The beware idol seems hugely glitchy. If Xander has to say that thing about the butterflies more than once, that's just stupid. If someone on another beach never finds their idol and he can never vote again, that's just completely broken.

There could be some aspect to it we aren't aware of like it's gone once a merge happens or something, but yeah, it feels like "gimmicks for the sake of gimmicks" territory that wasn't thought out.

That was a genuinely awful episode of Survivor.

An awful episode for an awful season so far.

They've also descended way too far into the wild overproduction that runs rampant in reality shows and which they've largely been able to distance from, until now.

The prisoners’ dilemma, except they're in the same cell and can freely discuss their thought process before making a decision.

So much cringe with Jeff cheering on the losing tribe and calling it the most inspiring physical effort he's ever seen or whatever the hell he said. Why they continue to lean into the overproduction baffles me.

Anyone remember Survivor? That was a fun show.

You mean you don't enjoy the evolution into "Survivor: Unnecessarily Complex, Overwrought, and Confusing"?

Jeff's ego over all is basically the theme of this season. Every twist is talked about like something he came up with personally like he's the corporate sponsor they have to name drop constantly which is giving me terrible Treasure Hunters flashbacks because that's not how people talk and you don't even have a big money sponsor to keep happy.

His ego is all over essentially every terrible direction the show has taken: the same location over and over, Edge of Extinction, the final fire-making showdown, and all of the stupid gimmicks (no more jury questions, trying to appeal to the little kids, the overdone attempts to make everything a tearjerking, heartwarming moment). When he finally deigns to comment on the backlash, it's with a sense of such superiority and bewilderment that there could ever be anyone who doesn't love it. He is (was) a great host, but he's proven that he went mad with power and that there's no one to keep him in check and tell him that his ideas suck.

Very glad that they included Danny's very politely worded "gently caress this twist, since when does winning immunity not grant immunity" comment.

Honestly its kind of a minor miracle Cook Islands was as good as it was. There’s probably another timeline where it goes poorly and Survivor gets literally canceled.

The other alternate timeline is Fiji which was supposed to be divided by race but the contestant dropping out at the last minute negated it.

Liana’s misfire has to be a top 10 dumbest all time move, right? She knew Xander knew about it, and she saw Xander parading his “idol” in front of her, and she didn’t need to use her advantage... yet she didn’t think “hey, maybe this is a set up?” 🤔

When combined with her smug arrogance leading up to it, certainly.

I can actually understand Shan's reaction to the papaya thing even though I think it's kinda silly, partially because I can 100% see myself having the same kind of reaction in the situation they were in.

Yeah, it's easy for us to armchair quarterback, but being without food, and all the stress of the game and situation, I'd totally snap from some seemingly innocuous thing like that in her situation too.

Sometimes you will be wrong for taking the greater odds, sometimes you will be right, particularly when you only get one chance. Plus, in the back of my mind, I'd always be like "okay, obviously production knows about this common trivia thing like I do, so maybe they're deliberately doing the opposite of the right thing, since that would be more dramatic probably... but what if production knew I'd know it and think that and they play it straight and that'd be dramatic in it's own way..." and poo poo, at some point you may as well give yourself permission to be an airhead, see the odds at 50/50 win/lose :v and just pick one arbitrarily, rationalize why you chose later.

I view it sort of like playing blackjack at a casino. You'll get the players at the table who are upset that you hit when the book says you're not supposed to, and/or "took their card" or something like that. Yes, maybe it was the incorrect decision from the perspective of mathematical probabilities, but there are no guarantees and going against the odds sometimes works and sometimes doesn't.

So what Coach or Philip would have done if they'd admitted their persona was a gimmick in order to deceive everyone and get dragged to the finals only for the master reveal.

I was told that S1 of Australia isn't even that great compared to some of the others and I found it significantly better than any modern US iteration. So annoyed that I can't progress to the next season now.

My prediction: Probst heard how everyone was calling Aus Survivor better than US and he called CBS offices and went on a tantrum, so they removed it.

For as defensive he gets when there's negative commentary on changes he's made to the show, this is really not all that far fetched to me.
