I was just going to post the same: https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/chernobyl-power-plant-captured-by-russian-forces-ukrainian-official-2022-02-24/

Someone educate me, I was under the assumption that the plant, while partially functional, shouldn't be seeing active "fighting" due to all the spicy air about. Other than being able to turn off the lights in some areas, what is the importance of this plant strategically?

Everything so far seems like Putin wants all of Ukraine, not just those two regions.

I know very little about international/maritime law as it applies to this kind of situation.

How quickly will these attacks draw action from various countries? Would a move like this on a US flagged merchant ship draw a kinetic response from us? Do merchant ship flags work like that?

The maritime sector is weird because in most cases a ship is owned by a national of country A, flagged by country B, and crewed by countries C, D, and E (statistically those are the Philippines, India, and Ukraine as the big 3). So you get a diffusion of responsibility going on where all of those countries can either claim they care about the issue or alternately and more commonly, they tut-tut it while not feeling like they actually have to do anything about it. In this case I'd expect it to not be a big deal.

US is weird because of the Jones act, if a ship is US-owned and US-flagged then it usually has US crew so it's more likely to get a response, which is one of the things that made the "Captain Phillips" story end differently than the other roughly 1000 seafarers kidnapped about the same time from non-US ships.

Makes more sense now. Thanks for the explanation.

Everyone is afraid of engaging with the guy who has nukes. People are freaking out just thinking about that possibility. Right now, we are content to continue along the proxy war route it seems. Not gonna lie, it seems rather effective at turning Russian equipment into scrap.

Edit: to support my claims, Geneva Conventions say artillery is OK, but not when it isn't "targeted" and not when used "indiscriminately" . We shoot back, either killing dude or not.

If dude is still alive, has buddies in the same building, or starts some more serious poo poo we call it in.

Building explodes from artillery/missile/rocket/guided bomb.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

In that example, all munitions used are "long range". Artillery/rocket/missile guys get a grid location, bombs get it painted, with a few mix/match for various systems. The people shooting these things rarely, if ever, see what they are shooting at

Not like balancing duals does poo poo anyhow.
