If you want a casual rather than technological definition for the purposes of mass rather than niche communications, then any site where "are you on [x]?" is a reasonable yes/no question at a party would work.

Which of course depends on which country and social scene (and what sort of party).

Lol if you think posting on usenet was hard? if 18 year old college students and your nan with an AOL cd could do it, anyone could. That's kind of where the whole 'eternal September' meme came from in the first place.
The big difference is that less than 9% of British homes had access to the internet before 1998, compared to well over 90% after 2018, and it was even more demographically biased.

Your nan could post on usenet in '95 in the same way that she could go into a Cellnet shop and pick up a mobile phone contract, but how many did?

Their horns were goat and fart sounds
And their price tag he could feel

A bolt of fear went through him

I think the £150 council tax rebate and the £200 energy bill reduction are different things.

If I understand the idea the latter is a loan to the remaining energy companies that allows them to give every customer a £200 credit on their bill, and the energy companies will be repaying the loans (and so presumably putting it on your bills when wholesale prices are lower) rather than the government trying to administrate millions of small loans to individuals.

The £150 council tax rebate is a straight tax rebate funded by selling your library to a company that makes nazi meth or something.

I like Folding Ideas a lot, the Flat Earth and NFT videos that have been mentioned in here are genuine masterpieces, but I think he was being somewhat unfair in this one. He really misses the context that Oliver's "War on Nuggets" was started in the context of campaigning against the terrible state of UK school lunch provisions. I'm not saying Jamie's not deserving of a great deal of criticism, but the low funding and terrible nutritional value of school food was awful and he was right to campaign against it.
It may have started in that context, but by the time that he was going on about 'clean' and 'dirty' foods, admonishing working parents for sitting in front of the TV while their dinner cooked instead of actively preparing an authentic Andalusian mierda de culo, or pretending to be appalled that kids like chicken nuggets, he was arguing something entirely different whether he realized it or not. It was a middle class appeal to nature fallacy rather than an argument for good nutritional values by that point.

Thus Spake :wankah:

That in turn led to a lot of circular arguments about "Jamie is unfair about nuggets" "so you support intensive poultry farming?" "no but Jamie doesn't oppose that either, he just wants more of it to be thrown away" that I think the video does a good job of addressing.

I got one of those hot water boilers that just makes a single cup, after years with a gas kettle. I've not done a full power analysis but just from the amount of time it's on (and higher rate of heating, 3kW into a direct heating tube) it seems competitive.

Plus I don't have to start heating it 10 minutes before someone comes round for tea or if I'm making stuffing or sauces.

(but there's also a lot of waste heat from that so I couldn't be certain)
Rough calculations:

Electricity is 20.3p per kWh (!), gas is 4p per kWh. So all being equal it would cost 5x as much to heat a cup of water on electric than gas. But a gas hob is only about 40% efficient (mostly due to heat loss around the sides) and slightly less powerful (~2.5kW as opposed to 3.3kW) allowing more heat to be lost during the longer boiling cycle.

For both gas and electric kettles you'll also need to heat up a bit more water than you need to use or you'll risk knackering them, this scales inversely with how much you need, wasting say half for 1 cup, 25% for 2 cups.

Rough observations:

It takes about 7 minutes to heat up enough water for 2 cups of tea and a bit extra on the gas hob, so say 0.3kWh or 1.2p of gas. A cup boiler takes 30s per cup and draws 3kW so 0.05kWh or 1.015p of electricity.

So actually slightly cheaper for the cup boiler, which I wasn't expecting at first. And much quicker.

This is the cup boiler I got, they're over 50 quid now but I stumbled across one on summer sale at exactly the time my gas kettle started whistling lovely and taking even longer to boil.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZDDndpChUY

If you'd asked me at the time I'd have said it probably costs more per cup but is much faster (and better for air quality). Being cheaper to run too just makes me wish I'd got one years ago.

I've never made an extremely Country Living Magazine pot noodle on it though, so it's possible that I'm using it wrong.
