Nice crossover!

I want to check out campaign videos, but they're always so long. 30 minutes is my limit. 40 minutes I might stretch to. An hour is too much. Anything beyond is an automatic "No". Reading something that's several hours long is fine, but watching something for that long makes me antsy.

Showdown at High Noon 4-14

The final Land-Air ‘Mech crumpled into a barely-recognizable heap. Smoke poured from the shattered wreckage, but the fires died quickly enough in Frigid’s extreme cold. Syntyche brought her BattleMaster to a slow stop. “Alright, time to pack it in. Grandpa, take the others and secure the perimeter while the marines do their work. Ravager, I want you up the boarding ramp—your Thunderbolt’s a lot more imposing than a Falcon, and I’d rather make sure the turncoat doesn’t have second thoughts.” she ordered. “I need to call mother duck.”

“Understood,” Theo radioed; followed shortly by Ravager’s “Aye.”

“Obligation-4 to Dimetrodon,” She switched to the command frequency. Their communications would all be monitored by the Dimetrodon regardless, but Commander Ryoji wasn’t the type to distract a combat team unless some new, immediately pertinent information came in—like a second DropShip landing in the A.O.

“Mission successful. Enemy Union-class is tentatively secured, all ‘Mech forces downed. Waiting on the boarding teams. The locals put in good work, which means we need to decide how to settle the bill. What are the odds of talking Commander Shearer off of the Bichon Frisé?”

“… Slim.” Came the slightly delayed response. “Why?”

“That’s what I expected,” Syntyche took a deep breath. “We owe the locals a DropShip for their help. They’d like to make a run for JàrnFòlk space on the next trader, and Dimetrodon will make that more—”

“I’m not giving up my ship, Lieutenant.” Syntyche winced. Commander Ryoji sounded furious.

“The Key Largo only has three docking rings,” Syntyche had been preparing for this argument for weeks. “And we need to get this ship back to Epsilon Pegasus. As captain of the prize crew, they’ll almost certainly let you retain command once Intelligence has had a chance to pick the computers apart—which means a brevet promotion to full Captain at a minimum for you and prize bonuses for the entire Dimetrodon crew.”

She pressed a little harder, “We need the Goddess Orinoco’s reaction mass to make it back safely; and the survey teams aren’t going to want to give up the comparative luxury of the Bichon Frisé for a Confederate. It’s a loss—but we’d be losing something no matter what.”

“… Understood, Lieutenant.” The commander’s reply was a long time coming. She still sounded furious, but she’d relented. The captains would likely talk things out amongst themselves—in truth, turning over the Buccaneer-class Bichon Frisé would be preferable to losing a combat vessel, both for the SLDF and for the locals who’d net a larger, easier to fly ship out of the bargain—but having two command crews aboard unfamiliar ships could create complications.

“We’ll review our options and get back to you.”

After-Action Report:
LAMs aren’t that bad, I might do it again. We’ll see.

The players got pretty beaten up, but by an amount that feels about perfect given how quickly that could’ve gone south with an enhanced Stalker in play. Since most of what are considered to be ‘royal’ technologies have proliferated by this era, we’re probably going to encounter more of them from now on just to make it clearer that the mechs available in 3025 are usually some sort of downgrade. To that end, I do intend to sneak in a few Light Fusion Engines here and there. It just makes logical sense that the light engine would be developed before the extralight, even if the schematics didn’t make it into the Helm core.

An excellent job done by all the players in this one. Of all the mechs to lose control of in the lead-up to the final capture push, the Dragon was absolutely the safest since it was pretty well incapable of one-turn killing an APC by itself. I was a bit worried when the first SnowCat went down, because the local infantry weren’t adding much to Troop Strength; but the players did a great job controlling and pressuring the defenders and keeping them from focusing their attention on the transports. And punishing them for doing so when they did anyway. :haw:

It was incidental. I had replacement mechs planned for downed player units, with a little bit of randomness baked into it. The Sentinel was about 50% likely to turn into a Rifleman but could've been replaced by a JagerMech or a Hunchback, the Blackjack was going to become an Ost or a Guillotine, the Hoplite had a pretty good chance of turning into an Orion or an Archer, and the Mongoose was almost guaranteed to get replaced with an Assassin.

But there were some definite downgrades in the mech replacement tables, and everyone had a slim chance to pick up a Charger.

I will never field something I don't think the players should have in a campaign. Whether or not they get to keep everything when they return to Epsilon Pegasus is up in the air, but Syntyche has plans and there is going to be cause to keep her in a Command 'Mech after this.

The return to Epsilon Pegasus will give you a chance to vote on whether to keep a unit or risk a roll on a RAT; so it'd be a good chance to replace the Hoplite.

I wanted to ask if the clint's head was still in salvage storage, actually - a while ago you said 'if you had a good idea for a refit, bring it up', and I don't think it ever got used for anything.

I feel like I asked this before but have already forgotten the answer: given the current point in the timeline, how much Cool poo poo is on this battlefield? The LAMs and the K1pult and the Stalker all seem VERY good in their own ways. Like, the Locust LAMs might be complete deathtraps, but the Stinger and Phawk LAMs seem great.

Let's maybe even put aside the idea that we're talking about upgrading/sidegrading one of our Dropships and just...the mechs! Wow!

Soiled Meat
LAMs aren't particularly uncommon (except insofar as they're a long-running boondoggle). Anyone fielding royal-tier equipment is concerning. The great houses do have much greater access to that technology than the 3025 core book suggests, with House Kurita (at least) being in full production of er large lasers, medium pulse lasers, and double heat sinks (per the PHX-1Kk Phoenix Hawk). The PHX-1Kk is half the reason I decided I really should be upgrading some machines to higher-spec equipment, because the Stalker's weird LRM loadout makes a lot more sense if it's actually been downgraded over time.

About the only SLDF royal technology that I believe is still entirely unique to the SLDF is the gauss rifle; which is probably at least partly why the SLDF never fixed the whole 'explodes when damaged' problem.

What would a production era gauss rifle look like, you think?

Less weight? Custom ammo? Less volatlity or built in case? early access to ap gauss, magshots, or like, the protomech ac/8 reflavored as a gauss weapon?

I'd agree tho. The silver bullet feels like a staple-on/post production kluedge.

Transform and waaauuuugh out!
The Clans idealize the Star League to such a degree that I suspect that they left in the exploding issue out of a desire not to deviate too far from Kerensky-Kun-Sempai's vision. You notice that almost all their tech is just Star League Tech ++, or stuff that the Star League would have eventually developed had they not imploded and instead developed certain concepts to their logical conclusions, such as the Omnimechs just being the Mercury's modular design taken to its extreme.

About the only tech that was straight up and up a divergence from their Star League origins was their breeding program, which instead was the result of Kerensky The Lesser's fever dream.

Fort Morro - Outpost Castle
Epsilon Pegasus - Columbus Base
Spinward Periphery
November 5th, 2763

“And that’s my report,” Syntyche folded her hands, straightening the edges of her presentation report, but otherwise stood at attention.

“Thank you, Lieutenant” General Vasylenko said amicably. Standing in front of senior staff was always intimidating; but Generals did run in the family. For better or worse, she’d gotten used to performing under pressure. Identifying whether an officer was feigning neutrality because they were pleased or angry had become second nature.

Fortunately, General Vasylenko wasn’t hiding his approval. The old man clasped his hands together in a half-clap. “Commander Ryoji’s report corroborates your own—and I must say: you both showed exceptional judgement. The Commander is already aware of this, but it’s my intention to promote you both: effective immediately.”

The General thrust a hand forward, which Syntyche shook. She then saluted as he smiled. “Congratulations, Captain Moon. It just so happens we need a new company commander.”

“To go after the Draconis Combine?” Syntyche asked.

“Just so,” the General still seemed amused even as a carefully crafted mask of neutrality settled over his wizened features. “What I’m about to say doesn’t leave this room.”

“Understood, sir.”

“The Star League has been in talks with several of the more developed colonies in the Spinward Periphery. We were encouraging trade and communication in the hopes that they would come together to form a new periphery state.”

“In the hopes that a new nation—even a bandit kingdom—would put additional pressure on the Draconis Combine in the same way the Rim Worlders and Taurians have put pressure on the Lyran Commonwealth and Federated Suns respectively?”

“Just so,” the General confirmed. “Most of the periphery colonies have cause to dislike House Kurita. With implicit Star League support—and I have little doubt the Davions would swiftly back a new state as well—House Kurita would have to contend with a new hostile border. We’d even have settled for a bandit kingdom.”

“But,” Syntyche considered, “House Kurita seems to have caught on.”

“And they’re trying to throw a wooden shoe in the gears. We’ve sent recall orders to the dispersed expedition forces, but it will be some time before the regiment musters and assembles. You aren’t the first unit to return, but yours was the first to return with results—and grand results at that! An intact DropShip taken directly from the attackers.” The General clapped his hands again.

“It won’t take our teams long to extract every bit of data from that ship’s computer core. After which: well, we now have a Union DropShip and a fresh company commander who can do some good with it. Normally, I’d assign you to an existing formation or move you up within your current command structure; but with the current dispersal of your regiment we have an opportunity. So, Lieutenant, I’d like you to consider what sort of force you’d prefer to lead, take stock of the equipment you’ve brought back and whether or not any of it’s usable, and decide what objective you’d like to pursue. Put a proposal together and have it on my desk by the end of the week and I will strongly consider your recommendations.”

The General turned away, gazing out of his office window and into the outpost castle’s small but still cavernous Mechbay. “You’ve shown good judgement and initiative thus far and I’m inclined to let you off the leash a bit and see what you come up with. Just don’t get too greedy, Captain. I’ll likely deny your proposal if you ask for a Corvette.”

“Understood, sir. I’ll try to avoid requesting a Black Lion and accidentally transferring to the navy.”

The General laughed. “Dismissed, Captain. And congratulations.”

PTN the infocards don't reflect my CPT Moon's promotion.

Prop 1: B+D
I'm voting B because infantry enables us to do crazy poo poo like steal DropShips. My one reservation is that more local flavor seems like it'd mean more ArchBansheeBattleHammers, but they're going to be around anyway, so voting D because I think we should still primarily be an SLDF force.

Prop 2:
I have no idea. I think there was some talk in the Scintilla thread about how running a scout lance in a Battletech campaign might actually make sense? That might be relevant.

Prop 3: C
Logistics strikes like A and B make sense for winning a war. Being sensible in Battletech get you killed. Vote for glory. Vote C. Because once we're fighting the Coordinator of the Draconis Combine there's a chance an office chair will show up.
