My 3090 and water cooled 10900k peaks at around 650 watts of usage running the 3dmark graphical tests and about 325 watts running the CPU intensive test. IIRC I've only had one PSU take a poo poo on me out of 20+ years of builds, I think it was a 1000 watt EVGA in like 2013.

Pretty much every Antec power supply I've owned took a poo poo on me within 2-3 years. Sometimes by the +5V rail floating around (Antec support swore up and down that wasn't possible, but the BSODs and my DMM said otherwise), but usually with random shutoffs (my TruePower went the longest like that... it'd shut off anywhere from once a month to several times in a day, under web browsing, gaming, etc... it would just randomly say gently caress you and turn off). An Enermax - which at the time, was considered a pretty decent power supply - took out the entire build. Brand new system, brand new PSU, it made a high pitched whine and let the magic smoke out... of the PSU and motherboard. RAM, CPU, motherboard, hard drive, all dead... and since it was all from Fry's, I had to return it all a little at a time. I'd powered it up with an old Antec PSU just fine to verify everything worked before finally dropping the Enermax in. randomidiot fucked around with this message at 20:53 on Jul 27, 2021 |

It's easily the closest-to-bleeding-edge PC I've ever owned and it's amazing, but it also still appears to be largely standards-compliant poo poo so I can still upgrade it piecemeal in the future if/when that day actually comes.

Inspired by bolind to do pizza Then my neighbor came round asking for a fuse, didn't have one that fit but that wasn't the problem, no idea what this is other than a mixer but figured out what's wrong (reassembled twisted and munged up the connecters for the vertical PCBs) and got it making noise again.

Seasonic makes the most reputable PSU's generally. They also make psu's for other brands too like Corsair. That doesn't mean ALL Corsair psu's are Seasonic, or that all Seasonic psu's are the best, but as a rule of thumb get a Seasonic, if not then try to get a Corsair manufactured by Seasonic. Outside of that advice it gets pretty hairy with regards to specific components and architecture and there's a lot of arguing over whether single rail or multiple rails is better and from there just devolves into the computer nerd equivalent of oil/battery chat.

The Enermax incident was a good 20 years ago, I have no idea who OEM'd them for Enermax. My particular Corsair is NOT a Seasonic (I believe it's Channel Well), but it's still trucking along just fine. Fan is noisy as hell for a few minutes if it's been off awhile... but at this point we're far into [h]ardforum territory.

I built myself what was a good but not bleeding edge PC about 6 or 7 years ago now and I'm still using it (still windows 7 lol). I haven't played games for about that long and mostly use it for browsing, watching videos, CAD and some arduino programming so it never even gets close to taxed. The only upgrades I've done to it over time are adding more storage and more RAM (mostly for editing really large photos).

I replaced the guts of the computer I had built about 8 years before that. On the latest build I used a big rear end hard drive, solid state boot drive and maxed out the ram at 32gb. It just worked out that as time went on I use it less and tbh it was just a posting box mostly anyway. It never needed to be good. Computer poo poo is so much easier than car poo poo. I think that's what made it kind of boring.

A lot of the Lain cases hold a ridiculous number of drives but they are only available for an extremely limited time and are all sold out Anyone have any recommendations? I hoard data and all 5 of the 3.5in bays in my cooler master case master 5 are full. I bought a 14tb ENT drive last week to replace the only 1TB drive I had in the computer so that should hold me over until the end of the year but I'm going to need to switch to a new case here pretty soon :/

Throw that poo poo on CL for free or whatever. I've had you-pull-it services pick up dead cars for free. Xposting from the rv thread and the ride repair thread. Spent the weekend in Portland while the truck got some time under the blue tipped wrench. If you all remember the airspring failure and the resulting axle shifting over from going jeeping with 6.5 tons of 4wd camper in the PNW. Found a shop (Oregon Spring Service)near Portland to solve this problem for me. Dropped it off on Thursday, picked it up this morning. Asked them to remove the airsprings and I'm gonna sell em on craigslist or whatever. The truck naturally fought them. They set the rears up, sat it back on the ground, and the truck looked no different than when it came in.... back up in the air it goes. They solved it by shimming the overload packs to engage sooner. Since the truck spent the weekend in the shop(they're closed then), the camper got no solar or shore power. The low voltage cutoff was triggered on Saturday which safely powered the inverter and all the 12V systems down preserving the battery array. There wasn't much in the fridge, the sourdough starter survived, little else did. The systems automatically came back up today when we picked the coach up and headed for the highway. Ride quality is ironically greatly improved. Cornering improved. I5 potholes and launch inducing ledges improved. dive under heavy braking, also improved. They also corrected the pinion angle for the double-cardan driveline built in 2018. I am over the moon with this work. I've not often paid a shop to fix stuff for me outside of the usual suspects. Given that I've no shop to build in, this was absolutely worth farming out. On Friday with the call of it putting up a fight, we'd considered hanging this up and renting an apartment locally. If the truck cant perform, we're gonna move on. They came through and were able to solve the saggy rear end issues. After all, The Romans used the same technology on their carts, not like there's a lot to go wrong here. The u-joint on the axle side is a bit growly, i'll install a new one asap, its a generic Neapco/Spicer 1350 series joint. Techspecs: New capacity is as follows: 9572lb spring cap up front on 8600lb of tire capacity 12,600lb out back on 8600lb of tire cap. There's room for future tire(MPT81s?)/wheel upgrades, etc. 3 leaves in the front with 11 out back. This truck is now more F450/550(lol F-superduty was the name of the era) than not. With a regear to 4.56/4.88 it'd be capable of pulling the motos in an enclosed trailer now which renders no need for a new F450/550. The excess front spring capacity allows some tricks with weight distributing hitches. Unloaded the rear is about 2" higher than loaded with the camper. I won't know what ride quality is empty as I don't really take the camper off. Its not a grocery getter therefore I don't care about unladen ride quality. I'm gonna pin the camper to stop it from sliding back by using wood screwed to the underside of the camper where the 5th wheel plate is. Following that....noise abatement for the turbodiesel. If anyone has some links for some *decent* yet attainable (fireproof)underhood and interior insulation, I'm all ears. Links from months ago are now dead.. Time of pick up. Fresh tank is about 50% as are both holding tanks.. Both fuel tanks +/- full. LP nearly empty. If this wall of words wasn't enough. Portland is kinda cool. I was pretty turned off about the area on arrival due to I5 drivers and the general attitudes southwest of the city. Listening to an unwell lady screaming for an hour and a half over lunch, did not help. (I don't sit well with loud sharp noises, especially for hours..). The people there are welcoming, kind, and not stand-offish. None of this "Your family hasn't lived here for 5 generations therefore you're poo poo" mentality like I've experienced elsewhere. The drivers and cyclists are courteous to one another. Not to mention the cycling infrastructure... quite a stark surprise compared to what I'm used to in the west. The light rail system is pretty great. Pro recs are the Portland Art Museum and the Portland Zoo. I'm not big on zoos because of how the creatures are typically treated, this is not one of those. The food? incredible. Absolutely incredible. Didn't get a chance to try some burritos, the Mediterranean joints kept me busy pretty much all weekend. Found a food truck with a lady that pretty much reminded me of my mother, which was funny and awesome. Hotel experiences were miss and miss. Lady walked into my room at 0630 this morning while I'm sleeping stark naked on the bed. I was also battling a gnarly 2 week old sinus infection thanks to the smoke and trees. The local "Zoom clinic" checked me out on zoom, had me come in, gave me a zpack and a fresh inhaler. Like the truck I'm doing better. I think I'm gonna come back here when the weather is poo poo. I'm beginning to loathe tldr: truck resprung, my sinuses broke again, spent the weekend in Portland. All got fixed. Portland cool.

STR posted:To be fair, a 1000 watt power supply isn't going to CONTINUOUSLY supply that. In fact, the chances of it actually supplying 1000 watts for more than a few seconds without going up in smoke are pretty slim unless it's a high end PSU (which it sounds like yours is, if it's platinum certified and a well known name brand, but I still wouldn't run it under that kind of load 24/7). People tend to assume computers do use more power than they do, but in reality running that CFL monitor from 10 years ago will actually consume more power. Unlike CPUs and GPUs that idle, they run full hog all the time. The 4k cheap Samsung monitors we've been deploying at work use just 20 or so watts, where as a old panels could easily pull over 100W. I got new wipers and put them on last night, and tried them this morning and they were terrible. Just spread the water around. So I decided to wipe them down hoping they just had some factory fresh poo poo on them that made them suck. And they did. For the first time in my life I had a set of wipers that came with plastic sheaths protecting the blades.

Just got back from a four day fishing trip in the Keys and it was amazing, my son said it was the best thing he's ever done in his life Stayed in a house boat right near a bridge connecting Big Pine Key and No Name Key. Lots of Tarpon, Sharks and Barracuda. On the last night I put a huge Pinfish on the hook thinking what the hell, gonna go for broke. After about five minutes I hooked a giant Tarpon and was crapping my pants as it pulled the drag out faster than any fish I've ever had on the line, and just about when I was thinking how in the hell am I going to land this thing he jumped about five feet out of the water and spit the hook out. Was kind of bummed but relieved at the same time cursedshitbox posted:None of this "Your family hasn't lived here for 5 generations therefore you're poo poo" mentality like I've experienced elsewhere. Lol Florida is a completely tourist driven state and if you can't accept that I don't know what to tell you bro. Maybe 30% of the people in the Keys right now actually live there.
