It was just a really unimpressive performance and most onlookers agreed he'd lost, when the judges handed him the decision it was met with a lot of grumbles - that would be enough to take a little shine off the big PPV debut, but him boasting during the interview and strutting around on a hugely unearned ego trip took it from a contentious win to a public embarrassment

Sort of like when Rose went "I'M THE loving BEST" in her rematch with Carla which she very clearly lost a boring lovely fight.

Yeah, like, Paddy Pimblett is a dumb rear end in a top hat, but he's made the conscious choice to be a dumb rear end in a top hat. He's long since committed wholesale to the Conor-lite thing, it's not like he can dial it back now. He's going to ride it without ever deviating right up until the moment someone completely breaks his poo poo, and I can only hope that it is Ilia Topuria.

I just want an entertaining fighter who also does good food/cooking related stuff.

Paddy could've easily been the Man vs Food MMA variant. At least we have Cookin' with Volk.

At first I thought Paddy had a bit of a point under all the shittiness. I mean calling Ariel dog whistle anti-semitic names is super lovely, and he's done similar things often enough that he shouldn't get the benefit of the doubt, but asking for appearance fees isn't unreasonable. Ariel is getting paid for these podcasts so why shouldn't the fighters get compensated for their time? They get paid little enough as it is and you can't pay rent in exposure.

Then I saw today that DJ said when Paddy asked him to appear on Paddy's podcast there was never any offer of pay. So Paddy is a hypocrite as well as a race baiting turd.

Iirc, part of this came out that Paddy was being paid by Howler Head or someone's stuff to do appearances and it's somehow linked to being owned by Dana White. Basically was something related to Dana either way but not in a "this is to gently caress with Ariel" kind of way.

If y’all got links, link em. I appreciate advancing the narrative but i just wanna see the sources.

The Howler Head thing I heard on Jack Slacks post 282 podcast and it was the first time the Dana White connection to Howler Head ever crossed my path.

Edit - this is about HH doing NASCAR sponsorship and Dana is listed as the co-founder

Just so happens to be a sponsor for the UFC and has used Paddy in the past for promotion/marketing.

Tape Delay Kickboxing

Ancient Japanese TV contracts and corresponding ABEMA streaming rules make it almost impossible to follow premier kickboxing organizations K-1 and RISE outside of Japan. Fortunately, they do tend to upload the fights for free on Youtube 7-10 days after they happen in Japan.

This series shall, where possible, allow you to watch the shows in order as if you were watching live, without spoilers. So if you stay away from kickboxing news (not hard) and wait for these posts a week later, it can be just as thrilling as being there.

Beyond Kickboxing event calendar: https://beyondkick.com/schedule

Volume 1
K-1 WORLD GP 2022 in Osaka - 2022-12-03

The final major K-1 show of the year features the first-ever eight-man one-night bantamweight Grand Prix, which in K-1 is at 117 pounds, with the winner being crowned the K-1 Bantamweight champion. The tournament was full of entertaining fights, and I have also highlighted the most exciting of the 18 non-tournament fights in bold. The numbers next to each fight are the weights, in pounds.

K-1 Basics: Most fights are 3 3-minute rounds with a single 3-minute extra round if it’s a draw. 3 knockdowns in a round is a TKO, or 2 if it’s a tournament fight. Judges are fairly liberal with 10-10 round scoring, so you will often see fights scored 30-30 or 30-29. Kickboxing rules: knees are legal, elbows are not. Clinch must be broken with an immediate strike or the ref will separate.

I went back to do some curiously obsessive numbercrunching now that the breakdowns for 2022 are finally over, and I wanted to share and also say a thing before I descend fully into an irony coma for the remainder of the year.

First off: If you read the totality of every single thread, including the stuff that was recycled month to month, a) are you okay, and b) you consumed 152,010 words.

Second: In a year with 42 UFC cards (not counting TUF or Road to UFC), I wound up writing 43 breakdowns, because gently caress you, Khamzat, that's why.

And finally: In the first twelve months of carl's fight breakdowns my ongoing existential Chase Sherman crisis managed to outstrip Moby-Dick, as we wound up with a wordcount of 224,302.

That's a lot more than I thought I would wind up doing. At the start of the year my only real intention was to keep CommonShore's magic going, and I dunno that I would have experimented more, and I DEFINITELY know that I wouldn't have opened a substack and started posting poo poo on twitter, were it not for everyone's support and occasional supportive prodding. I make $8 from the substack and by god, it's my favorite eight dollars in every given month.

So thank you, for the reading, for the community, and for the support. Thank you boco and lobmob for your own consistently excellent writeups, and thank you mekchu, marching powder, and everyone else who's shared randomly inspired things over the year.

Thank you for doing all of those writeups and taking over the thread OPs when I got burnt out last year and had lost all real interest in doing that sort of stuff anymore. I really do think your writeups are the best (sans some of the more gimmicky monthly ones a few people did ages ago).

The origin of that thread is actually from the grappling thread where Gordon Ryan and his lovely views were generating more posts than the actual grappling. It's like, yeah, I see why it's relevant and I'll read about it, but can we go back to improving our hug based martial arts now please if not I'll just unbookmark

This. The grappling thread was mostly for technique discussion purposes. It became an all encompassing thread for combat sports mostly for the same reason. There's no intent to hide away someone's views but those sort of topics easily derail threads etc and nobody sane really cared or had an issue when the thread was created. It's meant to be a place for mocking and laughing at idiot fighters posting about non-fight related poo poo on social media is all.
