i never saw house before and typically i don't like horror movies. this movie is not what i expected and i love it for that so so much. i absolutely love how out there, weird, and just kooky all the supernatural hijinx stuff was. the head in the bucket, the kung fu girl flying around fighting random stuff flying across the room, etc. it was so good in all the right ways.

what a fantastic movie to recommend. thanks for suggesting it.

I looked at the Wikipedia page cuz sometimes there's interesting tidbits on production stuff and found this section so wild, intriguing, and so believable given the movie's outcome lol

quote:

Obayashi found the acting of the seven girls to be poor while trying to direct them verbally. He began playing the film's soundtrack on set, which changed the way the girls were acting in the film as they got into the spirit of the music.

...

For the scene in which Ai Matsubara's character vanishes under the blood, Obayashi had her suspended nude, pouring buckets of blue paint on her to create a blue-screen chroma key effect where the blue colored parts of her body would deteriorate on camera. The outcome of a lot of these effects would be unknown until the film was completed.

the wrong guy.

man this movie is such a dave foley style of comedy a la kids in the hall/newsradio and it rules because its played so straight. the jokes all land really well and i love the premise of a guy thinking he is being hunted down as a murderer but its only because he's an idiot, but it coincidentally tracks him along the same path/direction as the killer who then decides to get rid of him.

i think the best gag was the guy who was selected as ceo for marrying the 'favorite daughter' convinced that dave foley was still in the office despite not being in any of the meetings/scenes he thinks he was there for.

also when he calls his fiance/wife and goes "honey its me....dave foley.....your fiance" was such a simple line but so funny

edit - actually the

"i asked for a swiss passport"

"oh...they...they uh...didn't have any"

gag was also 10/10

what a good movie and its wild i never heard of it because its such a strong comedy with some good names.

i remember when this first came out i instantly decided i wouldn't watch it so this was my first time watching it.

i kinda like what they were going for with the general look and feel but some bits just felt really weird. the vivid colors were also really good and helped stylize the movie but a lot of the effects/transitions for the action sequences did not age well. the main actors are all pretty good (emil hirsch & matt shepard in particular) so there's that.

i'm not even sure how i'd score this movie, i'm at such a loss for how to interpret most of it lol.

I don't think I can really comment much about the film since I'm just...I have no idea what else to say that hasn't been said. I had zero prior knowledge of The Who going into this other than "they were a band and I think I know one or two of their songs." But man this film kicked rear end from start to finish. The story was not awful for the sort of film this was, and the spectacle of it all was just...yeah very much a thing I can dig and enjoy.

Thanks for recommending it because it was great.

Just finished secret of nimh. Been a long time since I've seen this and was pretty surprised by the quick pacing. Loved the character designs and a lot of the performances felt really natural. Kinda strange that the magic stone that Jonathan leaves her has zero explanation whatsoever lol. It's got such a mysterious and charming atmosphere throughout the whole movie, and all the art is so cool. It makes me want to read the book just to check out how different it is.

pretty much same. i love that when i was a kid i thought there was some genuinely creepy/spooky stuff and on this rewatch it still held up as creepy/spooky in its design. the animation work is so drat good.

i've read the book more recently (like 5 years ago) and its still pretty good. very different than the movie though, which i think may be more based on the 2nd book in the series so there's stuff that sorta is assumed you knew the books? not sure.

i wonder if the magic was meant to be a form of telekenesis that the older rats would have developed as a side effect of the experiments at NIMH

Don Bluth: Wow! Glad that the film inspired your curiousity.

With regard to the amulet, it is a metaphor for believing in one's self. Remember the quote, "Courage of the heart is very rare, the stone has a power when it's there." It helps symbolize her courage and the power of the stone to help rescue her children...a miracle, if you will. God stuff. Granted, it isn't in the original novel, but we felt that it was much more powerful. Nicodemus says it was Jonathan's, but really just to get her to accept it. We didn't really think it was necessary to explain it further. Seems like we would eat up too much screen time to tell the history of the amulet, when the story was about an innocent widow mouse, who, thru her journey would find out that she has the courage to rescue her own family.

Regarding magic, we really believe that animation calls for some magic, to give it a special "fantastic" quality. The stone or amulet is just a method of letting the audience know that Mrs. Brisby has found 'Courage of the Heart'. Magic? Maybe. Spiritual? Yes.

Rocky - love this movie a lot. it kind of rules how a relatively speaking nobody actor wrote and starred in this film and then it was so well received for the time he went on to be a major star off of this one film. can't really think of any contemporary actors who've done that themselves off hand (i'm sure there are but i'm drawing a blank here)
