I wasn’t around for the HW trailer drop, so I can’t quite comment on that, but a note on the SB trailer. It actually has two different releases, and this pattern would continue with Shadowbringers and Endwalker, where there’s a teaser version before everything from the current final patch is done, and then the full version later after all event have been resolved. The teaser version dropped before the second half of 3.5 dropped so it was before the reveal that Yda was Lyse, as well as her new look. It might be worth looking up the teaser version just to sort of see what they decided to save for the big reveal with the full version, since the original teaser only had the statue fight. So before HW fully ended, we had an idea that we were headed for Ala Mhigo, but didn’t know the exact events that would lead to it, as well as not knowing who Lyse was. The full trailer reveal then was a big hype moment when it made that sudden jump over to the East to reveal we were also headed there, alongside the samurai job reveal.

My personal favorite part of this: Lyse's outfit here, and the fact we didn't get the monk stuff, meant that lots of people thought she was a dancer and it was a tease for that class.

Anyway, Blood of Storms time!

I also did not like Lyse here but it is supposed to be a mistake she makes and learns from so oh well.

Anyway, yes, the Skulls are probably the part of Stormblood I am most interested in. RE: Gaius, I very much think he did intend to let the Skulls be a legitimate fighting force to help Ala Mhigans integrate, but his own biases and lofty position meant that it didn't actually help anybody. He does seem to know, intellectually, that Garlemald has a racism problem, he just thinks it's something he (or another Strong Ruler) will fix singlehandedly when they achieve the power needed.

Yeah, this is one of my big problems with Stormblood: You spend like a level and a half there before you get sent over to Doma.

Considering how long Ala Mhigo has been foreshadowed in comparison to Doma it feels exceedingly off.

I didn't mind Lyse coming along, though. She is the Punch Scion, she would like to punch things, and there will not be many things to punch in Ala Mhigo at the moment.

Marauder quests aren't great, but the quest where you fight the whole guild in disguise is pretty amazing, so I don't hate them too much.

Hellioning
Jun 27, 2008

It was!

Poor melee DPS had to all level dragoon to the 40s to get a cooldown, I think every caster had to level black mage for swiftcase, provoke was a cross class skill so you might run into warriors that didn't have it...

For the record, the reason you might think it's weird to tie Warrior's invuln to the 'grab enemy and keep it locked down' ability is because originally all Holmgang did was the latter, but Warrior was significantly weaker than Paladin without an invuln and so they added one in on one of their other skills.

And yes WAR 50-60 is significantly better than 30-50.

Hellioning

Yeah not a big fan of fighting Zenos again, especially because it's almost the exactly same fight. I didn't mind Yugiri and I didn't mind the WoL choosing to fight him, I just didn't think the fight was that fun.

I'm also not a fan of this being the third time in a row we've convinced a formerly beaten down group of people to fight back against the Imperials even after they told us they were tired and scared to fight. I get that this is obviously going to be a theme in the expac about rebelling but I was still tired of the similar plot points by Yanxia

I'm waiting for the rest of the story to comment everything, but the Samurai 60-70 story is probably the single biggest reason I think Kugane was a mistake and is the worst part of Stormblood.

The first solo duty I failed due to low dps was the last one in the Stormblood patches and I mained Scholar up until Endwalker. Even then I managed it eventually, it just took a couple of attempts.

I will have words for that duty when Sanguinia gets there.

Eh. I'm willing to learn, but I really don't think FFXIV really cares much to teach me. The game either doesn't do a good job of explaining what you should do or straight up lies to you sometimes. Not that it's unique to FFXIV in the MMO space, it's one of those genres that just expects you to read guides, but considering the differences compared to WoW or whatever I do think FFXIV is probably worse than normal.

Hellioning

Yeah, the fact that the Skulls exist as an individual group that is allowed to use Ala Mhigan armor and the like is Gaius trying to be nice. He's saying 'see look if you work with us everyone wins, you get to keep your culture and work with your countrymen while working up the ranks of our military and becoming a citizen'.

Except, whoops, as it turns out most Garleans are still racist as hell and won't accept them, to say absolutely nothing of what the Skulls actually do.

Hellioning
Jun 27, 2008

Hah, I had forgotten about the inconsistencies there.

Yeah, this is one of the parts where Stormblood falls flat for me. I kind of understand the desire to not want to do the same expansion twice (I know I give WoW enough flack for giving us two expansions where a controversial figure is made Warchief, starts using bad stuff in order to gain power, gets people to rebel against them, cracks down on dissidents hard, and then is overthrown by the Horde and also the Alliance is there I guess) but it still means that Doma and especially Ala Mhigo are underbaked as regions as compared to everywhere else so far.

It's more like he won enough money on the bloodsands to buy the arena and then used that money to get on the Syndicate. No way anyone who actually works for a living gets that rich, even Godbrand owns a casino.

But, wasn't Godbert already rich when the opened the Gold Saucer? I thought he very explicitly became rich purely through supernatural Goldsmithery (and in the ARR Hildy questline, it's also explicitly pointed out that his seat on the Syndicate is still very new)

I mean, yes, you don't open casinos by not being rich.

But there's 'rich' and then there's 'one of the 6 richest people in a city-state whose culture is primarily based on capitalism'.

Oh absolutely, Kugane is fine when it's a pretty place to shop or have a house in but it's kind of a disaster when it comes to story, both main story and job quests.

And with how many job/class quests and side quests are in Kugane it is very clear that they care a lot about Kugane which makes it's complete uselessness to the MSQ all the more baffling.

Yeah, I'm not much of a fan of this questline. Not that I was expecting much revolution or that to happen in a class quest, but it is disappointing that it basically goes 'yeah it sure sucks that these random peasants got murdered for the temerity of asking for help. Oh well someone has to be the cops I guess'.

Like I'm not even asking for Makoto to join Ugetsu or anything, I just don't understand why no one decides to go vigilante like Musosai did.

Like I normally despise that quote attributed to Mark Twain about how there are two reigns of terrors but come on if any situation is worth that quote it's this one.
