At its heart it is an adaptation of one of the most unadaptable novels of all time, if you've read the book you will love/hate it for completely different reasons

I hated the book and the movie for the same reason. They're part of the grand tradition of American intellectual 'comedies' that consist only of people talking repetitively and past each other while various miserable things happen to them. Stanley Elkin is the paradigmatic author of this type but you can also see it in the Joseph Heller novels people don't bother with.

There's only been one good one and that's William Gaddis's J.R. and even the comedy there is hard to read.

Not quite feeling Poker Face. It just seems less like detectiving and more like stumbling into poo poo when she has an infallible lie detector that's always on.

What episodic detective series aren't this?

How much coke do you have to do to conclude that a reputation for quality is a bad thing?

When it carries connotations of being expensive and ad free? Discovery's whole model is serving slop to millions of cheap customers. If it wants the streaming service to efficiently serve slop and have mid episode ad breaks then getting rid of the HBO makes sense.

The new Mulaney show is kinda like a cleaned up version of The Chris Gethard show (Mulaney was a two time guest) but because it heavily leans on guests, heavily screens call ins, and pre-tapes it just doesn't have that carnival atmosphere TCGS had

It never feels like Mulaney will totally lose control like often happened with the Gethard show. There will never be a moment like a board game segment on the show being so boring that the musical guest starts destroying the set.

How are you even supposed to watch the Gethard show.

On YouTube, everything's up there except for the last two seasons

One Man's Trash is the iconic episode but there's various amounts of gold spread all over

There's an episode guide here, just pick one you like the guests on :

Personally, I'm a big fan of the chaos public access episodes like Ruin This Show, The Hero's Journey, J.D.'s Nightmare or the 2016 Election Special (which was only broadcast once and never again).

You can even watch the successor show The Special on youtube which was a very very different public access show but also featured Richard Kind in at least one episode as well as murderer Michael Alig.

Or Chris Gethard Presents series which highlighted up and coming comedians doing public access episodes in the style of tcgs on youtube. There might even be some of the planet scum broadcasts out there.

Or even more there's the George Lucas Talk Show which features a lot of TCGS alums
