The ufc is very obviously protecting O'Malley. In fact, they're treating him the way that all prospects should be treated, but the fact that this is abnormal is the real story here. Imagine if Shabazyan had gotten a gimmie fight instead of Hermanson.

UFC 264: Breaking it down like an MMA fighter’s financial wellbeing I absolutely listened to Jack Slack’s breakdown before I wrote this one, so I’m not going to be able to avoid having his analysis seep in. Listen to his podcast – it’s pretty good. Main Card (PPV) Lightweight Main Event Dustin Poirier vs Conor McGregor Poirier is a pretty heavy favourite here among goons in this rubber match. Like 7 years ago, at featherweight, McGregor threw a hook around Poirier’s shell guard and got the KO en route to becoming Mystic Mac. A few months ago, Poirier chopped up McGregor’s leg and then countered his famous straight left with a right hook and put him right out. What will happen this time? Poirier is probably the more sophisticated striker now , and his growth since the first match is among the best in the sport, comparable only to current lightweight champ Charles Oliviera and middleweight top dog Robert Whittaker during that time. I’m leaning toward Poirier too, but Slack observed that McGregor has an opportunity to exploit a hole in Poirier’s shoulder roll/shell defense if he starts working body kicks like he did earlier in this career. Either way, lots of money being made on this fight. Welterweight Gilbert Burns vs Stephen Thompson Burns is coming off of the wrong end of a nearly flawless performance in his title shot against Kamaru Usman. Meanwhile, Thompson is easily the best guy who hasn’t yet faced Usman, even though his extremely slow matches against Woodley mean that he has a longer road to the title than most. I don’t like this match for Burns. He gets lots of credit for his highly improved striking, but he only outstruck Woodley and Maia, right? Woodley got outstruck by Colby loving Covington since then. And Thompson is absolutely the best striker in the division. Heck, he has a case for being the best striker in any division. Burns, however, still has his jiu jitsu, if he can get his takedowns going. Heavyweight Tai Tuivasa vs Greg Hardy Uhhh Greg Hardy failing upwards I guess? At least as far as his card billing goes? Hardy is a woman-beating ex NFLer who has more match-ending/ruining cheating than anyone I can think of in the entire history of the UFC. His last match had him gas out and lose by fat wrestling and ground and pound to Marcin Tybura. Tuivasa is a fat Aussie who drinks out of a shoe. He is mostly just a brawler. I think he’s coming off of a win? Idk his UFC record is around 0.500 with losses to people like Sergei Spivak. Not too much more to say here. Neither of these guys has any chance of ever winning a title. Bantamweight Irene Aldana vs Yana Kunitskaya This is probably closer to a title shot, sadly. Aldana is a decent Mexican boxer, with demonstrated KO power, but she got outworked by Holly Holm in a 5 round slog that cost me a prob bet on its entertainment value back in October. Kunitskaya has two consecutive wins against Ketelen Viera and Julija Stoliarenko. She’s supposedly a striker but she has shown a willingness to wall and stall her opponents. She’s also the highest ranked bantamweight who hasn’t fought Nunes. Bantamweight Sean O’Malley vs Kris Moutinho O’Malley is a smooth-striking skinny boy with glass bones. The UFC seems to think he’s the next big thing, but he needs to start winning fights instead of getting his rear end kicked and making his excuses. He was supposed to fight someone else but that guy got injured, so they brought in Moutinho – a guy making his UFC debut - as a last-minute replacement. I’m a fan of the tune-up fight, though, so it’s not all bad. This could very well produce a good highlight, or a memorable upset. Prelims ESPN/ESPN+ Welterweight Carlos Condit vs Max Griffin Condit is the former buzzsaw blood god WEC and Interim UFC champion. His fight with Robbie Lawler is one of the best in UFC history. He’s a high-activity kickboxer with a crazy guard… and no counter wrestling. But he has faded since his peak due to age and injury. Max Griffin is a mostly-forgettable journeyman who has been hovering around the bottom quartile of the division for ages. He has a punch, and he has a wrestle. He’s good enough to be a threat to Condit 2021, but I don’t think that he has anything for even a glimpse of the Condit of days past. Welterweight Niko Price vs Michel Pereira Ahhh now here’s the kind of nonsense that we’re here for. Niko Price is known for goofy rear end KOs. His most recent fight was a point-deduction draw vs Cowboy. That’s bad? Well Pereira managed to lose (by DQ) to Diego Sanchez recently. His last fight though was a good decision win over Khaos Williams, and before that an impressive scramble-RNC win over Zelim Imadaev. Both of these guys are pure chaos and weird poo poo is almost bound to happen. Ryan Hall vs Ilia Topuria Hall is an elite-elite grappler who nobody wants to fight, and when he rarely gets a fight booked someone gets injured. It’s a treat just to have him back in the cage. The pressure is on, and he has very little to gain with a lot to lose against the dangerous Topuria, who doesn’t even have a Wikipedia page to go with his two UFC wins over competent opposition. He’s a Spanish-Georigan grappler and he’s highly regarded if relatively unknown. Oh, and both of these guys are undefeated, so that’s fun. Middleweight Driscus du Plessis vs Trevin Giles Du Plessis is a South African who won his UFC debut by KOing Markus Perez (the joker makeup guy) in 1 round in October. Trevin Giles is a middling middleweight wrestleboxer whose best win is against James Krause on extremely short notice with Krause moving up a weight class. That’s a good fight! Anyway he’s on a 3-fight streak now, with Roman Dolidze being his most recent. Gonna be some punches flying in this fight, too. Early Prelims ESPN+/Fight Pass Flyweight Jennifer Maia vs Jessica Eye Oh god why. The battle of women who lost to Valentina. Maia is a BJJ fighter with no striking to speak of, and who is renowned for missing weight, split decisions and never finishing anyone except Joanne Calderwood. Jessica Eye is best known for being like the only person who Valentina has ever KOed despite her reputation as a knockout artist. Eye has been in some fun fights, but only when she has a dance partner who pushes her, and that ain’t Maia. I’ll try to remember to keep this feature going in my breakdowns: this is the fight to skip if you need to get melty cheese / weed / booze / porn. In fact, I’ll revive my prob bet from the Irene Aldana fight: If someone misses this fight because of this disclaimer and it ends up earning a performance bonus, I’ll eat a 24h prob with the worst thirst trap picture of Jessica Eye that anyone can find. Middleweight Omari Akhmedov vs Brad Tavares Akhmedov is one of those Dagestani dudes who looks like he’s a million years older than he actually is. He’s a wrestley Dagestani guy. He’s also like the only opponent who Chris Weidman has beaten in the last forever. His last time out he embarrassed Tom Breese. Brad Tavares is a very well rounded gatekeeper journeyman. This is a decent fight, though it’s more of a fight-night midcarder in my mind than it is a PPV undercard. Flyweight Zhalgas Zhumagulov vs Jerome Rivera Zhumagulov is a Kazakh Fight Nights global veteran with an 0-2 UFC record vs guys who I don’t know. Rivera is a 0-3 UFC contender series product who is probably getting paid in the UFC’s new cryptocurrency, though at least two of his losses are to Figgy Smaller and Tyson Nam. Middleweight Alen Amedovski vs Yaozong Hu Who? Yaozong is a Chinese fighter with a 3-2 record and a 0-2 UFC record since 2017 against frankly bad opposition. Amedovski is a (North) Macedonian fighter based in Italy with a 0-2 UFC record, including a 14 second KO loss to a brawler who got stomped by Khamzat and who has a 1-5 UFC record. Yeesh. This simply should not be on a UFC card.

brian posted:yay ryan hall finally gets a fight It has happened twice. The first time his opponent, Andre Soukhamthath, was too oblivious to notice that he had broken O'Malley's leg and instead went for a takedown. Against nearly any other opponent, the outcome of the Vera fight would have repeated. This means that his leg has broken in a full third of his UFC fights. And he made enough excuses after the Vera fight to shame a Gracie. I'm not going to let him off the hook for that as a whole, particularly because he's getting the full hype train/media treatment. If a fighter is going to stand in the spotlight where we can see them clearly, I'm going to call out what I see. Somehow I forgot about the Thomas Almeida fight. Herb could get work elsewhere and just miss out on an international flight or two. drat. I don't care about him as a fighter much, but to lose a fight between top-15 fighters should never result in a cut. Like, the UFC should informally have to tiers of fighters, poo poo maybe even explictly, the way that euro football leagues function, and non-contract expiration cuts should happen only from the lower tier. In a case like this, ok, so he went 1-2 against Chris Weidman, Tom Breese, and Brad Tavares. Throw him against, idk, Jun Yon Park, and if he loses that to go LWLL, fine, cut him. But the UFC needs those gatekeeper fighters who people vaguely recognize, especially in 185+. A guy who is 9-5-1 is a resource in limited supply, and who can serve to build a fighter much more effectively than a guy who is 2-3. Yet another problem with UFC matchmaking. Now that I think about it, he and Tavares should have never been matched up against each other anyway. When a dude passes 10 UFC fights with a ~.600 record he should be exclusively fighting opponents who are like 3-0 4-0 5-1 5-2. Like, why didn't Akhmedov fight Shahbazyan instead? That would be an excellent fight, right now from a talent development perspective, a prospect showcase perspective, and a rankings justification perspective. Remember when Jon Jones beat up Stefan Bonnar, Brandon Vera, and Vladmir Matyushenko? It made people notice because we were able to say "drat Jones beat up a guy who I kinda know he might be kinda good"

Uggghhhh I don’t wanna. But I will, because this is the exact kind of card that these posts are good for. So I’m going to break down Fight Night: Makachev vs Moises. Again, I listened to Jack Slack already this week, so I won’t be able to avoid having his analysis seep in, instead of the reverse, which is what usually happens Mr. Slack who I know is reading this because he’s secretly a goon. All of this will be on ESPN/ESPN+ Main Card Lightweight Islam Makhachev vs Thiago Moises This is a lightweight Coming of Age story. Unfortunately, it should have happened on last week’s PPV where people would actually get to see the fighters, instead of on a card where nobody will. Though now they get a 5 round fight. This fight is an argument for making the prelim headliners 5 rounds. Do it, Dana. And pay me money for the idea and to be the UFC matchmaker. And quit your job and go away forever. See? I can’t even stay on topic with this card. Makhachev is Khabib’s protégé and dietician. He’s like Khabib with a bit better striking, and a bit worse grappling. He has one career loss, getting clipped by Adriano Martins, who is a forgettable Brazilian kickboxer who actually can hit, so it’s essentially a puncher’s chance loss. His last fight he completely smeshed Drew Dober. Thiago Moises is the opposite of Drew Dober: a Brazilian who can grapple. His best UFC win is probably a cool achilles lock win over Michael Johnson, but he has beaten Bobby Green and Alexander Hernandez since then. Bantamweight Marion Reneau vs Miesha Tate mom fight mom fight Mom Fight Mom Fight MOM FIGHT MOM FIGHT! Actually it’s not that exciting. Reneau is at 44 the oldest woman ever to fight in the UFC at 44. She’s a gym teacher who has some decent wins in a long career but who is also on a 4 fight losing streak. She has never been finished. She mostly rassles and punches at people. Miesha Tate is only 34, but I think that still makes this the oldest women’s fight in UFC history. She’s the former champ and a major pioneer of the division, but she was also retired for 5 years doing ??? for ONE. She was mostly a wrestler too. Lightweight Jeremy Stephens vs Mateusz Gamrot Stephens is the most overrated KO artist in the game, because they call him that but he has like 6 finishes in 30 UFC fights. Last time out he didn’t even get out because he assaulted and injured his opponent at the weigh in. OH WELL. He’s on like a 5 fight winless streak. I really don’t hate him that much, but they should just permanently move him to #16 in the rankings and change his nickname to “The Gatekeeper.” Gamrot is a polish prospect who is 1-1 in the UFC. He TKOed Scott Holtzman in his last fight. Oh, he went 7 minutes against Garry Tonon at ADCC so he’s probably going to choke Stephens out unless he does something stupid and gets punched. Acually, Stephens is a competent counter wrestler. It’s almost as if this fight represents some kind of test and barrier to Gamrot’s future advancement in the division Middleweight Rodolfo Vieria vs Dustin Stolzfus Viera is the greatest jiu jitsu guy ever. Or something. He also gassed like a chump in his last fight and got choked out by a purple belt. Stolzfus (I can’t type his name correctly even if I’m looking at it) is a DWCS guy who lost his debut to Kyle Daukaus. His record says “Grappler,” so this is probably an alley-oop for Vieria but maybe he’ll snatch defeat from the jaws of victory again. Yeesh. Gabriel Benitez vs Billy Quarantillo This fight should fukken rock. Benitez is a Mexican brawler from AKA who is said (by his coaches) to be p4p one of the hardest kickers in the sport, recently KOing Justin Jaynes in December. Billy Quarantillo is a good wrestler who has been in some fun as poo poo fights, too, coming off his first UFC loss, to Gavin Tucker. Prelims Welterweight Daniel Rodriguez vs Preston Parsons Why isn’t Rodriguez getting a spotlight? He has wins over Mike Perry, Tim Means, and others. He’s a scary looking dude who punches people. Is there some other guy who looks like him, though, who has been also on a tear? Preston Parsons is a debuting late replacement with lots of strangles on his record, and an early career loss to Mike Perry. Strawweight Amanda Lemos vs Montserrat “Conejo” Ruiz Big Tatty Goth Girlfriend is back. Ruiz is a Mexican wrestler who won her last fight by scarf holding her opponent for 3 rounds and then getting into a yelling match afterwards. It owned. Before that she was lined up for an Invicta title shot. She has finished several fights from scarf, actually. Lemos is a Brazilian who is on a 3-fight streak, including a decision over Mizuki and a KO of Livinha Souza, which was pretty sweet actually. This might be good, or at least funny. Bantamweight Khalid Taha vs Sergey Morozov ??? Taha is German and his only UFC win is a KO of Boston Salmon. Morozov is Kazakhstani and his only UFC bout is a loss to Umar Nurmagomedov, who is an undefeated uber prospect. Bantamweight Miles Johns vs Anderson Dos Santos ??? Johns is a 11-1 / 2-1 UFC DWCS guy whose most recent win was a POTN KO of Kevin Natividad. Dos Santos is a 21-8 / 1-2 Brazilian with a loss to a guy named Nad Flyweight Francisco Figueirdo vs Malcolm Gordon Figgy “Thong Song” Smallser is Deivison’s younger brother. He’s 1-0 in the UFC with a decision win over Jerome Rivera, who we saw get his head twisted off last weekend. Gordon is a Canadian TKO guy, 0-2 UFC Heavyweight Alan Baudot vs Rodrigo Nascimento Nascimento is a DWCS guy who got KOed by Chris Daukaus in 45 seconds. Baudot is a French/Canadian (not French-Canadian) TKO guy who got into the UFC as a late replacement off of some strange DQ win and then got beaten up by Tom Aspinall.

He also has, by a significant margin, the most losses in UFC history so if he doesn't knock out Gamrot maybe he can pad his all-time record Yeah that's probably a big part of why he gets called a KO artist. His big KOs are cool, but like, there actually aren't that many of them. I just counted: 7 finishes in all of those fights.

Dillashaw vs Sandhagen Fight night breakdown We have a few things to discuss here I guess. There is an extremely good chance that this card contains a fight on it that 3-4 years from now we’ll be saying “remember when they fought before they were both top-5 fighters?” like Poirier-Holloway, Holloway-McGregor, or Alves-Fitch. Main Event (ESPN/+) Bantamweight TJ Dillashaw vs Cory Sandhagen According to the promos this is TJ’s heroic comeback after being bullied by the media and USADA for failing a drug test. Redemption story! The reality is that noted cheating drug cheater (and two-time former bantamweight champion) TJ Dillashaw is returning after a honking big suspension after he tried cutting down to 125 lb to cHaMpChAmP etc bullshit and got KOed by Henry Cejudo and then was exposed as a cheating drug cheat and stripped of his belt. For those of you who are new around here, he’s a wrestler who learned a high-activity footwork based kickboxing style. He zigs and zags and shifts and bonks dudes and occasionally throws big head kicks. Cory Sandhagen is that on amphetamines, which even though I’m using them figuratively, are incidentally a lesser PED than the poo poo TJ was busted using. He throws crazy kicks and jumping knees and poo poo. He’s coming off of a really quite scary extremely quick first-round KO of Frankie Edgar. The winner of this will probably be next in line for a title shot at bantamweight, whether that’s vs Champ Aljamain Sterling, or an interim shot vs Petr Yan. Bantamweight Aspen Ladd vs Macy Chiasson Ladd is a crushing top-game wrestler who screams a lot and misses weight. She really should be a featherweight. She wins most of her fights, but she was on the losing end of one of the fastest KOs in a UFC women’s fight. Her last fight was in 2019, a 3rd round TKO of Yana Kunitskaya (who lost recently). Macy Chiasson is a prospect from the FW TUF who is on a two-fight streak, recently beating Marion Reneau (who lost a lot recently and retired). She’s a punch lady but she hasn’t finished anyone since 2019. Bantamweight Kyler Phillips vs Raulian Paiva Kyler is a one of the top prospects in any division right now. This is his 4th UFC fight, and in the last one he took a decision over highly-regarded Song Yadong. He’s a well-rounded guy with sharp striking. He was supposed to fight Assuncao, so that should tell you how he’s regarded. Paiva is the replacement. He’s a DWCS guy who moving up from flyweight after missing weight heroically and taking a decision over Zhumagulov (who twisted a dude’s head off a couple weeks ago). He’s 2-2 in the UFC, and a serious underdog here. Featherweight Darren Elkins vs Darrick Minner It’s a midwestern barn burner! THE DAMAGE is a classic Indiana corn-fed wrestle-brawler with no sense of self preservation. He is not going to have a high quality of life after MMA. Anyway, his fights tend to be fun because of that. He was once a top dude but a four-fight losing streak ended that, but he turned it around in November with a submission of some dude. Meanwhile Nebraskan Minner is on a two fight streak now with wins over Charles Rosa and a big upset of TJ Laramie. I think he’s mostly a journeyman submission grappler, in that Nebraska/Iowa tradition of being 31 with nearly 40 fights. Flyweight Miranda Maverick vs Maycee Barber Barber is a DWCS super-prospect who lost to Roxy in one of the biggest upsets in recent history, and then lost a close decision to Alexa Grasso after recovering from the knee injury that took her out of the Roxy fight. Miranda Maverick is a real prospect who fought up through Invicta, having won a Phoenix Series tournament over there. She’s young, she’s cool, she’s smart, and she beats the poo poo out of people. Her most recent appearance was a decision over Gillian Robertson (who Barber TKOed). I’m a fan. Welterweight Mickey Gall vs Jordan Williams Gall got into the UFC with like no fights because they thought CM Punk had enough of a chance of beating him to at least book the fight. Since then he has bopped around mostly trading wins and losses to actually stay somewhat legitimate. He’s a grappler. In his last fight he got out grappled by … uhh… Mike Perry. Jordan Williams is a DWCS guy with a 0-1 record. He’s pretty anonymous. Why is this main card? Prelims also ESPN/+ Middleweight Punahele Soriano vs Brendan Allen Soriano is another prospect: he’s a DWCS guy who is now 2-0 in the UFC with two first-round KOs. Allen is his first step into “known quantity” territory. Allen is a once-prospect who is now in that second chapter of his UFC run. He had a good winning streak going including wins over Tom Breese, Kyle Daukaus, and Kevin Holland, but he got derailed by Sean Strickland and bounced back with a heel hook vs Karl Roberson (which was sweet). This is a good test for both: a nice competitive bout between young, aggressive fighters. Middleweight Nassourdine Imavov vs Ian Heinish Imavov is French and 1-1 in the UFC with a decision over Jordan Williams (above) and a majority decision loss to surging Phil Hawes (that was a good fight). Heinish has been bounced back down after a loss in a high profile fight against Gastelum. He’s a good wrestler, with good hands (i.e. a competent wrestleboxer) with good athleticism and a jailhouse spirit, but he hasn’t assembled all of the parts yet to prove that he is an elite fighter. If he’s still ranked, this is forcing him to defend that ranking. Not an extremely good fight, but a reasonable booking. Bantamweight Adrien Yanez vs Randy Costa Shti this is prospect night, isn’t it? Yanez is another elite prospect who we’ve been watching develop over this year and last. He came in on DWCs, and has scored two impressive finishes to follow it up. Randy Costa is a 6-1 American on a 2-fight streak against Journey Newson and Boston Salmon, both finishes as well. Bantamrweight Julio Arce vs Andre Ewell Arce moves down I guess. He’s an ok guy with a 3-2 UFC record, including a win over Dan Ige. He has two split decision losses, but I guess he wants to move down in weight or something. Whatever. Andre Ewell is in a similar spot. His last fight was a decision to Gutierrez, and he has mixed some wins and losses to middle-of-the-road competition. His best opponent is probably Marlon Vera. Flyweight Sijara Eubanks vs Elise Reed I’m amazed that Sarj is still here. She’s on a two-fight skid with losses to Pannie Kianzad and Ketelen Viera. She has excellent BJJ and terrible fight IQ. Note that this is at 125! She did well there on TUF but then missed weight and lost a title shot because of it. If you are a prop bet person maybe that’s one to pick. It’s do or die for her. Reed is the CFFC flyweight champion and she’s a good wrestler and a competent fighter overall. She absolutely can beat the usual Eubanks, but I don’t think she can beat the good version of Eubanks that shows up now and again. Strawweight Diana Belbita vs Hannah Goldy Hannah Goldy is a “prospect” with a reportedly lucrative OnlyFans. She had three consecutive fights cancelled, and hasn’t fought since a 2019 loss to Miranda Granger. Her previous fights have all been at 125. Likeweise for Belbita. She’s Romanian and 0-2 in the UFC against mediocre opponents. This is probably an alley-oop for Goldy.

Marching Powder posted:i don't remember him getting stung in the first one, but i do remember being completely unsurprised when tj did the exact same thing in the rematch only slightly faster and landing the only - no poo poo, i counted - ~38 punch combination i have ever seen Yeah the tub. I'm 90% sure that TJ smoked him with a straight punch in the first round of the first fight ,and it was hard enough that Barao was visibly rattled after that.

On the other hand it was funny and good that after Hector Lombard got a technicality TKO win against Joe Riggs at a bareknuckle bout last month, that some other dude got into Hector's face in the post-fight interview, causing Hector to deck him and forcing Joe Riggs to break up the fight between his opponent and some other random dude. Hector may be a piece of mush-brained garbage, but he's still generating entertainment value for us.

Brut posted:If you're kneeling in front of your opponent and their limbs are free enough that they can choose to punch or kick you in the head, and just one of those happens to be against the rules, you're losing the fight pretty bad. This and the Eddie Alvarez dq led me to my unpopular theory that remaining in a position like that, where you're basically offering illegal strikes and you're only being protected by the rules, should count as grounds for TKO. I still believe it, but I don't post about it. Much.
