They're part of the grand tradition of American intellectual 'comedies' that consist only of people talking repetitively and past each other while various miserable things happen to them. Stanley Elkin is the paradigmatic author of this type but you can also see it in the Joseph Heller novels people don't bother with. There's only been one good one and that's William Gaddis's J.R. and even the comedy there is hard to read.

The new Mulaney show is kinda like a cleaned up version of The Chris Gethard show (Mulaney was a two time guest) but because it heavily leans on guests, heavily screens call ins, and pre-tapes it just doesn't have that carnival atmosphere TCGS had It never feels like Mulaney will totally lose control like often happened with the Gethard show. There will never be a moment like a board game segment on the show being so boring that the musical guest starts destroying the set.
