CERN could definitely get funding if they open a restaurant that serves food synthesised entirely on site from subatomic particles.

As a CERN restaurant regular I can tell you that they already do. Unfortunately they only use bosons that carry no flavour.

Anyone here in UCU? It looks like we're in for a fun ride this year.

Yep really excited to have to do it all again at my stupid lib university where nobody wants to go on strike because "I only agree with two of the five demands so I won't strike at all" or "I don't like conflict" or "I make enough money so it's wrong to strike about pensions" or "I don't like not working" or "the leadership's messaging is too extreme". Honestly these people are still convinced that data and education change things despite living through the past decade.

Comrades on the picket make it all better, and knowing other universities' staff aren't so uniformly obstinate helps.

Solidarity. I'm in a fairly similar boat in that my department is 80% people with similar excuses, but the 20% that do picket are great people to be out there with. It's proper poo poo to have to start and end* the pandemic with industrial action but them's the breaks and the pension offer on the table is awful.

e: ^^^ yeah, and it's a real poo poo tactic to keep making the unions reballot until the threshold drops to nothing. I don't see that happening tbh but each time it gets harder to convince people.

I do wonder if that's why UUK were happy to accept the USS position here, gambling that everyone is desperately wanting a return to some kind of regular schedule instead of further uncertainty.

Please do- I don't know much about the various 'lefty' factions in lab these days but using 'against the witch hunt' as a name sounded dodgy to begin with. That's one of the things I reckon that gets the melts riled up- the genuine, good faith lefties have had a lot of success by just being progressive and offering a positive vision rather than amplifying the talking points the right want to attack on.

I'm in the same boat, lead-pipe wise. It's copper from the basement onwards but in the basement it's just rammed into a lead pipe that disappears off into a wall out to the main. It looks like a right bastard to get replaced which is presumably why the previous occupants didn't get it done, and united utilities look a bit poo poo on how they'll handle it according to their website. No info on sending someone out to test it, and they're really explicit they'll only cover the connection from the main to the property line.

Thanks for the info though- I've ordered one of those test kits to see how much lead is actually coming out of the taps.

amazing. I'm on one of those energy flipping companies that checks your tarrif and automatically switches you. Couple of days ago they tried switching me from green to avro. avro went tits up so they kept me on green. now green has gone tits up. To top it off, the tarrif flipping company has also gone bust lol. Free market efficiency in action.
