RIP to my Childhood GOAT You gave this man some gas and blasting caps and he'd give you art. Those 1970s Godzilla films, along with Return of Godzilla are such a central part of my childhood (in part because they're fun as hell and US distro at the top making them a very common VHS release that was easy to get at even Sam Goody's (yes I'm old). Hell even had the WTC art of Megalon and Godzilla fighting on top for my 6th Birthday. Now I get/got to see my son (and when she was younger) daughter love Godzilla. It rules. I can actually explain the reason HBO has so many. It's due to some existing distribution deal with Criterion (it's also on there), and Criterion licensed the entire Showa series (1954-1975) and put it out on BR, but they also had TV/Streaming rights. Somewhere a Brazil and Filipino Khyber gunsmith is looking at that picture and having a tear in their eye, like the Italian dude playing the Native American in the littering commercial. Abe was good for bilateral relations and in general while doing some things that were very dumb and counterproductive like with the Republic of Korea*, while generally ignoring things like the Imperial Household (because if they wanna play Japanese crusader Kings with their monarch that’s fine with me), otherwise I can’t complain too much. I’m also totally aligned with the idea of revamping article 9 completely. It wasn’t born so much out of a bad concept, by the kind of idealist US lawyers who drafted the postwar Japanese Constitution, it clearly was both productive in curbing enthusiasm for war, but was way too stringent. I mean Germany was constrained in certain actions, but otherwise has and continues to have a regular military. So dropping the S is fine with me. *Which is bad and pointless and only helps the PRC, which benefits neither Japan or the ROK in the long run.

The cool part was they resisted the urge to "adult content it up" which shows just how good the original model was. A brilliant thing is just how no one picks up on anything (until the very end) and constantly thinks their talikng about non sex related things. Also "eat rear end"

Actually he generally had good relations and was extremely supportive of US policy and the security alliance and alignment on many other matter. Look I’m not defending his family or his garbage dump relations with the ROK, but in generally Abe was pretty good, at least from points of foreign policy and some other areas such as trade, China, DPRK, and to an extent Russia. W may not have liked him, but that’s probably because Kozumi and W really hit it off and had an excellent relationships. Interestingly enough the people of Taiwan are actually taking it really hard, messages from all the major political parties across the spectrum, the people at large. Abe and Japanese PMs have been extremely Pro-Taiwan.

A.o.D. posted:I swing between "yeah it makes sense for them militarily and for US strategically for them to have a military" and "Japan building an aircraft carrier should be casus belli for every nation on the Pacific Rim" depending on how much they demonstrate that they've not moved on from WWII style nationalism. I tend to think more the former generally, the fact that the LDP (as whole or in policy) has no desire to dump the security treaty indicates, to me fwiw, that they value US support and wouldn't do anything to truly jepordize it. I do agree it depends on their future behavior, but I also think with Russia and China, there is a way to build common ground with Japan and Korea, with Moon gone* it will be interesting to see if Japan realizes they have far more common ground with the new conservative government. * Moon was quite poo poo for constantly letting the North play him for support/sunshine policy era style, suspending military exercise with the US, enabling and supporting that stupid Singapore meeting as some sort of potential breakthrough and some sort of accomplishment with getting two sociopaths to sit down with each other. I should state this is only me talking about in the foreign policy area. Edit: ^haha I love that totally not a helicopter carrier or something that could be modified or newer version that allows for VTOL F35s to takeoff, it's just your standard destroyer. A.o.D. posted:There are a lot of ways of assisting with a military effort that are of utmost importance that have nothing to do with handling bullets and launching warships. Japan is well positioned to provide meaningful assistance in most of those capacities. They don't have to violate their laws to be a critical partner in the defense of Taiwan. I’m not sure how Japanese military deployment outside the home islands work unless it’s a UN peace keeping force or non combatant role (I want to say Iraq), but I’m not even sure on what support they can give. That said supporting with military equipment may be easier after donations to Ukraine. I do think if Japan had long range attack capabilities or even regional attack capabilities, it helps to reinforce deterrence and gives a credible threat, that Japan can respond on its own and without resorting to the US nuclear umbrella. We just need to get the ROK and Japan back on the same page, birdshit islands are dumb, Chinese artificial islands, not so much. It’s part of the reason the Japanese are developing their own marine force, plus Russia and the occupied islands is a way to channel all the nationalism into something other than stupid dick waving contest with the ROK, which I’ll admit are mostly aggravated by Japan.
