poo poo like this is more fascinating and entertaining than WWE puts out on TV.

At least I'm assuming. I stopped watching when they got rid of the Spirit Squad, but even back then, it was kinda that way too.

A bunch of us who haven't watched WWE in a long time decided to watch the Royal Rumble last weekend because it was supposed to feature a bunch of people we like and have some fun surprises.

It was loving awful. Pretty much every match on the whole card was terrible. There were 2 big name big hype singles matches with a ton of buildup. The first of those matches was extremely good.......until the DQ finish. The other match ended up better than anyone expected.......until the ref got knocked out accidentally and Paul Heyman turned on Brock Lesnar and re-aligned with Roman Reigns causing Brock to lose.

Then, THEN, the Royal Rumble itself was anywhere from bad to decent until near the end when Shane McMahon, who apparently hasn't even watched his own company's product in along time, booked himself to come out at #28, beat up some established stars, and stay in there until the end.

THEN, because this is the WWE and only 2 guys matter, Brock Lesnar somehow magically came out at #30 and took everyone else out in like 3 minutes. The next to last person eliminated was Shane loving McMahon and the last one was a returning Drew McIntyre who got a huge pop from the crowd. Brock won. Do not ask the obvious question of "would Brock have been #30 if he had won his match?" because nobody booking the show did either.

Anyway, pretty much all of us watching this awful shitshow reaffirmed that we all stopped watching a long time ago because of this same kind of stupid bullshit. Nothing has changed.

Oh and their safety standards are so awful that the huge WrestleMania sign that was hanging over a section of the crowd caught fire not once but TWICE during the show. No reported injuries thankfully but lmfao at this toilet company.

Yeah. It's considered 'tradition' that if a wrestler is leaving or retiring, they 'go out on their back', ie lose to make someone else look good. But WWE is run by perverts and misogynists like every other business, so not only did Lita lose her final match as 'per tradition', afterwards she got humiliated one final time. I can even see the logic of it; Lita's 'betrayal' of Matt was 'never forgiven' (but wait) by the fans and she was 'forever' the Treacherous Slut, and every crowd would let her know it, in a weird mix of mark "She is bad and we will call her bad names!" and internet types "She loving betrayed Matt and I am going to make sure the whore knows it, no never mind it takes two to cheat and Edge never got this nasty real life aspect for his part as part of his 'heel heat' but she's the woman so she's A WHHHOOORRREEEEE". She's retiring, might as well get in a final boot stomp from the fans so she can know how bad it was that she did Those Bad Things.

But if it makes you feel any better, afterwards her friends took her out to a quiet goodbye party, and when she returned for a guest appearance a few years later, the absence had made the fans forget their stupid (and inconsistent, and misogynist, and taken too far) grudge and she was cheered as any returning 'legend' would be, which has remained the case ever since.

A notable exception to this, for some weird reason, is Trish Stratus. Her last match was against Lita and for some reason she won. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad that happened, but I've always been curious to why she got an exception.

The thing that sort of offsets some of that is that in AEW nobody does that stuff and his rear end would be kicked to the curb instantly if he ever tried any of that. There are also many stories of him being a relatively positive influence on younger talent backstage and helping them out and giving them advice.

In summary, Mark Henry is a land of contrasts.

And I'm guessing like comic books it's incomprehensible unless you're familiar with decades of continuity that it nevertheless also contradicts.

AEW and WWE both have enough promos and video packages to catch you up on the relevant parts of the ongoing stories. It's not like wrestling or comics are completely impenetrable to new fans. They design both forms of media to be somewhat accessible. You're not going to know everything about everyone if you start watching AEW this week but you'll get there quick if you stick around for a while. The commentary on the YouTube shows is a lot more casual than the weekly TV shows. Dynamite and Rampage have announcers in character but they don't yell at each other constantly the way WWE announcers do.

The YouTube shows also occasionally rotate commentators which is refreshing and fun. Sometimes Eddie Kingston gets to call matches and it's the best poo poo ever.

Speculation right now is that he's trying to sell the company and that the reason it hasn't been sold yet is because he wants way too much money for it.

I have nothing to back up any of this so take it with a huge chunk of salt.

If that is true and it gets sold then it's in the hands of whoever buys it, although I fully expect Stephanie to still be involved and treat everyone like poo poo the same way her dad does.

edit: the reason for the speculation is all the mass firings and cost cutting they've been doing in the last couple years. They seem to be following a similar pattern to what other companies do when they're trying to sell. Again, there is nothing confirmed, just people noticing business practice patterns.

You know who else got hosed because he got popular without Vince's consent? Rusev. I'm sure someone could give the whole story better than me, so I'll just give my brief story.

I used to watch WWE off and on in the 2000s but fell off until the mid 2010s. Right before I got back to watching it, had a customer tell me I resembled Rusev. I got back to WWE and he easily became one of my favorites. A couple years later we went to Smackdown being filmed in Glendale, by Cardinal Stadium. Like Rusev, one of our friends is from Rusev, and we brought him with us. It was his first and only WWE live event he'd ever been to. This episode happened to be the very birth of RUSEV DAY. Nobody knew this going in. They gave Rusev a segment where he got his own holiday and held a ceremony by an actual Bulgarian mayor. They made everyone stand up and Rusev sang the Bulgarian national anthem. It was pretty incredible. Then the coward Randy Orton came and attacked them.

Anyway. Rusev Day would end up being incredibly popular. From then on, "RUSEV DAY" would be chanted by audiences on air and at live events. I even heard people chant it at NXT house shows, which were untelevised and not something he was part of. TODAY IS RUSEV DAY shirts constantly sold out.

I don't know what happened behind the scenes, but they'd just never let him win much of anything at that point. They killed Rusev Day. Eventually he got released. I'm glad he's thriving in AEW.

Per Gavok from the AEW primer thread I linked earlier:

Gavok posted:

Miro was Rusev, who represented Russia despite being Bulgarian. Whatever. He spent a long while being an unbeatable hoss. They payoff was losing a feud to John Cena and that’s when the problems started. See, Rusev’s real-life girlfriend was his valet Lana. Vince McMahon thought Lana was hot and for some reason it broke his mind that she’d be with Rusev. He put together a storyline where Lana left him for Dolph Ziggler while Rusev just got Summer Rae to dress like Lana. The storyline came to an abrupt end when TMZ reported that Rusev and Lana were engaged.

Rusev started teaming up with Aiden English and got over huge with his “Rusev Day” gimmick. Crowds went crazy for him and would constantly chant for him. Vince still refused to push him. He even refused to acknowledge his popularity. Rusev sold out all of his merchandise? Well, I guess they just made too little, then. When Rusev’s contract was nearing its end, Vince tried to sweeten things up for him in hopes of making him re-sign. Said sweetening was a main-event storyline where Lana was cheating on him with Bobby Lashley and Rusev was made to look like a total dork.

That was all she wrote for Rusev, who left the company. Once Miro appeared in AEW, Lana started a storyline where she was put through a table week after week.

Then he went to AEW and

When Kip Sabian and Penelope Ford were getting ready for their wedding, Kip revealed Miro (WWE’s Rusev) as not only his best man, but THE Best Man. United by their love for video games, the two were a real force as a tag team. Some thought Miro was a little too goofy, what with his interest in gaming and his fashion choices, but as he dominated the ring, the real Miro underneath started to boil through. Underneath the smiles was a vicious beast of a man who wanted to crush everyone in his way to prove his dominance.

When Kip took the pin for a major tag match, Miro showed his true colors by hunting down the elusive Kip, brutalizing him, then explaining, “I forgive you.” From there, he’s become a singles competitor, who thanks God for giving him the strength to make short work of all of his opponents, with extra thanks for giving him a crazy hot wife who can do splits.

He had a really long run with the TNT title and only lost it to Sammy Guevara because he had a hamstring injury. He's currently taking time off to heal and hang out on a boat with his hot wife.

When your only metric for success is money, none of that stuff matters. The most recent Royal Rumble was a total letdown and a huge turd but they don't care because a ton of people bought it, and as long as most of them buy WrestleMania then they don't care.

We the fans can say they've failed a million ways but as long as they're making record profits or close to it they can claim they're doing everything right because their metric for success, money, is still meeting expectations. As long as marks are subscribing to the network and buying merch, Vince and Bruce don't care.

And unfortunately they've also created a large fanbase of extremely weird stans who defend or excuse every single stupid thing they do and attack other promotions, especially AEW, without ever watching them.

They're at the point where they can pretty much do anything they want, bad or good, and they'll still rake in the cash. It sucks but :capitalism:
