sweating profusely about whose credentials win between the historian and the doctors discussed this tangentially related good article about the history of diy trans healthcare

quote:

The story of DIY transition offers a more complex alternative to the zero-sum game in which today’s highly imperfect version of trans institutional medicine will either be banned or remain technically available but effectively inaccessible to most people. DIY asks us to consider whether institutional medicine is even a viable reference for trans people, or if the truth might be the reverse: trans medicine as we know it today should be judged in its efficacy and ethics against DIY. The latter has left a more meaningful imprint on trans people’s lives over the past century. The women of color who made the journey to Tijuana, many of whom were teenagers when they first arrived in San Francisco seeking a home, would not have benefited from the pediatric gender clinics that exist today; they would have been turned away at the door. Despite that, they were far from helpless, and they didn’t need rescuing. Their vision for unconditional care might be strong enough to ensure that the looming spread of criminalization, suffering, and violence does not define our collective future.

One goon always lies to the doctor, one always tells the truth. What question does the doctor ask to find out if they should really prescribe pax?

If the thread is gassed its because the thread has been targeted for years and people desperately scrutinize every post to see what can cause big stupid drama conflagrations and what can draw people who might be shocked and appalled by the issue of the moment to make it louder.

I think people do need to be extremely careful of paxlovid since the contraindications are serious and handing it out to friends and family is stupid but I don't care if people work with doctors to get stuff ready before getting infected.

They are not equivalent. This thread is very confusing.

It's been smokey as poo poo in Seattle and my lungs are, I assume permanently at this point, still super loving sensitive to it thanks to covid. It has gotten better out and all I want to do tonight is hang out with lesbians and share cookies I baked. Since I’m back again, I’m gonna share a nice little moment from last week. My apartment gave notice about required upgrades on my ac unit that would take all day. I was worried about having people in my apartment and getting a contractor to wear a mask. I taped a sign asking them to and some auras and kf94s.

Dude came, put on one of the auras properly before knocking and it ended up being no issue at all.

We need to bring the thread in Something Awful culture by also making this a thread to post really boring video game opinions.

I’m currently playing Remember Me solely because I’d played the first chapter of it when it was new and never touched it again. It so far is a perfect time capsule of 2013 politics where the evil corporation that controls everything and the rebels are presented as equally bad.

Next I want to play Last of Us 2 which is more plague relevant.

I've also been buying a ton of DS games lately to play all of the stuff that I never got to when it was new. Had a bit of a frown behind my mask when the nice but obviously sick employee kept wiping her nose with her hand getting something out of the case and running my payment.

I used an alcohol wipe on the game when I got home.

I got two of the Trauma Center games, which I think will make me basically a doctor when I'm done so everything I say in the thread about health will become unchallengeable fact.

I remembered the old "dead virus in the nose" bit when I was thinking about the person who was sick on Monday and how the host has tried her best to get people to test beforehand. I wanted to make sure I remembered the quote and found this that's still up on Blue Shield CA's site and was updated in November of last year.

quote:

Situation: You feel fine but need a negative test for school, work, or a social gathering.
Your best test: An at-home rapid test

Unless your school, work, or hosts require a PCR test, a rapid test is your best bet. A home test will give you results in a matter of minutes. A PCR test can take days. A positive rapid test result is very reliable and means you currently have an infection. (Also keep in mind that a negative result doesn’t rule out an infection, according to the CDC.)

Taking a PCR test in this situation might actually make things more confusing. “The PCR is so sensitive that it can pick up a few dead viral particles in your nose,” says Monica Gandhi, MD. She’s an infectious disease specialist at the University of California, San Francisco.

Listen, a PCR might say you're sick and that would be a huge buzzkill so use a rapid.

Do you really believe that saying mods or trolls are setting out to aggressively punish and shame immunocompromised people is a fair description of what's happening lately?

To put things very openly and directly, I think that the mods and admins have continually failed to handle things until it gets into deep frustration and escalation that builds over years.

In my brief period as IK, I had queued longer probes on dongicus, who was openly trolling the thread, calling us r-slurs, going on complete breakdowns about how we don't get enough pussy and was told that it would just escalate things to probe people beyond what the rules said. This led to me quitting when it just built up into this absurd thing with posting Mega Tard over and over and WAIST getting an avatar mocking the death of his uncle and feeling like me and Trixie were just getting tons of heat without any support.

I feel like posting a screenshot of a report and giving it 30 days or giving trashy owl a week for getting frustrated and making a couple dumb posts completely runs against the whole "disproportionate" poo poo vylekin gave me and that people in this thread keep being told we are obligated to be on our best behavior when people can go around making up whatever dumbass lore about the thread and individuals that they want in the fractal drama threads.

I bring up the immunocompromised point because while I do think some of these posts are bad, I think given that our whole society is throwing people under the bus to die, understanding that actual people are writing these posts and showing a little loving grace to their lives would be better instead of insulting LC entries and way longer punishments than the posts can actually call for.

Just my take but I think it would be fine if mods here decided to take a slightly less light touch on posts that exaggerate or straight up lie about goon lore to make the thread look bad or cast general aspersions at the thread without quoting particular posts.

On the other hand I agree with vyelkin I assume that generalized trolling should be punishable but at a sort of flat rate that lets you keep the thread clean without stupid gbs crap like ramps for dumb jokes.

And finally while I understand and respect that immunocompromised and people from all walks of life post in this thread, I think it kinda sucks to frame things that thread regulars dislike or probes for bad posts as particularly setting out to target the immunocompromised. That's not what anyone is setting out to do here, even the meanest trolls, I don't think.

I do have personal frustration that when I was giving 6ers to dongicus, accepting vyelkin's point about not overdoing it and not doing any chaining resulted in an extremely stupid breakdowns, constant complaining about me and a pathetic SAD thread calling me out by name as some villain when I'd already given up. Even in my "meltdown" I probed 1 person who ended up being a permabanned rereg, 1 really lovely post from a "thread regular" and a handful of people I thought were being particularly assholes in the handful of posts I looked at while writing up an explanation for why I was taking a break.
