Finally caught up. Wasn't sure about the switch to a chuunin exam-style arc but I liked it in the end, especailly the third test. The Übel scene was particularly good because it was like, "yeah I know you're imagining cutting me in half right now, what else is there to say".

I think it is fantastic that Frieren is now associated with the Costco hot dog, and I hope that eventually it goes both ways.

Since the final episode came out, I finished watching the dub and it's one of the best dubs I've heard around and I strongly suggest you try it if you wanna give the show a rewatch. The only thing that that I could even complain about is that Denken's voice was higher than the sub and that threw me but you get used to it pretty quick. the MVP though is definitely Jordan Dash Cruz as Stark though. https://twitter.com/ctlovesanime/status/1718036493628031235 TwoPair fucked around with this message at 05:12 on Apr 7, 2024 |

I just marathoned this in three nights - my daughter mentioned to me since I’ve been out of the loop with anime for a while even though I used to be really into it. It was so drat good and I’m so sad it’s over. It’s right up there with all the obvious “best anime” choices and might even be the best, personally, because it seems to target people past a certain age who have seen loved ones come and go, and felt like they could have done more for those people. It’s a great theme. Even if that weren’t the case, the story is great, the pacing is great (I don’t know if anything that is all action based would hold my interest these days and the combination of slice of life, fantasy and action was perfect, the music is great and goddamn the animation was good. My main dilemma now is if I read ahead into the manga. I started reading it tonight and intend to read up to where the anime ended (haven’t read a manga in longer than I hadn’t seen an anime start to finish), but I loved going into the anime blind; I didn’t even know what it was about before watching really. If/when there is a season 2 I’m sure I would enjoy experiencing it like that, but I don’t know if I’m patient enough to wait years for the second season. But I hear the “best arc” would be in season 2. I’m just really glad to have experienced something so good, but I wish there were more of it. Better than too much of something and watching it fall off but I got so attached to the show.

Welcome to the dilemma of all anime-only fans for the series. I started with the manga so I'm past it, but I have the same issue with "The Apothcary Diaries." At least that one is coming back next year so i can try to hold off.

I can't think of a more perfect final episode other than like, cowboy bebop or something. I will stay strong and not read the manga.

Pretty much all dubbing work is recorded solo. It's rare to have roundtable audio recording sessions for anime due to scheduling and studio locations.

I don't mind Eisen's dub voice but I can't hear Chris Guerrero in any dub without hearing his Dragon Ball Abridged Dr. Gero or Cooler voices.

Oh poo poo I really liked the dub too and thought Frieren’s VA sounded great. In the first episode, especially after not having watched anime for a while expecting something totally different and more cliche sounding, I was like wtf is this adult mom flat delivery voice coming out of this small elf. But it didn’t take long to warm up to it, and by the end I couldn’t imagine a better casting choice. I thought the sound and delivery really suited the character. Everyone did a great job, really (Stark was certainly a standout but I really liked Fern’s voice too). My only concern is however many years it takes to get to season 2, can they get the same VAs back again. I hope so. I do really wish VAs could interact with one another during recording in some way, but I doubt that will happen any time soon.

rio posted:I do really wish VAs could interact with one another during recording in some way, but I doubt that will happen any time soon. As I understand it that really only happens in Japan (and sometimes in America for like, The Simpsons or some Disney productions) mainly because there's time for animation teams to go back and make small tweaks if, like, Luffy's VA can't realistically finish a sentence before the character's off-screen. But for anime dubs, stuff is pretty much set in stone. They basically can't bother trying to all record together because everyone has to do multiple takes to hit the lip flaps of the character they're voicing. Also because voice acting's a clinically underpaid gig so everybody has to go do lines for any other shows/games/etc they're doing and/or go to their other jobs to keep bread on the table.

Concentrating recording studios in New York, California and Texas also limits opportunities to get multiple VAs in the same room at the same time. The pandemic saw a lot more remote recording from home studios which does increase the variety of voice actors but it doesn't fix the scheduling difficulties.

I'm not looking for manga spoilers, but one thing I'm curious to see is whether Stark gets better at judging his strength relative to his opponents or if he keeps inadvertently drawing out his fights because he assumes they're way stronger than he is only to one-shot them almost by accident.

He can tank mad Fern blows so he's basically invincible. Still funny how wizards have to do exams but Stark gets taught by learned masters completely unprompted while hanging around town.

My takeaway from the anime is that the North is in a state of being permafucked and the Mage association is generally of the mind "sucks to be you, hope youve got a 1st Class Mage escort" if you weren't lucky enough to be south of the border when the demons got organized.

It is hilarious (and kinda badass) that according to Wirbel's story in the alst episode, apparently the demons really started acting up after Himmel died. Like even as a short old man most of them were like "dude just stick to the woods and eat animals or something, that dude who killed the Demon King could still be out there!"
