I don't think it's possible for the Senate to vote in a way that beats a filibuster (60) but doesn't beat a veto override (67). Either you attract all 50 republicans or zero of them. There is no issue that will attract more than 10 but fewer than 17, the Senate just doesn't work like that any more Not saying the bill will definitely pass, but I don't think we'll be in a situation where Biden's veto makes the difference

The entire thing could've been a publicity stunt. The main problem with the publicity stunt hypothesis is that Smith dropping f-bombs made the whole thing unfit for American television. I fully believe it was a moment of uncontrolled anger.

Of all the pop media to provide a template for the collapse of America, I would never have guessed The SlapVelocity Raptor posted:20% seems like a really low income tax to hit multi-millionaires with. I mean, it'll be great if it is able to curb some of the loopholing most businesses do to pay nothing, or even get rebates, but I pay around 30-35% in taxes. Hopefully there is more to this that I don't know about or understand, but this feels like doing the minimum to appear like he's doing something to mollify the masses, but not really affecting the rich. "Normal" people will still be paying more in taxes than the rich will. It's nothing compared to the soaking the rich deserve, and it's not a wealth tax, but in practical terms it's probably a big hike for people with creative accountants

Since 1967, the complex (region, really) consisting of Disney World and its supporting facilities has functioned as a Disney-governed enclave within Florida. But now Ron DeSantis is so incensed that Disney has made a few belated, halfhearted statements against the Don't Say Gay Act that he's trying to undo that.quote:The Florida Legislature has concluded its regular session for the year, but is meeting this week in a special session to address a Congressional redistricting map. In a proclamation on Tuesday, DeSantis amended the special session to allow the Legislature to take action against Disney. It sucks to even consider siding with DeSantis, but on the other hand "disney-governed enclave" is probably not something that should have existed in the first place. On the third hand, Florida wouldn't dare to hurt one of the top tourist destinations in the world and all the money it brings in, right?

There may not be much of a connection between the culture war and the incoming bloodbath, that's being caused primarily by federal inaction DeSantis is pushing the culture war because he thinks it gives him far-right cred in the 2024 presidential primary, and it's getting a lot of airplay because it aligns with the goals of the conservative movement writ large
