Hmmm. Those Braves teams had 5* Hall of Fame players in their prime. Not sure I agree with this take

Should I be excited about the Rangers hiring Bochy? Managers don’t actually matter that much, right?

Boch was a players' manager, well-liked by most of the guys who played for him. He protects his players, and if he has to bench a guy or something, he does it privately, not in the media. He sometimes plays struggling veterans over kids with more potential, like when Brandon Belt couldn't get in the lineup his first couple years.

The Giants were an old-school org when Bochy managed them. One of the last teams to buy into the moneyball stuff. It will be interesting to see if the game has passed him by. He liked stable bullpen roles (Affeldt in the 7th, Romo in the 8th, Casilla in the 9th, or w/e) and making out the same lineup card every day. It's a little hard to see him using an opener, or piggybacking SPs, or doing the midgame platoon switch stuff, and I'm not sure he knows what Statcast or spin rate is.

Also, he has a large head. Seriously, you would not believe the melon on this guy.

Sometimes, you try to trade for a player, but other teams offer prospects that the trading team likes better, and so you don't get that player

Aaron Judge's contract will be a horrible albatross before the ink dries, and I hope the Giants sign him anyway.

The Giants declined Evan Longoria's option. End of an era, probably. Dude had a good run in the Bay. Played rock solid defense even when he was slumping. But he is 37 and can't stay on the field, and Marco Luciano is coming and will probably have to move off shortstop. Giants youth movement starts now, hopefully.

Didn't realize until now that the Mariners get a draft pick for calling up J-Rod on Opening Day. Kind of cool.

MLBTR posted:

While Rodríguez is surely thrilled to secure Rookie of the Year honors on its own merits, the selection has a tangible effect on the team as well. The new collective bargaining agreement contained measures designed to counteract service time manipulation through the so-called “prospect promotion incentive.” Top-two Rookie of the Year finishers who were Top 100 prospects on at least two preseason lists at Baseball America, ESPN and MLB Pipeline are automatically credited with a full service year. That’s a moot point for Rodríguez, who’d have qualified for a full service year after tallying 172-plus days on the MLB roster regardless. He also signed a massive contract extension midseason that overwrites his path to arbitration and free agency.

The second portion of the PPI does come into effect, though. A team that promotes a player for a full service year who meets the aforementioned prospect criteria and entered the year with less than 60 days of MLB service who subsequently finishes top two in ROY balloting (or top three in Cy Young or MVP voting during their pre-arbitration seasons) earns a bonus draft pick after the first round. Seattle carried Rodríguez on the roster all year, so they’ll collect an extra pick in the 2023 draft in recognition of his achievements.

Rutschman and Kwan check in as runners-up after very strong years in their own right. Baltimore’s catcher hit .254/.362/.445 with 13 home runs in 470 plate appearances. His second-place finish earns him a full year of service time as well.

The Pussy Boss

I wonder if Verlander would take an incentive-based contract? Say 3 years/$120M, but the 3rd year is an option that only becomes guaranteed if he pitches 120 innings in '23 and '24 and doesn't have elbow surgery? That would give his new team some insurance against signing a 40 year old coming off TJS.

Carlos Rodon had a higher Fangraphs WAR than Justin Verlander and Sandy Alcantara. Just a random fact I found interesting.

Love the prospects posts. Post more please.

Luis Matos, who is a top-5 in the Giants system, won Defensive Player of the Year in the AFL. Scouts love his hit tool but KLaw wasn't impressed:

quote:

I was looking forward to seeing more of Giants outfielder Luis Matos, who had a very rough year in High A at age 20, hitting .211/.275/.344 for Eugene, although in the end, I think I saw what he was all year. Matos is a hell of a center fielder, with speed and good jumps, but he’s so undersized that he isn’t able to do much at the plate right now, drawing some walks while I saw him but otherwise striking out or making weak contact.

He could still be playing CF in San Francisco by next fall, or more realistically 2024.

It's crazy that Renfroe is on his fifth team in five years. He's pretty good. Is he a jerk?

A corner outfielder who can hit 30 dingers, but doesn't get on base a ton or play great defense, is pretty replaceable. Useful to have around, but teams don't love paying those guys when they hit arb. Eddie Rosario, Adam Duvall, guys like that. They tend to get non-tendered and bounce around.

When I think of Justin Verlander, I think of those starts in Detroit where he would sit 90-95, then in like the 7th inning he'd dial it up to 99 to get out of a jam, and then he'd pitch the 8th and 9th too because gently caress you, that's why
