Getting better tests is good, but it’s at least as useful to test early and often.

STAT: There’s never a good time to drink raw milk. But now’s a really bad time as bird flu infects cows O.K., but, like, have you considered that getting infected is how we build a powerful wall of immunity in the population? quote:“If I were in charge, for the moment I would forbid the selling of raw milk,” said Thijs Kuiken, a pathologist in the department of viroscience at Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, who has done research on H5N1 and the damage it inflicts for about two decades. See, we need some nuance, and an offramp for these LOCKDOWNS.

I've been out of the country for a few months. Back in America my son used to drink a glass of organic milk each day, and most days the only animal product I would eat are eggs. I haven't been keeping up with this thread. Are these products safe to consume?

Are these products safe to consume? If you cook the eggs well, probably. The milk is pasteurized before it’s sold to you, and that ought to take care of influenza (and in the limited tests done on HPAI H5N1 specifically, apparently actually does). Organic milk usually has a slight leg up in this regard because the organic bottling lines were set up later and serve larger areas, so they tend to use the ultra high temperature process (UHT) which has a higher factor of safety. The problem at large isn’t that you will get sick from the food you eat, but that someone, somewhere will, and maybe it’s something with human‐to‐human transmissibility.

maybe! maybe not! FDA says according to their testing, viral particles might be in pasteurized milk but that they are non-viable virus shrapnel left over from the pasteurization process. it might be true but this thread isn’t ready to trust anything the govt says considering how they outright lied about COVID I would cook the eggs thoroughly and only buy ultra-pasteurized milk for now
|
# ? Apr 30, 2024 07:30 |

Yeah, odds of sickness through cooked or ultra-pasteurized product should be effectively zilch, you should be fine there. It's just gonna really suck for any poor bastards who actually manage to catch bird flu through something as stupid as a rare steak or egg protein routine or raw milk. Just, like, practice good food safety, I guess, generally a good idea anyways. I dunno if that's even the most likely route for possible human to human transmission starting up, it's just kinda sad we're gonna roll as many dice as possible on yet more people dying and becoming disabled.

I think they did egg inoculation testing on the PCR-positive milk and confirmed no actual live virus. https://www.fda.gov/food/alerts-advisories-safety-information/updates-highly-pathogenic-avian-influenza-hpai So I think mainly it depends on if you trust that all milk is being properly pasteurized, I suppose. But really the commercial dairy supply is probably not much of a risk at all. Much more likely it just spreads to people over and over from cattle operations and eventually starts spreading human-to-human. Or from the endless cow scraps -> chicken feed -> chicken litter -> cow feed cycle.

I was thinking that maybe Walmart could consider it a loss leader to get shoppers in the front door, but Walmart's core business model is moving into rural areas and destroying all their competitors so they don't actually need loss leaders. People have nowhere else to shop already.
