Shooting percentage and iffy goaltending seem like reasons to me to be skeptical they can maintain the current pace, but the 5 on 5 numbers look pretty good and it would be surprising if they lost more than they won going forward wouldn't it?

Jhet posted:

You could probably get away with just quoting the last time you did it. They haven't really changed their zonal play or breakouts at all. It's just super loose most of the time and there really isn't competition in the Pacific at all. They're finishing better than last year, but the o-zone is still reliant on breaking fast and hoping the D can't get set up. Cycle game is still pretty middling a lot of the time, but a little better than last year. They still have trouble with teams who play a good structured game though, and that's Hakstol hockey going back to NoDak.

The Seattle Kraken HAVE THEY TURNED A CORNER OR ARE THEY idk the same but not.

Starting with really simple obvious things - Last year the Kraken shot 8.9% and had .880sv% in all situations. League average was 9.8% and .902. At 5v5 they finished at a 7.5% clip and received .908 goaltending. Both under performance's relative to league averages with (as has been outlined previously) their 'goaltending' being worst or near worst in the league. Hockey Ref lists the Seattle Kraken as a -36 of actual outcomes vs expected outcomes while Nat Stat puts them at -26. Additionally, both powerplay and penalty kill clocked in about 6% lower than league average. Other sort of random things I'm going to note (because if I write them here it's easier to compare them) - 44% actual goals for while 48% expected. Scoring chances a dead heat at about 25 per 60 for/against with high dangers ending at 9.75 for and 10.3 against per 60. Despite this 48.5% split the Kraken ended the year with only 41% High Danger goals for because of 4th worst in the league shooting% on high dangers and 3rd worst sv% on high danger.

That brings us to today. Here. Now. All hail the Hakstol blah blah the Kraken are flying. 2nd in their conference nipping at the heels of the resurgent Vegas Knights, a +17 goal differential, a 5th best in the league total points, and 3rd best in the league points %. So have they turned a corner. Are they for real. Was Hakstol unfairly maligned and we had to suffer all those Rex :words: ban him! Sort of, ish, and no Dave Hakstol go back to college!

Starting with simple stuff. Turns out when you take a team that was shooting 8.9% and 7.5% 5v5 AND THEN they shoot 13.1% in all situations and 10% at 5v5 they get a huge jump in goal production. Earth shattering...I know. Both are over-performances on league average of 3 and 2% respectively. In addition to that, the Kraken's goaltending has also improved from .880 to .889 (lol), but from .908 to .920 at 5v5. Currently the Kraken are a +7 actual vs expected per Hockey Ref's numbers and +14 per Nat Stat's numbers. Along with those improvements the powerplay has also jumped from ghastly to near top of the league (6th currently). The PK still sucks at 4th in the league. That is a big hang up. In terms of xG the Kraken are 'fine' with a 52.33% expected outcomes. This is more todo with their shot volume than their chance creation though. Seattle is a coin flip chance team. This is slightly an improvement (from last years 48.6 to 49.66% this year) and the rate of chances are 28 per 60 for and against. The high danger department shows another slight improvement with a very slightly edge in Seattle's favor and relative to last season we see the opposite happening....50% high danger chances for and 60% high danger goals for. High Danger shooting % has rocketed to 22% (2nd best in league) and goaltending has improved to a respectable mid-table. Currently Seattle sits top of the NHL at 5v5 shooting% and are comfortably average in 5v5 goaltending.

What to expect - well I would expect regression towards the mean. Morgan Geekie, Matthew Berniers, and Jared McCann will not be shooting 23 to 26% all year. Jamie Oleksiak will go from shooting 36% closer to his career average of 6%. Even contributing players like Sprong and Schwartz are shooting 4 to 6% ahead of their career averages. There will be a lot of coming down to earth here. Yes the Kraken have decent enough underlyings. They are aren't scoring 60% of the goal 5v5 good though (that's New Jersey and New Jersey only. Boston will probably end up 57% actual and 55% expected as they seem to do year in year out). When the regression comes and how the team handles it will dictate how things end. If you're rolling and feeling good that will only inspire more confidence. When they hit a bump though...how they respond will say a lot about this team. Either way I think they're making the playoffs because their conference is the worst in the NHL and the Kraken already have a 9 point gap on WC2. Seriously though the entire western conference is horrific. Enjoy it now.

I think this is a dumb take from Rob. The ratio of high danger chances vs scoring chances only matters if the number of total scoring chances stays constant. That said some quick adding and division to make averages - The Rangers went from creating 32.46 chances/60 in their first 15 games to 31.15 in their next 10. The drop off is significantly worse for High Dangers going from 13.66 to 11.4. Of course this type of analysis isn't really worth much if there was also an improvement on the defensive suppression side, but I don't have time for that right now.

e: I guess the Crosby was ruled goal on the ice, and the Bastian one wasn't. But they're still both in the crease and the goalie initiates contact (although the Bastian one is a little more 50/50 about that). Bastian is also deeper in the crease.

Bastion makes contact with Murray prior to the shot being taken and contact is made in the crease and it impedes Murray's ability to play his position. Sid is well outside the crease and doesn't make any contact with the goaltender until after he's sprawled out completely to make the save. Edit: also that Sid is attempting to shoot/redirect the puck and this motion is what leads to him having contact with the goalie.

To me it comes down to impeding the goaltender from playing his position and Sid wasn't adjudged to do so where as Bastion (definitely imo) was.

I'm not an Oilers fan by any stretch of the imagination but Connor is the best player in the sport by a pretty big margin, and adding qualifiers to make it seem like he's not is silly. Saying stuff like "he's only 15th in scoring if you don't count all these other points he scored" seems kinda dumb to me. If it was so easy, why isn't every other star player scoring at his level? Robertson is the only non-Oiler coming close and it's required him playing at an insanely unsustainable level for anyone that isn't Connor McDavid.

Like I brought up before in the off-season about Conor vs Austin you can be the most ridiculous offensive player on the planet (like Conor is) but if you also give back just as many your team isn't going to go far.

In all situations Conor and Leon lead the league for total on ice goals for (amongst forward). They also clock in with 64 and 61% goal split. However, compared to other 'elite' players that's near the bottom of what you want to see. Pasta or Berge are 75%. Matthews and MacKinnon are 72ish%.

I would think, to anyone, when your super star 'best player' in the league isn't actually that dominant during the periods that the vast majority of the game is played at. That might be problematic and maybe he isn't actually 'the best player' because being the best player might include things like 'not getting scored on' and 'playing defense'.

Bastion was clearly in the crease, clearly bumped the goalie, and clearly impeded Murray from playing his position. Them's the rules. If you wanted to argue that without the contact by Sid that the puck doesn't go into the net (which I agree with) than by all means, but it seems quite a stretch to say Crosby 'impeded' the goalie from playing his position. On the flip side, if that were called a 'no goal' on the ice I could see a coin flip for if it were overturned or not.

The funny part is they do seem to be trying to win games, they're just stupid bad at defense and shot stopping. It's incredible just how bad they've gone. It's Arizona Coyotes bad.

At 5v5 - Columbus, San Jose, Los Angeles, Montreal, Buffalo, and Vancouver all sport worse sv% than Anaheim and Arizona ascending from .893 to .907. Then you hit the Yotes before Calgary and then Anaheim. In all situations you have: Los Angeles, Vancouver, San Jose, Seattle, St. Louis, Buffalo, and Columbus before reaching Anaheim. Range starts at .877 ending at .889 (Anaheim). Yotes land 14th worst at .897.

Point being don't insult Arizona's bottom mid-table goaltending like that. Now the rest of that whole....on ice thing.....yikes it's bad yes. For both Arizona and Anaheim. Bottom of the league bad in fact. It appears there are 2 distinct groups of 'very bad' this year with Anaheim/Arizona and Chicago all posting 40% xG splits...then a clump of Philadelphia, Vancouver, Columbus, Detroit, and Montreal next all hovering around 45% xG.

Personally I think that Gibson is better than his numbers from the past few years. That team is godawful and he gets shelled every night, he's routinely having to see 40-50 pucks a game. So yea, he's at a sub .900 SV% right now, but on the other hand he has more saves than any other goalie in the NHL. Look at this last 7 starts, for example. In two of those game he got destroyed. Like, sub .800 SV%. In the other five his worst sv% was .918, and the Ducks only won two of those games. On most teams, that kind of goaltending gets you a win. Of course you can't pin all of it on the team, but I don't really buy that it's all on him either.

No team (5v5) gives up more xG per 60 than the Ducks @3.36 and that's mostly on the back of giving up more high dangers per 60 than any other team @ 16.08. Arizona is next closest in high dangers giving up 14.17 per 60. At present Anaheim ranks 7th best in the NHL with .855 high danger sv%.

Basically the goaltending is being asked to do the impossible. Also Stars fans might have been 100% correct about Klingberg who looks very very very bad.

The Ducks were vaguely in the playoff picture last year, and then just decided to blow it up for some reason and the team has been dogshit since. Maybe it's worth it if they win the Bedard lottery, but if not, in not sure what plan B is.

Uh what? Anaheim wasn't anywhere near the playoffs last year. They weren't even close to competitive in the worst division last year.

The Pens have not played the Rangers, Isles, or Devils yet. I think they've played the Caps once and the Canes once. The Pens are playing all three of those teams this month though.

Ducks, Avs, Wings, Panthers, Devil's, Press, Isles, Rangers, Sens, and Sharks.

For those interested hockey-ref has a full head to head list under your team.

Ovie had that dip when everyone figured out he'd want to go outside towards the left wall and then do the toe drag and release into shinpads. Trotz, I think, should be credited with reworking their offense to get better looks and spacing for Ovie off the rush/zone entrances.
