I think the problem has always been the internet connectivity of both your source computer and the steam link provider. Specifically, the best way to do it was connect it directly via an Ethernet port which for most people is the same as simply plugging in an HDMI.

It’s good in a pinch and for casual gaming though! And the steam deck will further improve/iterate on that (probably). I used to have zero problem doing dungeons and stuff in FF14 via steamlink over a 100MB Wi-Fi connection

I am very excited to buy and use my cute little emulation machine that can also run some other video games while I’m on an airplane.

I’d like to buy a dock for my 4K TV with a USB out, though, so I can use it on my TV. Are there any solid options out there?

Also, how does everyone do cloud saving for emulators? Just map a folder in OneDrive?

I regrettably remembered Space Chem existed

I'm a fan in general of how easy they made it to rebind things on the fly, but I wish there was some more immediately-visible documentation about the nuances of stuff like "adding additional commands" vs "adding sub commands"

Even now I'm not too sure how to properly do something simple-on-paper like binding a button to "Hold down shift, press 1, let go of shift, let go of 1"

FFXI is extremely weird because you’re not allowed to minimize natively so you might need to download Windower. The reason I ask is because, unlike other games, FFXI kind of kicks your computer down and I don’t know how well that plays with SteamOS

Everyone with the deck for emulation: does it ever get hot/loud/low battery? Especially in fast forward mode or whatever?

I ask because my old Mac used to get hot if I ran pokemon at 4x speed

jokes
Dec 20, 2012

I was concerned that it wouldn’t be optimized for emulators and it would cause the fans to get loud or tax the processor too much.

I don’t imagine valve is doing a lot of work on behalf of emulators, so I assume that falls on the emulator community which I don’t think has much resources. The capability of the hardware is hard to peg in relation to hardware elsewhere, like is it similar to an 8700 and a 1060 or something?

People say “it can run elden ring I’m sure it can run an emulator fine” but you’d be surprised. Also, being extremely optimized for a blockbuster AAA game doesn’t really translate to being able to play GameCube games at upscale resolutions at turbo speed or whatever.

I love my Deck, but it sure doesn't feel as durable as the iPhones, MBPs, or ThinkPads I've had in the past.

I'm hoping that I never drop it unless it's from a couple of feet up onto carpet.

If you drop it that means you’re not playing cool video games on a cool device and you deserve any bad things that come from that

What? They won’t make a steam deck 2?

Based on what?

They have pre-orders still outstanding to the end of the year. Reviews are extremely positive, Gaben said he was surprised people were willing to spend more money on a more premium version/product, and they are still doing really great and encouraging updates. They partnered with ifixit for repairs and replacement parts where, of course, all the parts are sold out.

In every situation demand for their product has exceedingly outstripped supply, for a year plus. Their Steam Link and Steam Controller were sold and supported for about a thousand years beyond their useful life. And to top it all off, with more juice and support these stupid things could straight up replace most gaming pcs and gaming laptops.

In what universe does that translate to “nope, they’re done”. Steam OS doesn’t seem like a real moneymaker compared to the Deck, which is lightning in a bottle that the internet has been clamoring for for years after the switch came out.

I feel like it’s an easier sell to have people rely on the Steam devices than on Steam OS because there are reasons to have computers that aren’t video games, and Steam OS doesn’t double as “video games OS” and “porn/work OS” like Windows.
