things on behalf of a ruling class of landlords. It does make one wonder why it was ever "abolished" in the first place. I assume it has something to do with industrialized workplaces causing a lot of injuries. If a worker gets his hand stuck in a metal press, just fire him and get a new one. If a slave gets his hand stuck in a metal press, he's gonna cost a fortune to replace. Ironically enough, this means slave owners have more incentive to protect the physical fitness of their laborers than employers do.

Well, in theory anyway.

Offloading keeping your workers alive to the state and thus taxpayer funds is probably very appealing to someone for whom the state has arranged it so they pay almost no taxes. As mentioned though it had to go as a primary economic mode because someone needs to buy all this poo poo. Financialization is the movement to move past people needing to buy things and it should come as no surprise that it only started gaining steam when we got a few generations removed from anybody being in charge who had any idea what was going on.

It's just a tool of analysis. It's useful in all kinds of contexts and can be used for evil as well as good. One of the main side effects of learning to think materially is that a lot of popular media is ruined for you if you can't just step back mentally and enjoy some schlock, especially video game writing. Magic and making things up. I think the current brand of copium is "basket of goods" which is an idealized form of the broader economic methodology of just adding and removing stuff from their analysis until they get the output they want

A more serious answer is that they believe value is created in the exchange of goods rather than their production and the state exists to iron out the contradictions this belief comes up against

In a lot of places "trot" also means "the ideology for old heads who are too tired anymore and don't want to give up the social conservatism stuff." Like you can have all the theoretical and historical basis in the world but that's just not how political identity works for most people.

truth. one thing I keep getting hit in the face with while reading leftist stuff now is just the overwhelming sense of "I could have learned this in school and they deliberately left it out." I don't mean the real commie stuff, obviously that wasn't gonna fly, but there are some basic ideas (and some basic facts!) that got omitted because they made socialism look less bad, or made capitalism/the US look less good. and if you don't go seeking that poo poo out, all the inertia in your brain is the junior high "oppression vs. freedom" patriotic bullshit masquerading as history or social studies

One thing I always think about whenever this sort of thing comes up was how in one of the book threads, when Grapes of Wrath came up, a goon mentioned that at their nice liberal arts prep school they were assigned to read it but were told they could skip the intercalary chapters lol. Apparently it's a not uncommon take among book sickos that they're just useless fluff which is wild to me.

Almost nobody you will ever talk to will understand or recognize any distinctions. If you want to be a lefty you can either be a shop burning property terrorist child or a Stalin kissing radical, which is fine, I'd absolutely give Stalin a little kiss, what an ice breaker at parties! This notion that what you call yourself matters is why most become electoralists despite not having a party that wants anything to do with them beyond their wallets. If you're trying to convince people you say you're an independent and hit on the themes but say none of the words people have been trained to shut down upon hearing. Being able to do this is why reading and understanding theory is important.

If you're consistent even a little and happy with grunt work behind the scenes every single socialist org has a place for you. If you've got spreadsheet and bureaucracy skills you'll be leadership in months in a lot of them, if that's your kind of thing. A treasurer you can trust and is a real believer is very nice to have around. Provided you aren't a cop or landlord or similar of course.

I personally find that people who have the ability to reflect on these things and come to the conclusion that they're not a super hero Protagonist and instead worry about how they'll be putting other people off end up doing just fine. Socialists tend to be a welcoming lot, not many people want anything to do with us.

No clue about his personal ideology or whatever, I assume it's just bog standard neoliberalism with a different background. I'm sure there's worse people around but if you're wanting to radicalize people versus making them a small bit unhappy with a small part of the status quo, I wouldn't think he's got much to offer. I wouldn't trust whatever some dumb app spits out. Just show it to some people among the intended audience, ask them what they think the gist of it is, and adjust as necessary. If that person thinks they can do one that is free of ableism or whatever tell them to go wild and see if their stuff's up to snuff, but if 99% of people who drafted it think it's fine and especially if it's time sensitive then calls for delays should be weighed against your responsibility to membership to not be a ramshackle org incapable of sending out even a simple memo or meeting minutes.

If the question is, "why didn't the rate of profit fall when the CRA went through and wages were raised?" I suppose my response would be "Did the median worker wage actually go up, and if so how much?"

Beyond that I'm having trouble grasping what you specific question or quandry is here, you seem to agree that the ROP drops and this is well supported, and explanations provided for why profit falling is as baked into Capitalism as profit seeking is, so I'm not sure what the missing piece here is.

Also as DGCF pointed out, a lot of the terminology and concepts Marx worked with were already in use by Smith and Ricardo, and would still be use regular use today if not for the post-WW2 consensus that materialism was to be stripped from all public and academic spaces. This is something that is abundantly clear in other ways like how fully financialized societies are incapable of interacting with the wider world in a coherent way, but it's also a whole different thing from this entirely I think.

I remember vividly a discussion I had with a guy where I asked him "and what do we do when we run out of oil?" to which he responded "God will fill the Earth with more for us to extract"

To this day it's been the best single sentence summary of the anti-materialist worldview, liberals obviously obfuscate it more than that but that's the root of it. It's why the rate will always fall and why when we hit serious scarcity it's going to be something no system is prepared to deal with beyond smashing the "Time For Fascism" button that is the shorthand for bourgeois democracy in crisis
