That's what I mean when I say Tucker is one of the best kickers there is but he's not a one of the top power guys. He just can't make that kind of power kick. The 66 yarder is pretty much the far limit of what he can do. Which is still crazy that he did it.

Damn it, this always happens. I think I'm gonna score, and then I never score. It's not fair.

Fair catch any punt that lands in a kickable range and take the free kick right after. The general goal for the team would be to go on defense first, get a touchback, three and out, fair catch, fck, repeat. the offense doesn't need to be high scoring or even good - just be able to get a first down here and there while not turning the ball over. they'll basically never be on the field if you do it right.

This feels like the franchise plan for the Chicago Bears for the last 50 80 years. Also select periods in the histories of the Steelers and Ravens.

He bangs through 60+ yarders in pregame regularly and has nailed them from 70+ at times. It’s just a different atmosphere pregame/preseason when no one is trying to block you

Yeah and it says a lot about him that he was able to hit his maximum potential distance during an actual game. He had to even modify his own kicking runup and motion to even have a chance at it.

The reason that record is so hard to set is that most teams won't send their kickers out there in those sorts of situations due to the difficulty of making such kicks in game situations where it's harder. You also risk a block+return or a missed kick return like what happened when Prater missed the 68 yarder. And due to field position issues they are only tried at the end of a half or game. But with kickers becoming better and better you will see more attempts. I think a 70 yard field goal has a good chance of happening in the next 10 years or so.

If guys were regularly sent out there to try 65-70 yarders we'd have certainly seen that 70 yarder by now.

Bad, very bad!

I don't remember where it was from but when he died someone wrote a story about the time he lost again in the playoffs and he just stood at the podium in the press conference and asked the freaking media...what can I do? What did I do wrong?

Not in a taunting or defensive posture, just bereft.

I’d like to remind people that what the judge determines as a punishment, as long as it’s not literally nothing, doesn’t matter one bit and the league can appeal the punishment to themselves and ban him for as long as they want.

also tucker is 32 now. i mean he still hits kickoffs through the uprights regularly (when the strategy isn't to force a return and pin the opposing offense deeper than 25), but he absolutely had that kind of leg strength when he was that age (and still mostly does)

e: Schefter retweeted so it appears to be true-ish until proven otherwise. I did expect him to play this year, but kinda thought he'd sit out camp at least and maybe up through the first week or two of the season.
