I do think that where someone is possibly just suffering from online teen lad brain and downloading stupid poo poo, reading some of say Steve Biko, Emma Goldman, and Theodor Adorno in the company of a group to put it into context could prove good rehabilitation, or at least remove their "I'm a tortured genius and uniquely persecuted" head out of their rear end, as long as it was standardized rather than just for Anglo failsons. I'm not convinced that doing a book report on Far from the Madding Crowd would do the same.

I'd like to think that 'public' means the tabloids and most ordinary people have a few more pressing issues than that, and there's (as usual) nothing at all in the flag protocol* that specifies 10 minutes, it's as soon as can be done from the announcement, but if it's that big a problem just stick one of these on it like

I thought the whole point of a codeword, even if everyone knows what it is, was to give everyone time to prepare.

Like "big bridge fell over 😢" gets whatsapped out to everyone and then they have some time to stop doing lines in the toilets and pick someone to send up to the roof, so that by the time someone (I assume in a delightfully unusual uniform and hat) strides to the palace gates to announce "The Queen is Dead" there's someone already in place.

I'm sure someone will manage to balls it up somewhere though, even with all the 10 minutes and flag widths and that being matters of convention.

That's the worst part of it. There is a tiny minority that tries to destroy all nuance and discourse around sex, gender, reproductive rights, fertility, women's health, and access to medicine and it's not trans people or nonbinary people, nor is it a sectarian matter, nor is it Thomas Cromwell or whoever (mostly on account of him dying in 1540), it's a bunch of hyperreactionary theocrat nutjobs from across the Conservative Catholic and Southern Baptist and white Evangelical communities and people that don't care either way about women but hate the idea of anyone having healthcare without them making a profit. And some people who are both and called Jacob Rees-Mogg. But apparently it's more important and relevant to use your pulpit to mention that a wealthy author got dunked on repeatedly on the internet for writing utter shite last year than it is that actual sex based rights (not dogwhistly ones) are under attack from those groups right now.

Not that this applies to any poster here - A huge problem I’ve always had with the respect is earned mentality is that right wingers use it as an excuse to be absolutely horrible to kids. “I’ll trust you if you prove you can be trusted” and all that poo poo.
I think the issue is that there's three completely different types of respect, respect as a human being, which people should have by default unless they do something atrocious (and even then there's some inalienable rights), respect as an equal, like "I trust every member of my team to treat this as seriously as I do" which requires a level of common trust that everyone is on a similar page, and respect as an authority, like "we show respect to the judge by standing."

And right wingers love muddying those to say things like "if you respect me, I'll respect you" when they mean "for me to respect you as a human being, you need to first respect me as an authority."

The monarch is very carefully presented as having no temporal power, regardless of reality, so it's all just flag waving and cheers. I suspect that'll change rapidly if Charles takes a more active role.

People love the appearance of anti-authority, Boris Johnson, the language of brexit, having enough of experts, but any genuine threat to authority gets snubbed out.
