Hello once again, and welcome back to the Game Boy Game Club.

:siren: Click here to be taken to what we're all playing at the moment! :siren:

Back in 2019, I started the first iteration of the Game Boy Game Club [old thread here]. Inspired by the old Retro Game Masters threads that Shlapintogan ran years and years ago, the idea was to explore some of the lesser known titles of what I feel like is an incredibly underappreciated library for one of my absolute favourite systems.

We got through a number of games and then the thread kind of trailed off as I headed off on honeymoon at the start of 2020 and then the last two years happened.

With the release of the Analogue Pocket, a couple of folks indicated they'd be down for the thread ressurecting and it seems like a good time for everyone to jump on board and come and experience the weird and wonderful world of Game Boy games.

Each month, we'll play through three games. One will be a GB game, one a GBC game and the final one will be a GBA game. I'm always happy to take suggestions of games you'd like to see, so speak up in the thread if there's something you want to see come up!

Once upon a time there were challenges accompanying each game and I was keeping track but this turned out to be a lot of overhead and also making challenges for low-complexity old handheld games is hard. Now we just play the games and talk about them! If you want to make the games potentially more challenging or engaging for yourself take a look at https://retroachievements.org/

If you don't have original hardware, emulators are available on a variety of devices.

Emulators/ROMs: The sensible and most affordable option. I recommend BGB for a lightweight and easy to use emulator that can emulate Game Boy games in either original, Color, or Super Game Boy mode. Obviously due to Something Awful’s :filez: rules, I can’t link you to ROMs but if you type ”<game name> ROM” into Google or poke around on Archive.org I’m sure you’ll find what you’re looking for. Just make sure to delete them within 24 hours, my Uncle works at Nintendo and he is extremely litigious.

If you do have original hardware then consider using a flashcart:

Flashcart: A hybrid option for those of you who might want to play on original hardware but don’t want to try and track down physical copies of these games, the EverDrive-GB X3/X5/X7 (all at https://krikzz.com/store/) allows you to load ROM files onto an SD card, plug it into the EverDrive cartridge and play the ROM on original hardware – depending on the version of your flashcart it may also have the ability to use otherwise emulator-only features like savestates.

Okay, so, the games for January 2022!

James Bond 007 is a great little top-down Action Adventure game hidden away on the Game Boy, with a puzzle solving feel not too dissimilar to something like Link's Awakening. Travel the world as James Bond and solve puzzles, karate chop goons, and take time to play some baccarat in a casino. I had this as a kid and had very fond memories of it besides at least one bullshit maze that I suspect I will groan at the second I get back to it on a replay. I have this on physical cart and may very well play this on the original cart if the battery holds up!

A copy of the manual can be found here: https://www.thegameisafootarcade.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/James-Bond-007-Game-Manual.pdf

Quarth is a falling block puzzle game combined with a shmup - blocks will drop from the top of the screen, the player shoots little cubes up from their ship to complete these into square or rectangle shapes to clear them from the screen. If blocks cross the threshold at the bottom of the screen, you lose instantly.

A copy of the manual can be found here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1w5RWv2xscyj-nup0XrWGrtPvAE6J5XoG/view

Hammerin' Harry: Ghost Building Company was my wildcard pick for this round because although I'm loosely aware of Hammerin' Harry as a series, I've never actually played any of them. From hot takes that I've dutifully scoured across the internet, this appears to be widely regarded as a good but hard action platformer. There's also some shmup stages thrown in to break things up, because why not.
It also has what I think might be some of the worst box art I've ever seen for a Game Boy release!

I haven't found a manual online for it yet, but I suspect nobody is going to need it!

I've decided to start with Hammerin Harry. So far, I'm enjoying it a lot! There's definitely a lot of "enemy spawns near you and dives at you" - it's important to stay calm and not flail about, you should always have time to deal with attackers but if you swing and miss, you'll get punished for it. The sprites are big and colourful and cute but the slow walk pace and general low enemy speed makes it feel deliberately paced rather than cramped

Some tips:

You can hold up to raise your hammer above your head, this blocks things like falling debris.
If you force an enemy off-screen, they'll just drop back in suddenly from the top of the screen, make sure you don't get hit.

Living the real retro game experience here as I just lost my in-progress Quarth game due to the batteries in my modded GBC running out!
Game seems cool but the early levels are pretty slow.

The boss that spits bomb at you at the end of the underwater/sewer/factory stage in Hammerin Harry is absolutely destroying me.

Edit: Very glad the continues are 1) infinite and 2) put you back at the boss and not the start of the stage, that's very generous

I've got an Analogue Pocket pre-ordered for the next round, already own a backlit-modded GBC (one of BennVenn's original FreckleShack LCD kits that wasn't the cleanest install job so there's things about it that bug me), and god drat if that Q5 screen doesn't make me want to hunt down another GBC, grab some aftermarket parts and get modding again.

I love these systems.

I think I've said this somewhere else on the forums at some point, but one of the reasons I really enjoy retro handheld gaming is the design focus that went along with the games - a lot of games (well, the good ones at least) are designed to be played in short, manageable chunks. If not, then they are short enough that once you've mastered the game (not always an easy feat) they become single session gaming experiences. Particularly as I get older and busier, that sort of tightly focused design and short length becomes very appealing.

The Switch (the Switch Lite especially) fills the modern handheld niche, but as the power and capability of consoles has grown we see more focus on the idea of taking console games and making them handheld rather than a focus on handheld game design, and to me that makes it feel like something got lost along the way. Don't get me wrong, being able to play bigger experiences like Super Mario Odyssey or Breath of the Wild on the go has been great - I just feel a tiny twinge of sadness that the 3DS felt like the last hurrah of dedicated handhelds with unique libraries.

I was fortunate enough to have mostly owned kick rear end Game Boy games, which might go a long way to explaining why I like it so much.

I'd played (and borrowed) friends Game Boy's here and there but I'm fairly certain my first Game Boy was the clear Play It Loud! model. It owned. I never convinced my parents to get me a Pocket given it was only a year or so after I'd gotten my original GB, but then got an atomic purple GBC when they came out.

For GB I had:

Tetris
Game & Watch Gallery
Donkey Kong
Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters
Megaman: Dr Wily's Revenge
Mole Mania
Monster Max
Link's Awakening
Wario Land
Pokemon Blue
Pokemon Yellow

I think I borrowed Kirby's Dream Land off somebody and they never asked for it back, and I'm pretty sure I bought James Bond 007 when it was on deep discount in a local Big W some time circa 2000.

For GBC my memory gets much shakier as I was gaming across a bunch of different systems and I didn't hang on to a lot of these, but I remember owning:

Mario Tennis
Dragon Warrior Monsters
Perfect Dark
Pokemon Pinball
Pokemon Gold
Bionic Commando: Elite Forces

for sure.

Nevermind, worked it out.

Stand close to the boss, hold UP and hit B repeatedly to do a little upthrust with your hammer.
Bombs should either be knocked back past you far enough that they won't hit you, or they'll be knocked up on to the bosses head.
When he's hit, duck under him as he crosses to the other side then quickly move jump over to join him to avoid any final bombs.
Repeat as necessary, you may need to tweak your position slightly as his rate of fire increases but the trick is definitely to stay in close and upthrust.

Hey everyone,

Given that we're about halfway through the month it's probably time to work out how we pick games to keep this train rolling.

There are a couple of approaches I can think of, please chime in and let me know what you'd be keen to do or if you have any better ideas.

Option 1: Mode 7 Dictatorship

I continue arbitrarily picking whatever games I drat well feel like.
Pro: Nobody has to do anything.
Con: My tastes are weird and you'll have to deal with it.

Option 2: Dictatorship of the Game Boy Proletariat
We rotate through each poster picking three games each month.

Pro: Everyone gets a chance to force other people to play poo poo they like
Con: Might be waiting a long while for your turn, relies on folks being invested in nominating stuff

Option 3: Gigantic Random List

Everyone nominates two or three games each, we through them into a giant list and then randomly pull three out each month

Pro: Everyone gets input
Con: Subject to the winds of random chance which might lead to some odd months

Personally I think Option 3 sounds good because it's pretty minimal effort for me to keep the OP updated off the back of it, we get a wide variety of games/tastes and people can suggest whatever they like.

I'm fine with this, it's not too much extra work!

bowmore your punishment for suggesting it though is you get to be the first poster to put up a game.

For the random games I'll make a list of English GB/GBC games and we'll draw from that because I don't think getting stuck with anything text heavy and Japanese-only will be fun.

Gotta say, I just hit up the a random number generator website to find our first random game for next month and it's cool having it spit out a game that I would never have thought of, or guessed would be on the GB/GBC.
It's also likely not a game I would have tried of my own volition but hey, we'll all get to see how good it is come February. :allears:

I'm still working on Hammerin' Harry, but I haven't had much luck getting past the airship on my attempts so far. I feel like I'm going to sit down some time in some sort of perfect gaming Zen and finish it off.

Marrakech in James Bond is where I struggled as a kid and honestly it's where I can feel my interest waning as an adult; if I find time I still intend to try and push through and see a little more of the game but I think Hammerin' Harry is going to be my number one priority.

Quarth has been a fun little puzzler to bust out a few rounds of on my lunch breaks, but not as addictive as I initially thought it would be.

Announcing our games for February 2022! A little early but I've got more time to write up this post now than I'll likely have in the next day or two.

Game #1 - The Random Selection

It only took this first month to convince me that having one of these games randomly selected is a phenomenal idea, because this is a game that a) I had no idea existed on the Game Boy Color and b) I likely never would have picked myself.

Cruis'n Exotica

The third game in the Cruis'n series got a port to both the N64 and the GBC in 2000. Critical receptions were not kind, though there was some praise for the fact that they got a reasonable facsimile of a Cruis'n game running on the GBC at all. Is this likely to be a good game? No, probably not, but that's all part of the fun.

Game #2 - bowmore's Selection

For his sins in suggesting the split format we're now using, bowmore was charged with selecting our second game for this month.

bowmore posted:

Pinball: Revenge of Gator

The first handheld pinball game to embrace the spirit of a real pinball table. Made by HAL, you know, those people that did Kirby (so you know they know about round things). The ball physics feel nice and the graphics are nice though not amazing - the simply designed table lets you focus on whacking that ball and getting a high score. Even though Pinball: Revenge of Gator came out early in the Game Boy lifespan I think it perfectly encapsulates what Game Boy was made for - short bursts of pick up and play fun times!! It’s not a classic but I think it’s a game everyone should experience at least once.

Jeremy Parish did a nice video on the subject

Game Boy World #012: Revenge of the Gator (HAL, 1989)

The person with the highest score at the end of the month gets to choose the next game!

Game #3 - Mode 7's Selection
So that just leaves me. I had a few ideas on my short list for this month but given that our random selection and bowmore's choice both tend towards being shorter experiences, I thought I'd select something we can dig our teeth into.

Mole Mania

A top down puzzle game, in Mole Mania you play Muddy the Mole and work your way through a series of interconnected single screen puzzles to rescue your wife and kids from the evil farmer Jinbe. Muddy can dig underground to move around rooms out of sight of enemies and under obstructions, as well as push or throw large black balls around the room in order to crush or trap enemies. The game was originally released in 1996 and received a re-release on the Nintendo 3DS VC in 2012. What makes it particularly noteworthy is that it was produced by Shigeru Miyamoto, definitely one of his lesser known games.

You can find a copy of the manual for the game here!

Let's talk about composer Alberto Jose Gonzalez, the Tim Follin of the Game Boy - right down to making incredible music for really poo poo games (Gonzalez himself credits Follin as an inspiration).

He got his start making music for the MSX and ZX Spectrum and you can definitely hear those euro game music influences.

Here's the Mountains from The Smurfs. Listen to those chunky reggae arpeggios. The NES version is better but this is still pretty drat good.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x35H3mcTDfM

He seems to have particularly had an affinity for kickass Mountain tracks, as this is Mountain from the game Spirou, a game I have never heard of that wikipedia informs me is based on a comic I have never heard of. I'm Australian, it's not my fault.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRZ-J6krc_w

He also got some great stuff out of the Game Boy Color which is generally regarded as having a bit of a tinnier/crappier sound than the original Game Boy. This is Scroll Stage from Turok 2 for the GBC.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=st4aSeFzEBA

And the kickass BGM 2 from Turok Rage Wars, again for the Game Boy Color.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8x1ybf2SMzc

There's one final track I want to highlight though, which is from Metal Masters which I haven't played but it looks like absolute dogshit. If you only listen to one of these, make it this one.
I think hands down this is the most impressive piece of music in a released in an original Game Boy game.

tl;dr Alberto Jose Gonzalez absolutely owns.

:siren:March is Game Boy Color month!:siren:

Both leper khan and myself have picked GBC games for this month. Delightfully, our random game pick this month has both an original Game Boy release and a Game Boy Color re-release that is the same game with a) the magic of colour and b) better difficulty options.

Let's take a look at our games for March.

leper khan's pick - Mr. Driller (GBC)

The kick-rear end puzzle series Mr. Driller got its start in arcades in 1999, originally intended by designer Yasuhito Nagaoka to be Dig Dug 3. A blend of Dig Dug and a block puzzle game like Columns, players control their little drilling avatar and drill their way down through a series of coloured blocks. If a group of blocks is all the same colour, drilling out one will remove all of them, creating space for you to move through. Any blocks above that empty space however will start to fall down, potentially linking up with other blocks of the same colour to allow you to start chaining large combos, but also threatening you with a swift death by crushing should you be caught in the way. Additionally players also have to contend with their O2 meter that slowly decreases as they drill, having to prioritise certain routes to snag oxygen capsules that will let them keep going.

This leads to a great balance of the player needing to drill quickly, but carefully - careless drilling will get you crushed, or trapped in a position where you need to drill though an "X" block that will rapidly deplete your O2 meter.

A copy of the manual for Mr. Driller can be found here:
https://archive.org/details/NintendoGameBoyColorManuals/Mr.%20Driller%20%28USA%29/

The Random Pick - Mr. Nutz (GB) / Mr. Nutz (GBC)

To be entirely transparent here, the RNG selected the Game Boy version of Mr. Nutz. Some looking into the game revealed that the Game Boy Color version wasn't a different game in the series but is in fact the same game just re-released for the GBC with better, colour graphics and some modifications to the difficulty by allowing you to start with more lives/continues than the original DMG game. Given that the games aren't distinct, I think it makes sense for us to just knock both versions out at the same time - feel free to play whichever one you like, or both!

A project spawned off the back of the closure of Ocean France, artist Philippe Dessoly and programmer Pierre Adane decided that they'd work on developing a platform game for the Amiga. Ocean Software instead wanted to publish it on consoles for both profit reasons and the fear of piracy on the Amiga.

Mr. Nutz (the original working title was "Squirrel's Game" before it was changed to "Mr. Nuts" which was rejected by Ocean Software, so it became "Mr. Nutz" as the far superior "Mr. Deez" would have been too ahead of its time I guess) is one of the many, many, many also-ran mascot platformers of the 90s. Originally a SNES and Mega Drive/Genesis release in 93/94, the game saw ports to the Game Boy and of all things the Sega Channel, with a much later 1999 port to the Game Boy Color and a 2004 GBA remake. (Ironically despite never receiving the original game, the Amiga eventually received the only sequel - Mr. Nutz: Hoppin' Mad. This was meant to be ported to the Mega Drive as Mr. Nutz 2 but was never released - a playable build is apparently out there.)

Given that the designers originally intended this to be an Amiga release, I am expecting some euro-as-hell platforming here, though thankfully it doesn't look like you press up to jump or collect 287 spriggans per level to open the exit. I will confess though the spritework is lovely for the Game Boy, even in the monochrome original version, and critical reactions at the time seemed to peg it as a 7/10 platformer so I remain hopeful this will be playable.

I haven't had any luck finding a manual online - I suspect we won't really need it.

Mode 7's pick - Legend of the River King 2 (GBC)

I thought I'd round out this month's selections with something a little slower paced and lesser known - playing one of the games in this series has been on my to do list for a while!

One of the black, dual-mode carts that will also work on an original Game Boy, Legend of the River King 2 (in Japan, Kawa no Nushi Tsuri 4) is the second Game Boy Color entry for Victor Interactive Software's fishing RPG series. Frequently compared to the Harvest Moon series, the Legend of the River King 2 sees you hunting down the two halves of the Heavenly Stone that have transformed into fish. You will accomplish this by fishing, catching bugs, fishing, diving for clams, fishing, and punching wildlife that wants to eat you in the face to make it go away.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a manual for the second game. What I have found though is a delightful fansite for the Harvest Moon and River King series, which gives me deep pangs of nostalgia because it feels like this sort of content is pretty rare on the internet these days. This has some basic tips about how the game functions, as well as a full walkthrough if anyone gets stuck: https://fogu.com/rk2/index.html

The game has some interesting wrinkles. Notably, you have two different characters that you can start the game as - although their paths converge and they cover all the same content, they'll tackle the early game areas in a different order. Additionally there used to be link cable functionality that would not only let you trade fish with other Legend of the River King 2 players, but also allow you to swap fish and produce between this game and Harvest Moon 2 on the GBC!

So there we have it, our games for March! Enjoy!

I think that's for the original Legend of the River King rather than Legend of the River King 2, as well?

Mr. Driller owns.

Cleared 2500ft with 140040, now to tackle 5000ft and then see how I go with survival mode.

Getting covid knocked me for a loop for a bit but plan to settle in this weekend to see if I can play through Mr Nutz and get started on LotRK 2.

My only problem with playing GB carts on my PS1 is that the mod doesn't do audio :( Lucky I have many other ways. Still should take some pics using the PS1 mod though for lulz.

Please do, I’ve been curious as hell since you first mentioned it in the general retro thread.

None of us have posted impressive scores, even though several of us have had the temerity to post them.

I nominate Froist for the crime of failing to :justpost:

Congratulations/commiserations Froist, nominate a game for next month either by flicking me a PM or dropping it in the thread!

Mr. Nutz is fine. Like, completely fine. Controls are fine, music is.... not great, but acceptable for the period. Level design has some interesting wrinkles from what I played through.

It froze a few worlds in on my flashcart though and even with passwords being available to get me back close to where I was I dunno that I have the desire to finish it.
