Xaris posted:reposting now (optimistic) Paolo Bacigalupi's A Full Life https://www.technologyreview.com/2019/04/24/135741/a-full-life/ quote:By the time Rue reached 15 she had begun to measure her life by her many moves, the parchment of her life torn into fragments, each one reducing the integrity of the whole. Each small leaf then folded. Folded and shaped until it became surreal origami. Tear here. Fold there. This part became a house, burning down. Tear here, fold again. This shred became a rusty diesel truck, driving south. Tear again. Fold. This bit became an apartment building, without a roof.

gonna re-recommend oryx and crake if you want to read a feelgood story where someone actually does something to stop humanity from doing even more damage to the environment although the book's a bit outdated, the neat thing about it is the solutions presented in it are totally viable with available technology, unlike silly sci fi poo poo like ccs on a mass scale

Conspiratiorist posted:Was that his point? I got an hour and a half in and he never made one beyond "nothing you do matters", which I should add stands rather hypocritically at odds with his constant insinuations that you should refrain from doing anything that rocks the boat. where did you get that he's saying you shouldn't do things that rock the boat? he specifically says even if your individual actions won't "fix" things they can still have meaning. he just thinks you shouldn't use them as an excuse to live in denial or be self righteous. he only really spends ~30 minutes on discussions of individual action, then he covers why arguing about specifics is pointless (the skeleton joke), theorizes what it would take to fight climate change, talks about why we won't do that collectively and acknowledges even then we're locked in for a shitstorm for at least 60 years, then gets into the five stages of climate change grief (the best part of the video imo). if you consider yourself already well versed on this stuff skip to here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNjWOCdony4&t=2628s

Car Hater posted:This is the soul-splitter for me. I grew up nearly unsupervised running around in the woods and now no matter where I go I am stunned be the stillness and emptiness of "nature." There is no nature. It's gone. If you think you see some brave creature surviving in its own way you are wrong, what you see is a lonely ghost, a lost remnant of a world that is long faded in the rearview mirror. same it's not that bad, yet (in canada) but there are a lot fewer bugs and stuff than there used to be

Stereotype posted:there's clearly no hope to fix anything. the equilibrium will be reached when enough people die and enough of industrial society collapses that there is no net increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. there is no other significant force that will cause a decrease in the amount of CO2 created. it's also an underdamped system, so you'll get huge excursions from that eventual equilibrium as well. it is possible that equilibrium is at a point where all life is dead, and it is likely that the excursions will kill off most of humanity. so what you're saying is Cold on a Cob posted:things aren't that bad, yet
