Keying in on ROR at the deadline seemed so odd to me. If ever there was an opportunity to move a bunch of assets for a defender like Chychrun that was it. Really any defenceman who could provide long term stability on the back end. Hell, even the Hronek trade would've made a lot of sense for them (and he cost nearly the same as ROR). I will never understand Dubas' fascination with moving picks for one and done aging assets.

They traded for like five defencemen.

Playoff hockey is fun to watch :)

There is another important dimension to this. Wright's (initial) junior team, the Kingston Frontenacs, is spectacularly inept. They're inept at everything, but specifically at developing players. For one example, the team has been around several decades now and not only have they somehow never made the OHL finals (I think they've only made the semifinals once), they had basically no successful-in-the-NHL prospects until Jason Robertson. Everyone from their system, no matter how highly or lowly ranked, underwhelmed. For another, Wright himself, who was granted exceptional status and had an age 15 season in the same ballpark as McDavid and Tavares, ended up a downwardly-mobile 4th pick in the weakest draft in a decade.

Wright did eventually go back to the CHL but only after the Kraken had convinced the Fronts to trade him.

Yeah I loving loved the Oilers losing the game twice inside 10 minutes last night.

I don't know if that's dumber than if they didn't or not but it's dumb.

There’s two kinds of rules in the nhl, fair play rules and safety rules. I’ve always thought of high sticking as a safety rule, so it makes sense that intent doesn’t matter.

That sounds familiar, but even if we bracket the "allowed to change" bit it was still thought to be a thing that defenceman were putting the puck out of play intentionally (with plausible deniability) when they couldn't otherwise get the puck out.

Criminal that the Leafs got away with winning a game where they were somewhere between bad and disastrous for >60 minutes of game time. But I like crime so Go Leafs.

Here's Dubas getting into it with Bolts fans after the Rielly hit on Point. Apparently the fight between Matthews and Stamkos was in fact called a fight, which made it the first fight between 60 goal scorers in NHL history.

Rob Gherson did a nice analysis comparing Samsonov's play between game 3 and game 5. The short version is that after he gives up a bad goal to Eyssimont he started overreacting to everything which meant he was never properly in position and consequently slid all over the place like a lunatic. Which is more or less in line with what we've been talking about. Gherson illustrates it well.

It bounced off of someone in front of the net and if you listen to the end of the clip the NHL did initially have it down as Rielly's goal.
