Does Zuck think this is the future?? Billions of dollars really does rot your brain.

It's basic and lame but I guess I'm mostly shocked by how patronizing the "onboarding" experience looks. It's like someone took the "how corporations will ruin the afterlife" short, or a throwaway gag from a Black Mirror episode and somehow took that completely straight as a source of inspiration and tried to reverse engineer it into a user experience. The horizon avatars look a lot like those of the human hamster maze inhabitants in the dystopian fantasy of Fifteen Million Merits.

Welcome to Your New Life in the Perfect World We Created For You.

There are so many ways they could have done this better, for a lot less. The technology on display is shockingly basic. The floating-torso avatars glitching around in random hops create about as much realistic "presence" as the little 2D habbo hotel sprites did around 2005.

The art direction is so insulting and terrible, everything is flat shaded plastic with no shadows. Those loving trees. THAT's what they throw at you as the official landing zone?

Consider how Valve encourages community participation in forming the post-release lifecycle of their games and technology. The Steam Workshop is full of vibrant communities having fun doing whatever they want, however they want. The experience starts outside of the game world. Users must have a solid sense of ownership of stuff they contribute.

If your users are normally functioning grownups then don't loving patronize them with unconditional, cheerful "great job!" feedback for their first terrible and experimental and probably only vaguely committed attempts at hammering something together with the jankiest imaginable in-game building tools with assets resembling kindergarten block toys.

Meta is being too greedy, too imposing when delineating the boundary of the experience such that on connection you "land" inside their world. Why isn't there a (groan) meta lobby space around it that is neutral and conceptually (if not practically) user-owned? You should be able to land in "your" space, or a public lobby space of your choosing, and trivially work on your avatar and building stuff, experimenting with the technology, socializing, etc, without stepping into the "official" Meta poo poo with their hideous designs and baby games.

There's just nothing to LIKE about horizon worlds.

VRchat as it currently exists, fulfills about 99% of everything that Meta claims they want to do with their tech.

It was february or march of 2002, during the times of the grisly final contractions of the DotCom Bubble. Ashburn, VA. Dear Leader had already screwed up the company to the tune of what was then a shocking a mount - hundreds of millions of dollars worth of inappropriate loans to cover bad dotcom bets, disguised by cooking the books. Our stock was in the toilet but officially things were "still fine" and Uncle Bernie appeared weekly on TV screens for all-hands meetings, assuring us everything is under control. All the while more and more people were being laid off.

But one monday morning we came into office to find all snacks and the free coffee makers had been removed from all the campus pantries. Instead old 1980s style vending machines had been put in. Really old clunkers. Dispensing stale coffee into dixie cups for $0.50 a pop*. They wanted us to come to work with a pocket full of quarters to buy coffee from these loving vending machines. These were the "frugality measures" that should save the company.

I put in my two week notice a couple of weeks later. A few weeks after that the company went bankrupt to huge global headlines only eclipsed a little while later that summer when Enron folded.

* the dixie cups were dispensed with a probability of around 95%.

The tesla 3 series initially shipped with radars. But not anymore. Big brain musk deleted all sensors other than the cameras and declared that they would be enough for FSD. Tesla invested substantially in realistic simulation of what the cameras see in different situations so as to feed scenarios to the AI training work, but cameras are often just blinded by adverse lighting conditions or covered in dirt.

Not from a commercial sign maker; they would have been able to form the logo shape exactly from sheet metal and CNC or lasercut plastics. This is some kind of janky-rear end improvisation put together with very little preparation, and you can see they can only approximate the logo shape because the block sizes don't fit.

However, my impression is that the earliest of these models didn't really have a good seal between the rolled-up windows and the roof. Only by the early 1980s did convertibles have reliable electronic automation for this stuff. I had an antique $5K BMW E36 shitbox 5-speed convertible built in 1996 and it had a microprocessor that pulled the side windows down to clear the roof frame in like a split second as you pulled the door handle from either side, or when the canvas top was rolling up or down.

in my interpretation, the cbrtrk has these design drivers:
* It is styled to evoke 1990s James Cameron type scifi military poo poo like the APC from "Aliens".
* The marketing bullshit should tick boxes to make you think you're getting a practical, civilian version of the Marauder, as demonstrated on Top Gear.

Recall the disastrous demonstration with the (LOL) armored side windows. Elmo of course probably didn't even tell his engineers that they were supposed to be bulletproof or whatever he claimed at the time. Look at the "armored" wheel covers.

The concept is ferrying rich white people from one secure gated community to another, through the genpop wasteland full of poors.

I don't think the engineering is quite going to deliver any meaningful level of utility or protection in that regard, but I think word-of-mouth marketing for the thing is going to be full of dog whistles to that effect.
