I wish death or severe misfortune on people who drive recklessly, especially if I've got my kids in the car with me. Like, at the time at least, I have a genuine desire that the person that nearly killed me and my family gets in a terrible car accident which harms them and only them. So, I guess I thirst for vengeance, but in such a way that it's self inflicted by the guilty party. Is that OK?

Sounds like a lovely situation all round, but unfortunately yeah the best thing to do is probably just to accept the facts and the balance of probabilities, and move on, rather than tying yourself up in knots over it (which you don't seem to be doing tbf).

There's a guy I know who got hosed out of his inheritance by a romance scammer (young guy moved in with his elderly mum, got her to change her will, then cashed in when the inevitable happened), and although he did eventually get some more money via the courts, the toll that the legal battle took on his physical and mental health was appalling.

Our cordless vacuum is meant to be one of the best ones which doesn't cost like £500 and honestly it's a pain in the arse. It's obviously easier to lug around, but I find I spend more time declogging it than I do actually vacuuming, and then it's not even particularly effective anyway. It does make rooms look vacuumed, but you have to just go around manually picking up all the slightly larger than dust-mote-sized things it's missed.

Private Eye even at its best is a hugely depressing read. The first half is just dozens of stories of corruption and greed within every echelon of the British establishment, and then the second half is poo poo satire and extremely catty book reviews.

I still think that if you could get the alt right conspiracy nuts just to sit down and read a few copies of that rather than just slurping up the latest YouTube fash de jeur, it could do a lot of good for channelling their incoherent anger at the world in the right direction.

e: happy Christmas goons, I hope you have a pleasant and/or chill day.

We got good things off to a good start with my mum's partner drinking too much, and THEN pouring himself a quadruple whisky and baring his soul to us about how much he worries about his son, and how much he regrets not being a better dad (and then falling over, twice). It was sad but also quite nice at the same time as he's a lovely bloke and we all rallied round to cheer him up.

What about these storms eh? Our bedroom is in the loft, and right now it sounds like a giant is just periodically punching the side of our house. And then there's nothing like waking at 3am to the giant punching your house AND also putting your house through a giant car wash at the same time.

As depressing as it is, I really think dental insurance is a pretty worthwhile purchase these days. Of course, not everyone can afford it (especially those who might not need it the most), but you can get coverage for like £10-20 per month, and a lot of plans include 2x annual check ups and hygienist visits in that as well.

It presents a fairly substantial moral quandary, because health insurers are the devil, but on the other hand the state isn't loving paying for it, so this feels like the least worst option if it's within your means.

Now, which is my place against the wall?

You'd have to look at policy docs I guess. I mean, if you already know you need a full set of fillings then you can't just pay your first £10 monthly premium and get them all done for free, but I guess if you get insured, go for a check up and THEN find out you need a full set of fillings then you're in luck. I don't know enough about how the industry works to understand how easy it would or wouldn't be to commit fraud (plz don't commit fraud).

Just to provide an alternative anecdote, a few months ago i got into a taxi, and small talk commenced with the cabbie sighing and saying 'I'm just getting depressed at the state of this country...' - at which point I braced myself for a fascist diatribe - but then turned out to be a lovely left wing, tory hating, corbyn supporting bloke. This whole row over Sunak's poo poo joke is just so dumb, and so horrible. Neither Starmer, Sunak or their wider parties, or the media, give a solitary gently caress about it, it's just pure performativism all the way down, just pure nihilism with no aim other than to 'win' according to the values of a totally nebulously defined public opinion and support.

Meanwhile, the victims family sit in the middle of it all, asked to comment on it and being paraded around by an establishment who see them as nothing but temporarily useful props in their endless, contemptible posturing.

It's like something out of The Thick of It, but too depressing and inane even for satire.

The recent phenomenon of people clutching their pearls over spoilers is infinitely more pathetic than people wanting trigger warnings tbh. Oh boo-loving-boo, you saw a trailer that gave away that your favourite Marvel character visits his home planet at some point the movie and now the whole thing is RUINED! Genuine emotional harm has been done!

Tbh if the only thing that matters about a piece of media is the plot being a surprise when you go in, it's totally disposable anyway, so who gives a poo poo?
