Also curious about that invisible lady strip. I'm remembering that strip we had in here about that ancient Egyptian lady who died and came back to life in modern times or whatever. It always seemed like it was just about to get rad, but never did. Don't know why that's coming to mind.

God, I loving loved Deathless Deer. What was that description, inane drama interrupted by the domestic squabbles of birds?

It really was terrible and weird, but in just the right way to make it fascinating.

Remember how, due to one of many drastic retoolings of the comic's basic concept, the last we saw of once-important characters the professor and his assistant was them sitting in jail because the police thought they were drunk?

I'm not sure whose side we're supposed to be on in this Luann storyline. On one hand, yeah, it's a little weird having Bernice and Luann's mum bonding over porn, but on the other hand Luann certainly seems to be being portrayed as an incredible prude that doesn't quite feel like we're supposed to agree with her. But this is Luann, so who knows.

I prefer it to Intelligent Life, but a) that's because it kinda reminds me of some of the dumb little comics in gaming magazines and 2) that's some real damning faint praise. If I got shot, as I was being loaded into an ambulance I'd say "well, at least I'm not reading Intelligent Life."

One time, an ex of mine and I had an idea to do our normal "hang out, fool around a little" at the park thing that teens do, during a snowy winter, and I can assure you that burning love does not help keep one warm.

I also put off getting new shoes far too long and mine had some gaping holes in them. I trudged through the snow in those. Love didn't have anything to do with that, just teenage stupidity.

We trained an AI on over twenty years of geek culture webcomics, then asked it to create a comic of its own. Here's what it came up with.

In 2014, the machines declared war.

Seriously, I thought it was only a few years old but look at the date on that article! July 7th, 2014! I could have sworn it was more recent, it's only been posted for a couple years, right? Anyways, let's take a look at that article:

quote:

For his crew of four main characters, Reddick pulls from himself and those around him growing up in Indianapolis as a sci-fi and comic-book fan surrounded by those who adore Hoosier basketball, Colts football and the Indianapolis 500.

Skip's the kind of guy who knows all the dialogue from episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation, and he's the polar opposite of his co-worker Barry, the top salesman at Finch Marketing and a super-jock who's ready to drop and do 200 pushups whenever the mood strikes.

Skip's colleague — and crush — Gwen is a well-balanced, strong-willed individual, though her one weakness is cat memes on the Internet. And Mike is Skip's best pal who's excessively vocal about his geekdom for all things video games, comics and galaxies far, far away.

"Skip's a mix between Mike, the extreme, and Gwen, a more balanced voice of reason. That said, Gwen has her own nerdy geeky things that come out," Reddick says. "Barry's actually a lot like Mike. Barry will absolutely take his shirt off, paint his body the color of his favorite team, and go to work that way wearing a beer hat.

"Each character is a different level of fanaticism in some kind of way that I can exercise and play with."

If it was a 1980s movie, Barry would probably come off as the villainous bully, but in a modern culture where The Big Bang Theory and other properties have put geeks at the top of the entertainment food chain, he's a refreshing and sporty balance to the various geekery.

Imagine Sheldon Cooper as buff Peyton Manning super fan, and there's a little bit of what Reddick is trying to capture.

"Barry does not get Skip, he doesn't understand him, yet he's exactly like Skip in his own way. And Skip doesn't get Barry either. There's a foil thing there but they both kinda dig each other in a way," Reddick says.

"Will Skip ever end up going to a baseball game with Barry? Who knows, you'll have to read the comic. Will Barry ever end up going to a comic convention? I doubt it but it'd be funny if he did."

For the first year or so of Intelligent Life, Reddick wants to develop his characters through stand-alone strips, but down the line wants to have bigger story lines such as Mike having a flight of fancy being on a sci-fi show or taking the whole crew to San Diego Comic-Con.

Reddick wants readers to get to know his nerds and maybe even see themselves in the strip.

"It's like a convention," he says. "You're in a place full of like-minded people, you belong, you see a whole bunch of other kindred spirits. I want IntelligentLife to feel that way."

I like Sally Forth, but Grandma is genuinely one of the worst people in comics. I cannot think of a time where she has been positive, ever. She's never anything but insulting and rude to every single character and has been for ages, well before this story arc began. Like, I get how Sally being conflict averse is annoying, but also I am not shocked that she is, having been raised by this woman. Grandma will actively pick fights and then act aggrieved and 'how dare you?' when she gets any sort of pushback, and I find it hard to believe that that's anything new; growing up with that constantly is gonna gently caress you up in some way and frankly Sally's occasional dive into fantasy when dealing with her makes a whole lot of sense.

Also, I just want to say, look at that last batch of Intelligent Life. How the gently caress is that Reptilicus-SFX level poo poo acceptable. I really do hate it more than Legend of Bill, and Legend of Bill deserves everything everyone says about it.

Trip report (in case anyone actually needs it): postimage isn't that bad, but the main issue for what we do here is that with a freeloader account (anon or otherwise), anything hotlinked pic bigger than 1280x gets downscaled. That isn't horrible for strips, but it'll do a number displaying Sunday pages. The original will be full-sized, but you'll have to click through (Thimble Theater's the example here).

Unfortunately postimg doesn't like me, I don't see them. It's been a thing with modern Arlo and Janis too, but since so few people use it I've just been living with it.
