 deep within Bruniquel Cave in south-west France are these weird rings of stacked-up stalagmites. turns out they're 176,000 years old! Neanderthals were the only humans living there at the time, so they must have built it... but why? the cave is too deep for natural light so you wouldn't want to actually live there. maybe there's some practical purpose we've yet to fathom... or maybe it has spiritual significance?? who's to say? that is the beauty and tragedy in such things, we can never know for sure
