One of the big stories in Scotland today has been this: Raith Rovers have lost both their home & away kit sponsors, I believe 2 members of their board, the supporters liason officer, they won't even have ball boys at their next match.

For those unfamiliar, the Procurator Fiscal decided there wasn't enough evidence to prosecute so the survivor took the case to civil court & won 6 figures (I think £50k from each of the rapists).

I think reform & rehabilitation have to be at the core of a justice system & Goodwillie hasn't shown a jot of remorse or even accepted that he did anything wrong.

It's a horrible story & Raith seem.to have done themselves possible long-term damage with not just sponsors but also a lot of fans talking about not going back

This is a real shame as despite coming from despite darkest Mordor I have always considered Raith good eggs. Seems like many of their supporters are at least. Surprises me the backlash against Clyde wasn't at a similar scale, maybe it's just because Raith are a bigger club. Anyway, I think they need to climb down from this but they won't reverse all the damage.

One thing I was wondering about the expressing remorse bit, obviously it would be the right thing to do but wouldn't that open him to a criminal charnge?

Anyway McPake out.

Yeah, Raith are in a battle for the playoff spot to get in the top flight, Clyde were League 2 when he signed with them, although there was a bit of backlash at the time (poo poo SNP member John Mason declared he'd not go back to Broadwood).

As for if some remorse would be legally admissible for a court case? No idea but I would hope so.

Crossposting myself from the covid thread:

Dunno if anyone's interested but I can't stop messing around with the UK covid data and realistically this is why they're all making "it's over" noises:

This is how the CFR now compares with last year. That jump to an >4% CFR isn't because of a lack of testing, as it was in the early days, or because Alpha was notably deadlier than Wuhan or other variants, it's because the NHS was unable to cope with the number of patients. Now whether or not you take the much lower CFR being all to do with Omicron or all to do with vaccines (I suspect mostly the latter but a little of the former) it's indisputable that we're now dealing with a much less deadly disease.

Now of course you certainly can argue we're relaxing too much way too soon even with that, but it's hard to argue that measures that were suitable last winter are suitable here and now.

One last titbit - covid deaths so far this winter are actually considerably lower than flu deaths in 2014/15, the last really nasty year for flu in the UK (44k deaths over the winter in England and Wales - we're currently at 15k covid deaths since the beginning of November, and losing about a thousand people a week, so *extremely* unlikely to overtake that number).

OK, but what's CFR? Because without knowing that this doesn't mean much. COVID Fatality Rate?

Let's be clear here, any trade union that isn't at least discussing pulling funding from this version of the Labour Party is eminently suss.

That other bit you'll have to source because I'd like to read more. Because I had a look around & the most recent ballot was on London Underground where "Last year Aslef members voted 98.8 per cent in favour of walkouts if TfL introduced changes to their work benefits without consultation". "Work benefits" doesn't mean work from home, it means their pensions, working conditions & safety. If it's not that that one then please do fill me in. Before that the most recent talk of even considering a strike I can find was with ScotRail in March 2021.

My initial reaction to any utterly absurd sounding claims about unions is suspicion. Deep suspicious. Because there's 200 years of history of workers demands being misrepresented by government & the media.

Ended up reading the Wikipedia article about the Azov Battallion. It's fun. "In 2014, a spokesman for the regiment said around 10–20% of the unit were neo-Nazis." There's also a good line that in September '14 they were merged into the National Guard & "worked to de-politicise itself", followed by multiple examples of it being less than apolitical. "took part in a march...organised by the Right Sector", "Beginning in 2015, Azov has organised summer camps where children and teenagers receive combat training mixed with lectures on Ukrainian nationalism". And seemingly they have quite a few fash from across Europe among their number, including at least 1 Englishmen. And sure, their logo looks an awful lot like the Wolfsangel used by, among other divisions, the notorious SS 2nd Panzer Division Das Reich, who massacred civilians pretty much wherever they went from France to Russia, but just a coincidence, it means Ідея Нації, because you see, in Old Ukrainian, before Peter The Great, N was replaced by Н for the n sound. And the less said about the founder Biletsky's attitudes to minorities in Ukraine the better (Jews, Romanians in Bukovina & Bessarbia, presumably Russians throughout the country, Bulgarians mainly in Budjak, Slovaks & Hungarians in the Carpathians). We sure know how to pick allies.
