I was kind of under the impression that the Athletic was always structured the way it was, pay top dollar to attract top tier sports journalism talent and make yourself an elite name in sports coverage as a loss leader, with the intention to get bought by some bigger entity and then parachute the gently caress outta there the instant the ink was dry.
